Questions about the Rock the Dragon set

Post by samuraix123 » Thu Mar 06, 2014 11:10 am

Hey guys! Is the Rock the Dragon set really worth getting if I already have the first 3 movies uncut and the original box sets? anything special about it? How's the quality match up to the original release?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I have the original sets and this. I can honestly tell you that the Rock the Dragon set looks great. And the book is great. There are no extras so you're not missing much on that end. As for quality, I imagine it's better, but I can't confirm it, I never matched them up.

What kind of pisses me off, and I hope you know what I'm talking about, is that after all these years they couldn't fix the opening. You know on the DVDs how in the opening when Shen Long is shown and the screen gets all yellow and just looks really bad? It looks like a mistake and I know that on TV it didn't look like that. Well, they haven't fixed it. It looks like they put the exact same thing out for re-release.

Haven't got a clue what you're talking about bud :P
When it shows the yellow part? Are you talking about the blast from the Dragonballs underneath him glowing? here's the intro you can point out to me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vDFFPoJ-D8

It's a great collectible as the book has interesting information, great artwork and the "Ocean Dub" episodes 1-53 and films 1-3.

I would recommend to buy a fat-pack for the DVDs though because keeping them in the book is not healthy at all for the discs.

Can you elaborate on this? I also have no idea what you're talking about.

See, this intro is the normal version. Pop in your DVDs and watch the intro. The first time the instrument kicks in while it's doing the pan across the forest, it gets all yellow and pixelated. I can't be the only one that noticed that. I can't be going crazy! Lol

There we go. I don't know, it always looks a little odd and I can't get over it. It's because I know there's a version without that.

Okay I think I see what you're talking about. You're talking about the yellow flashing behind shenron? Looks like a lightning effect to me? doesn't look error-ish

Every time I watch it on my TV it looks like the picture just spazzed out lol I'm sure it's on purpose, it just looks odd every time I see it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too, a lighting effect which would make sense to include in a scene like this.

I'm willing to do it when I get back from school tonight, but I'm aware that the comparison shots may not be fully accurate. I just play them, pause them, snapshot them, and save them as pngs. I don't know how to make it super accurate lol

I don't know what the issue Greatness is referring to, but I've seemed to come across one that bumps up in a flash and then disappears.

Before

After

It just looks darker and grainier but not sure I'd call this a video error.

Although I think we're not supposed to see Shen Long decapitated (his neck goes upwards so there's that) like this:

RtDE Raw Opening will be available here: http://youtu.be/_fTKubqsCVk (expect YouTube to do its own filtering, though)

Oh!~

That?! Yea, as samuraix123 said it's a lightning effect. Here's some comparisons...

Original Pioneer release...

Captain Ginyu - Assault DVD release...

Rock the Dragon release...

And here's the shot without the effect from from the DragonBox...

Why would they do that?

Zunama comes to mind but he was only in GT.

Because it looks like, for whatever reason, Funimation cut Shenlong and the foreground elements (trees, animals) out and placed them on a new background. Just look at the sky in the background of the DBox release and then the Funi DVD footage ones.

I would definitely recommend the RTD set. It has all the previews and eye catches and even "Stand by for Dragonball Z!" on Tree of Might. The quality is good too. I'd say it's the best Dragonball-related purchase I made last year. The only problem I have with it is the difficulty in getting the discs out. Aside from that the book rocks :)
