Are Goku's fingers broken or just messy drawing?
I can't find the picture right now but here's where you'll find him:
On the Cell arc after being beaten by one of the Cell Juniors he's laying on the floor trying to get up and then his fingers are shown broken/messy art.
Logically if they were broken then they wouldn't be normal afterwards? I'd just like this to be cleared up.
Thanks.

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: Are Goku's fingers broken or just messy drawing?
I'd assume it's just messy art since Goku is able to shortly after wave goodbye and do the teleportation forehead two finger thingy.

I can't find any picture that match what you're saying but I'm guessing it's this sequence?

When Goku tells everyone "I'm.....sorry....I didn't....think it'll....go...this....way....."

I think it's this scene :

It's strange...episode 184 is just a masterpiece, from beginning to the end.THE END. \\(*____*)// !!
Huumm
, but, yes, it's probably messy drawing, and nothing else.

That what I was talking about. Yea his hand was drawn awkwardly. But can you blame them. Quite an awkward position if you ask me. Perhaps Goku just fell wrong and he did break his fingers
. I mean he did get a senzu bean to fix it anyways
Re: Are Goku's fingers broken or just messy drawing?
If you want weird fingers from Goku, check out the manga panel when he's surprised to see that Bulma has come to check out the cyborgs (telling her "Are you dumb? Why'd you come here?") and sort of points his finger towards her: his other fingers are very... unusually big and wide.

It looks like Frieza's second form foots.

I wonder why some people really appreciate Masunaga's work. Characters' bodies are sometimes awkward and his art style looks nothing like Toriyama's. Even Uchiyama seems to have tried to imitate it more than him. The good things about his episodes that people always point out are what Masunaga himself was not involved with such as fluid key animation and Gohan's SSJ2 transformation scene done by Miyahara.
Re: Are Goku's fingers broken or just messy drawing?
Yeah, the fight scenes were done by Iwane Masa'aki, who now does awesome solo key animation episodes for Pocket Monster. Nevertheless, I really like Masunaga's episodes. He kept the episodes looking unique and rough, there's some really interesting cuts. I really feel the passion on Studio Cockpit episodes and I think that's the most important thing, something that sets it apart from Uchiyama's work.kei17 wrote:I wonder why some people really appreciate Masunaga's work. Maybe they were broken. You do remember he ate a Senzu in between fighting the Cell Juniors and sacrificing himself, don't you?dprez wrote:I'd assume it's just messy art since Goku is able to shortly after wave goodbye and do the teleportation forehead two finger thingy.

I think that it looks like they drew him a (messy) right hand in place of his left.

Re: Are Goku's fingers broken or just messy drawing?
When the "camera" lingers for a while on a shot, Cockpit's style can look strange, especially with the expressions. However, I don't think I've enjoyed any studio's fight scenes more consistently than Cockpit's; in particular, their introductory episode (179, the third Goku vs. Cell episode) bursts forward with energy and exciting choreography and direction, and is part of the reason that Goku vs. Cell is one of my favorite fights in the franchise (the other episodes do well too in fight direction, but in my opinion, it peaks in episode 179). SSJ2 Goku vs. Kid Buu, despite being filler, is another episode where we really get to see DBZ take an artistic style that lets it do something different, but exciting.kei17 wrote:I wonder why some people really appreciate Masunaga's work. Although Masunaga's direction can be odd for non-action heavy episodes (especially notable in the Saiyaman/25th Budokai episodes), there's still moments where characters have really intense, distinctive expressions that I love, like here:

So while it's different from Toriyama's usual style, I don't think something different is necessarily bad. I think Cockpit was a great change in variety after the large amount of episodes in the Android/Cell arc that, simply speaking, looked awful.

Actually, they started before that in 174.Storm wrote:their introductory episode (179, the third Goku vs. Cell episode)
Still, I've always loved their work, from the intense expressions to the well choreographed and animated action. Sometimes the drawings are a bit rough and very stylized, but I prefer the heavily stylized work over Uchiyama's flat, lifeless animation and shiny eyes from the Cell arc onward.
Here are a couple of GIFs I made from Studio Cockpit's Goku vs. Cell work:

Re: Are Goku's fingers broken or just messy drawing?
Oh yeeeeeeeeeah. That episode does highlight one awkwardness of Cockpit's work; when characters have concentrated faces, their expressions contort and sweat beads on them in this really unnatural, unseemly way. I guess in a sense it shows that living in an action cartoon ain't always gonna pretty, though.Metalwario64 wrote:Actually, they started before that in 174.

I literally have hundreds of GIFs I've made this year alone. Soon I may make a thread and post them all. Just got sick of all the crappy Dragon Ball GIFs I've been seeing lately that look like they took a few frames from random Youtube videos I suppose.

Oh man, I hope you do. I'd love to get some good gifs to start uploading to Sakugabooru. Have you thought about making some from these episodes?Metalwario64 wrote:No problemo, go right ahead!JulieYBM wrote:Awesome work Metalwario64. May I upload those gifs to Sakugabooru?![]()

Actually, you could probably do 'em yourself if you like. If you don't know the key animator's name go ahead and just tag it unknown artist. If you're up to it, that is.

Actually, I do have a couple.

Unfortunately, most of my gifs are just sorta simple loops. I don't have many very elaborate gifs like most I see on that site.
I'll definitely look into that site when I get around to doing it though.
