Re: DBZ Theme
I feel like the martial arts theme has likewise become a bit worn-out. They should switch the theme from martial arts to flower-arranging. A dark, grim and gritty flower-arranging series.

No.
Toriyama himself has now personally stepped in at least once to prevent Dragon Ball from becoming too "dark."

Dont you think the light-hearted theme is dried out? DBZ needs something fresh.

Re: DBZ Theme
Dragon Ball (yes, even Z) always had a certain humorous tone. That IS Dragon Ball. Even the most "RAHR THIS IS MAXIMUM POWER EXPLOSION TIME!!!" moments in the series have their light moments. Movie 8, for example, has that fantastic scene with Goku in a suit. Even the big action scene gets a nice little bit of comic relief when drunk Roshi shows up.Vegeta12 wrote:Dont you think the light-hearted theme is dried out? DBZ needs something fresh.

Re: DBZ Theme
I feel it could be a bit more serious and darker than it has been as of recent. Perhaps going back to what we had in previous arcs. Though if we tread back into the Cell Arc style of writing (without the humor), then we've gone a bit too far. Buu level would be ideal for me; serious threats so that you don't feel too much of a lack of drama, but enough comedy that you never feel like you're stuck in a hopeless soap opera.
Re: DBZ Theme
Nah, there are too many dark anime around today, keep Z in the light.

Personally, I'm all for a special that's full on bonkers, as in Gotenks vs Super Buu meets Toon World (from Yugioh), but that's just me. Let's delve deeper into Gohan's mind after eating the apple in Dead Zone.

I wonder what Garlic was smuggling within those 'apples'.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Personally, I'm all for a special that's full on bonkers, as in Gotenks vs Super Buu meets Toon World (from Yugioh), but that's just me. Let's delve deeper into Gohan's mind after eating the apple in Dead Zone.

Re: DBZ Theme
Dark to the point where they take themselves seriously, like they did in Freeza and Cell saga. The one thing I really groaned about in BoG was that the comedy felt more stupid than actually funny. Some of the logic behind the jokes just didnt make sense, and the innocence dragonball had doesnt carry over in Z.
For DBZ, Darker tones and prolonged struggles = depth and is the only time where the series had its depth. I get Akira wants to make his stuff enjoyable for all audiences but some times too much comedy makes the plot feel dragging and corny. DBZ is only "funny" when the jokes make sense to the specific situation. Yo-Son Goku captured DBZ's humour perfectly because it wasnt trying to be funny, it was just making fun of the already established character relationships. Mainly Goku and Vegeta or Krillin and Piccolo. Its funny when they fight amogst each other like family members, not when they force themselves into obnoxious escapades like getting drunks and shotting their pregnant girlfriends -_-

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Re: DBZ Theme
I always thought the Dragon Ball franchise was great at doing both light hearted comedy and dark serious moments, and doing so has been one of the series greatest strengths.
I doubt anybody would really object to the idea of having a new OVA or movie with a darker tone. Heck, Toriyama himself has claimed that he likes the Bardock Special because it's darker than anything he would have written, or something to that extent.
However, cutting the light heartedness out of the franchise altogether would definitely be a mistake as it would lose a big part of it's identity.
