What's Going On With Kame-Sen'nin Voice?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

What's Going On With Kame-Sen'nin Voice?

I just rented "The Path to Power" ... he sounds different. Was the other guy sick that day? :)

No... he was... uhhh... deceased. Kôhei Miyauchi passed away in June of 1995. Hiroshi Masuoka became the "official" voice for the character in light of this, and did DBGT, the 10th anniversary movie, and the latest video games.

I was wondering if he has passed. I didn't see anything browsing through the movie guide (maybe I missed it) about the voice change. I wasn't too sure if it was just me hearing things, or what. I thought maybe it just kind of sounded different because it was in stereo ... and I'm used to mono. Also, I didn't know what the original guy's name was.

Call me crazy.

The day Masako Nozawa goes ... OH, I don't even want to think about it.

Has anyone else who worked on Dragonball passed away?

That's because he died in 1995, the same year the movie guide came out. GT and the 10th anniversary movie came out afterwards.

If Hiroshi Masuoka was the VA who voiced Roshi in Budokai Tenkaichi, then I must say, he is absolutely terrible in comparison with the great Kôhei Miyauchi, bless his soul. I definitely prefer Mike McFarland (Roshi's FUNi's dub voice), he delivered the line "Thanks for the dragonballs, Goku..." a thousand times better than Mr. Masuoka had in the final DBGT episode, both voice-wise and emotionally, and I loved McFarland's addition to that line: "...and I hope your journey brings you back home, someday." It is definitely something that makes me prefer McFarland over Masuoka, and without a doubt, McFarland can actually get me better emotionally than Masuoka can (the said line from the last GT episode, his final words to Piccolo Daimao in original DragonBall [a dialogue delivery I actually prefer over Mr. Miyauchi's]). It sucks that Toei and SPIKE just couldn't have used recycled stock audio of Kôhei Miyauchi for Budokai Tenkaichi, kinda like how Warner Brothers is recycling Marlon Brando in the upcoming "Superman Returns" movie, Masuoka really gets on my nerves.

By the way, 500th post, ladies and gents'! If anyone wishes, feel free to give a "congrats"! :)

Actually, for the 10th Anniversary Movie only, Kame-Sen'nin was voiced by Kin'ya Aikawa. I find Masuoka's Roshi a reasonable approximation of Miyauchi's original, while Aikawa's is jarringly different. I don't really know why they used him for the movie.

Hahahaha. Mike got oooowned, by his second in command to boot. Anyway, I've yet to hear either, all I know is the original Kame Sen'nin; maybe I am just lucky in the sense that my order of Path to Power from Amazon was the edited version, as opposed to the uncut.
I didn't even know there was an edited DVD of that one, until I saw the packaging; but even so, I was and am far too lazy to raise hell over it.

Eventually I'll hear it, unless someone wants to save me some time and post a few comparison clips. >.>

I thought you were talking about the movie guide daizenshuu (#4?). I think I'll step back from the thread and let Mike's flaming error overshadow my own. :P

The Movie Daizenshu is #6 (the only one of the basic seven I haven't managed to get my hands on... wahhh!).
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Heh, what's more, Kinya Aikawa was also the original Japanese "Racer X" from Speed Racer, aka Mach Go! Go! Go!

But his Roshi voice in the anniversary special makes kittens melt and eats dead bodies. It's BA----D, basically.
I don't know if I like your FACE...

Don't you have Budokai Tenkaichi? Hiroshi Masuoka's voice is obviously there for Roshi, all you have to do is play a duel or a match with him in "Z Battle Gate", and his voice will be open to your ears. There's a solution for comparison.

AH~!!! Good point, I didn't even think of that. I forgot I even had the game since I haven't played any console games since it came out, lol.
