How bright is the Taiyō-ken?

I assumed it's as bright as the sun or a star.

I can't imagine that there is any way of measuring it. Bright enough to temporarily blind the opponent without doing any permanent damage...

Bright enough to blind you instantly. Kinda like a solar eclipse. Soon as you see it. You get blinded.

Seeing as it can be blocked by a pair of sunglasses, it's definitely not as bright as a direct view of a star that's only a few feet away. It also didn't cause any permanent damage to the Budokai audience, so it's probably just bright enough to cause a temporary distraction, which, incidentally, happily fits in to what it usually does.

Ever stared directly into the sun? Then you probably have a pretty good idea.

(Note: Don't actually stare directly into the sun).

It's just a sudden really blinding light.
Almost like a....solar flare.

You'd probably be ok with only staring at the sun for a few seconds. Staring at it for a good long minute is another matter.

Yeah I'm thinking the Taiyo-ken is brighter than looking at the Sun from Earth. It blinds people instantly and it is done in daylight. Though I think if you went from pitch black to looking straight at the Sun you might get the same affect. I remember seeing the Silent Hill movie at a theater and there was a scene that went from pitch black to super bright white that caused the whole movie theater to go "ahhh my eyes!" and look away. So I'm going to say bright enough to make daylight seem like darkness and the user seem like the Sun. Plus you would think Z fighters could handle looking at bright lights better than normal people since they seem to do everything else better.

And yet a simple pair of sunglasses was able to stop it.

Well, sure, Roshi may have found some legendary magical sunglasses on a quest somewhere :P

But the Budokai announcer? Somehow, I doubt that.

From what we've seen, it's a painfully bright light, but not to the point of causing permanent injury to the eyes. It takes several seconds to a couple minutes to recover enough from the intensity of the light, but it's still not anything that we've seen can cause permanent blindness. I would venture to say that it'd be the equivalent of the light from a Flashbang grenade.

That's my thought as well. I mean, the entire Budokai audience was exposed to Tenshinhan's Taiyoken, and managed to recover from it, and they are just normal people. It's definitely not as bright as the sun.

You probably right, it just has a short term effect as starring at the sun from earth but at a closer range.
