Origin of Uranai Baba's Song?

Post by DerekPadula » Fri Jan 31, 2014 7:32 pm

Does anyone know the origin of Uranai Baba's song that she sings during Yamucha's fight with Suke-san, The Invisible Man?

It appears in Chapter 100 and episode 71. Here are the lyrics.

English: “I, I, I am Uranai Baba! Cute, cute, Uranai Baba! What would you like to know? Do you have a small but sentimental request?”

Japanese: ♪ Wa, wa, watashi wa Uranai Baba! Kyūtona, kyūtona, Uranai Baba! Shiritai koto wa nani kashira ~ choppiri senchina tazune-goto~

わっ わっ わたしは占いババ! キュートなキュートな占いババ! しりたいことはなにかしら~ ちょっぴりセンチなたずねごと~

The episode in Japanese, so you can hear the rhythm, past the 3:30 mark: http://kissanime.com/Anime/Dragon-Ball/ ... 1?id=17413

I suspect that like most of the elements in Dragon Ball, Toriyama borrowed this from somewhere else or used another source as inspiration. This would also explain why Uranai Baba refers to herself with the "watashi" pronoun instead of her otherwise constant "washi," for old men.

Unfortunately I spent most of today scouring the web and trying to find a source for the melody or these lyrics somewhere, but could not. I figure it's either a pop song from one of Toriyama's favorites, or a classic ballad or lullaby.

Any ideas?

The Turtle Sage sings songs like this too. I would like to know about them as well, if anyone with The Knowledge cares to chime in? :p

Ah, good point. I can't remember when that happens. Do you know of an example? The songs may be from the same genre or related somehow, since Baba and Kame-sennin are related.

He does it a couple times at least. I'll have to check. I can't quite remember when they occur...
