How did Akira Toriyama come up with Super Saiyan 3?

I'm curious. is there any interviews in which Akira Toriyama talks about how he came up with the design for Super Saiyan 3? It's such a cool design, probably my second favourite design in Dragonball (Bested only by Piccolo's design).

I'm not sure about extensive interviews on the subject, but here's his rough designs (taken from the old Daizenshuu site):



Kanzenshuu's 'Transformation Guide' section is still under work, but I'm sure there'll be a bit more meat-on-the-bones regarding Super Saiyan 3.

Incidentally, Toriyama actually confused the form with 'Super Saiyan 2' when contributing to the writing of Battle of Gods.

Well, that's kind of the thing. There's no sense of parody or self-awareness with Super Saiyan 4. It's going for a more powerful, primal look; it hints at being the purest form of the Saiyans and is closer to their ape roots.

The question it presents, however, is "Is that interesting? At all?"

That is awesome! That's the way I am with a lot things people are complaining about plot-wise in the series. If I can come up with an explanation, I'm good. If it follows the first thing that comes to my mind, then it's not that interesting.
