Dumb things you thought when you were a Noob to Dragon Ball

Post by Flame Dragon » Wed Mar 05, 2014 12:03 pm

This topic is different from this one.
This topic is dedicated to YOUR days as a noob, all the stupid things you did, all the dumb things you said, all the incorrect head-canon theories you made up, they all go here.

So unlike other topics, no YouTube comments from casual fans here.
Open your heart and tell us what you throught when you first discovered DragonBall years ago. Whether you were a noob or an expert, you may have throught/said something stupid. What is it?

I begin...

1) When i watched DBZ as a kid, i thought Gogeta and Vegito were the same character, so as a result i called the Potara Fusion Gogeta as well. Then when they started calling him Vegeth (Vegito name in the Italian dub) i was like "da fuck?" so i throught it was a dub error and kept being ignorant.

2) I thought Gogeta SSJ4 had red hair because he transformed into a SSJ5 when he fused. *facepalm*

3) I didn't know sparks were the "trademark" of SSJ2, then when i learned what the sparks meant i always forgot SSJ2 existed because of the anime always omitting sparks and also i wasn't still skillfull enough to spot the hair differences between SSJ and SSJ2, so the first time i learned about SSJ2 was when Goku turned SSJ3, i guess i thought Gohan was just pissed when he was a SSJ2.

I thought that the story started with Z and that anything from before that that we saw in flashbacks was seen for the first time in those flashbacks.

I thought that Goku was American >_>

I thought that "Dragon Ball GT" was what Dragon Ball Z was called in some other countries.

I thought that in addition to "Super Saiyan" and nick-named "Super Namek", there would also be "Super Android" and "Super human". I'd seen pictures of Kuririn with hair before the Buu arc aired, and I thought he grey hair when he became a super human.

I thought that Gohan - "go one", Goku - "go two", Goten - "go ten" was some sort of naming structure.

I thought that the dub was accurate. "North quadrant", "Bulma Briefs", "Dr Gero - leader of the Red Ribbon Army", "Spice Boys" and so on.

There may have been a point at which I thought every planet had a set of dragon balls.

I thought, partially thanks to the dub saying "ascendant Saiyan" and having heard of SSJ1,2,3,4, that it went "Super Saiyan 1", "Super Saiyan 2", "Super Saiyan 3", "Super Saiyan 4", "Ascendant Saiyan 1", "Ascendant Saiyan 2" etc. Me and my friends used to talk about "hyper Saiyan 2", "mega Saiyan 4" and stuff like that, that we thought might come later.

The dub said there were "five Grand Kais", so I believed that, and that each Grand Kai was the leader of four Kais, making twenty lower Kais in total.

Probably much more.

I can remember when I was first being told about later plot points (as in past the Androids first arriving) when I first got into the series, and hadn't yet checked out various websites (this may be before I had a computer at all, come to think of it), that I believed what a friend told me about Majin Boo being 'another creation of Dr. Gero'. So basically I thought the entire last half of DBZ dealt with Gero's revenge.

I also remember falling for the 'Turles is Goku's brother' thing for a little while too. Hmm...I don't think I ever fully bought into this one myself since I'd read stuff online by that point, but a friend of mine way back when was pretty dead set that the 'mysterious shadow creature' that Piccolo went looking for in Gingertown was actually Cooler...

DBZ was my first anime, but I really loved it so my mom got me a subscription to a DBZ magazine. But every time it said "Son Goku" I thought they were referring to Gohan...because he was well....the son of Goku. Then whenever it gave a plot summary or something I'd be like "no....Goku did that! Not Gohan! What?"

Then had my mom look it up on aol.com and I learned that not only is Son his last name, but first and last names are flipped in Japan. I was like 7, so don't judge.

You can judge a little.

I just watch Z and be done with it. I don't think/over think about anything (perhaps why I hardly enter the in-universe sub forum). Most of the time I only think of Z when I watch it or, on here obviously, and I'm a hardcore dubbist so I abide by that.

You could still probably call me a 'noob' lol.

When I got back into DragonBall in 2005 I vaguely remembered a time when I watched the Bardock special on Tv but I couldn't remember what Bardock looked like. So I used to think he looked like Raditz, which led to some laughable fanart. Another thing was that I thought AF was a real thing (didn't see that coming did you  ), that is until I stumbled upon the story on Daizenshuu where I later came to learn it was a joke. I also picked up a few dumb things from watching the subbed Arabic, Chinese and Thai dubs as that was the only way to watch it where I used to live.

By far the dumbest thing I thought was that Android 16 could perform the Kamehameha. Don't ask, I was 8 and frequently enjoyed playing Taiketsu, it was a very troubling time in my life.
Thanks to SSJ God Gogeta for the avatar.

- Goku was Superman-esque.
- Vegeta killed Grandpa Gohan (Thanks Ocean!)
- GT was made before Z

Those are the main three I can think of. I think the top one encompasses just about all the horrible dub characterisations that are horribly wrong.

In addition to the popular "Freeza was a woman" error (due to his dub voice), I also thought that Captain Ginyu was the same species as Freeza. This idea only intensified when I saw Freeza transform into his second form.

When DB was aired here, I saw a couple of pictures of DB GT and I though Kid!Goku and Pan where actually siblings/twins and grandchildren of Goku. Not exactly off but... I was so sure.
Check out Journey's End, a short story of Goku and Vegeta's final days. "Time is running out for the last two Saiyans"

Dragon Ball GT was going to be dark and gritty that it would have hard core sex scenes and swearing that would put South Park to shame.

When I was 10, I thought that the human Z fighters could turn Super Saiyan haha.
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

When I saw Dragon Ball Z for the very first time, when I was, like, 5 1/2, I literally thought Gohan and Kuririn were the same character, and he had some power which caused him to grow hair and glow... (hey, at least I got the glowing part right). I then immediately changed the channel, with a "Wtf did I just watch" kind of feeling going on in my head. Little did I know that a couple years later I would grow to love the series to this day :)

The biggest one, and one that is popular among many in the fandom I'm sure, concerns the nonexistence of Dragon Ball AF. I still remember that original image of SSJ5 and it haunts me to this day. It got to the point where many of my friends and I would talk about AF in elementary school and how excited we were to finally see it some day. At that point I don't think we had even much of GT though.

They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

I started watching the show in the middle of the first fight with Vegeta and thought Vegeta was some sort of evil twin of Goku.
Other than that...well, I never clued in on my own what was going on with HFIL. Seeing the uncut version reveal that it was Hell was news to me, but at the same time not all that surprising.

Well there's heaps from when I was a kid and a teenager.

When I was a kid
Yamcha, Bulma and Vegeta had a THREESOME and had Trunks (I read the "Yamcha is a playboy" thing in K-zone magazine a week later)
I believed in the Next Dimension bullshit but then I realised after a year that they were actually dead.
Yamcha KIDNAPPED Chichi in Dragonball
Lunch saved Goku from her blond self in Dragonball in her debut episode (which was actually the scene where General Blue kidnapped everyone and placed a bomb in Kame House)
That the OCs that I saw on the internet were real
Broly was going to be a good guy when he appeared in DBZ
I also believed rumours told to be by classmates (who were also into DB back then, being 2002 and all) such as Kaioshin became an android with a plastic bottle for a head, Gohan and Videl getting married in the forest shortly after Gohan getting KOd by Buu, etc

When I was a teenager
I got the ages and the years in DB wrong (EG: Goku being "16" in the 23rd Budokai as opposed to being 19, Yamcha being 17 instead of 20 in the 22nd Budokai, Pilaf saga taking place in Age 747 instead of Age 749 etc)
Wishes she can change her name to YamchaFan (her name everywhere else)
Obssessed with the Earthlings and the original DB anime

I, like a dumbass, pretty much spoiled everything for myself before I watched the show but I remember the first time I heard the name Trunks I pictured someone who looked like Broly.

When I was a kid, I thought that Goku only got stronger when he grew up, and then when he turned Super Saiyan & beyond. So, he never got stronger as a kid until he grew up into an adult, and he never got stronger as an adult, until he transformed...
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

There used to be a comic book store in my hometown that I used to frequent as a kid which was pretty good for importing a lot of stuff from Japan. At the time the Pokemon craze was in full force and I was just starting to watch Dragonball Z on Toonami.

I remember that they had loads of the 1990's Bandai Dragonball Z and GT Figures, the latter of which - such as Super Saiyan 3 Kid Goku, were pretty confusing to someone who'd only really seen the Freeza saga and was under the impression that, apart from Goku and Vegeta, all of the Saiyans had died out.

To explain this, the shop owner told me that the strange characters were actually from a series called Dragonball GT, set 300 years before Dragonball Z, and most importantly, before the Saiyans died out. Why he told me this I, to this day, do not know. He either wanted to confuse an enthusiastic 10 year old kid, or he genuinely didn't know himself and just made it up - but yeah, I believed it for a time.

... And then we got the Internet. 8)
