Did Toriyama get lazy and/or bored?

Post by MysticVegeta » Fri Jan 17, 2014 4:44 pm

Did Akira Toriyama get lazy and/or bored with the series?

Personally, I think he did.

Power Levels (Battle Power), Super Saiyan, and Time skips are really lazy to me.

With Dragon Ball, he did a real good job at making me feel how powerful people were meant to be. With Z, it was like "Here's some numbers. Whoever has the higher number is stronger. D.I.Y"

Super Saiyan was good the first time around, but it just became a power boost for pretty much every Saiyan and Saiyan Hybrid.

Super Saiyan was meant to be legendary, mythical, god-like, amazing. The user was the most powerful fighter to ever live, but then they decided to hand it out to kids, and make other SSJ power-ups easy to attain. I facepalmed when Goten and Trunks went SSJ. Training, hardwork and anger were thrown out the window.

I shouldn't have to explain why time skips are lazy, just an excuse for characters to appear a lot stronger in one episode then they were in the previous one.

Discuss!

He was always lazy. I don't think that's a big secret :P

I kind of agree with you on the super saiyan thing, it seemed the more saiyans that got it the more non-saiyans that were pushed to the way-side. Exept for Tien, always saving the day with that tri-beam of his.

Shinhan was the most relevant of the irrelevant.

I thought the time skip between Cell and Buu was warranted, who would want an arc with Gohan as the lead? And a depressed Vegeta? No Trunks or Goten, would be a very very boring arc indeed!

Tbf the non-saiyans only became irrelevant in the Buu saga save for Big Green (can never spell his name properly  ) and it's understandable, they're not from a warrior race whom age slowly and have the thrill for fighting.

I'd love the Boo arc to start a few days or weeks after the events of Bojack, to give you a rough idea.

A depressed Vegeta is an interesting concept, Teen Gohan is much better than Adult Gohan IMO, and Goten and Trunks were as annoying as shit.

Kind of a shame though, there was a lot of wasted potential with Android 18 heck 17 was still alive during the Buu saga, kind of strange they ignored him until the end.

Not really, he'll probably be like he was in movie 8 put not as scared more like "I don't give a shit, I'm outta here".
Disagree, I much prefer Adult Gohan, I mean at least he had a personality with all that saiyaman stuff, Teen Gohan was just too boring for my liking!
Also, disagree, I love Trunks and Goten they played off each other really well and bought comic relief which was sorely missed imo from previous arcs!

I think Toriyama is really a gag manga artist at heart and the Buu saga was a refreshing change from the more serious Cell arc. I actually wish Toriyama became even wackier and made some of the other characters more useful. Why not go ahead with a Goku-Dende fusion? That would be funny!
Kami is my co-pilot.

On the other hand, who'd be able to keep up the crazy schedule he was under for ten years?

I know what you mean, but somehow I think the English portrayals attribute to Teen Gohan being a bore as opposed to the character himself.

While I don't necessarily disagree, I don't really agree either.

The point of the power levels to begin was to "don't rely on them, they don't always determine the victor in a battle." basically, Don't rely on the scouters.

In terms of the Super Saiyan transformation I feel like as long the initial transformation had some meaning it's good in my book. Goku's, and Future Trunks' firat time are great. Vegeta's and Gohan's are fine, but Goten's and Kid Trunks' could've been a lot better. If Goten didn't have Super Saiyan when he did, I would've liked for him to go SSJ when Super Buu killed his mom. (possibly SSJ2 if he already had SSJ1 like in the real series.) Kid Trunks could be when Fat Buu was beating the crap out of Vegeta, but that seems a little too repetitive...but didn't Toriyama make SSJ to begin with because he was tired of coloring in Goku's hair every panel of the manga? Could be wrong, just heard that somewhere awhile ago.

For the timeskips, I like them. I just wish they would show more of the gaps in between. Like the 7 years before Buu, or 10 years between Buu and the End of Z. For example Gohan and Videl's wedding, Pan and Bra, the little things. Maybe like a few minute flashback/recap of stuff that went on. (Say what you want about GT, but I liked that scene with Goku and little Pan at the beach. It adds to the so many unknown years of the DB universe.
