Kai feels more fresh and things move more quicker. The best version of the DBZ era of the manga we are going to get in my opinion.

Kai, because it moves faster.

Faster doesn't mean it's better, just take a look at Dragon Ball Kai: Season 3 of its Great Saiyaman arc the editing and pacing is so sloppy that I really hated almost every episode of this arc but then afterwards on Episode 6 more or less everything changed completely for the better.

I guess they figured out that for a TV show to work they couldn't do it as fast as the manga because it needs to be entertaining and enjoyable, which is what Kai's Great Saiyaman wasn't very much.

So anyway, I'll go with Dragon Ball Z over Dragon Ball Kai because even with the filler it feels like they've took their time and made it better for TV viewers. Although, for the Saiyan arc to Freeza's arc the Kai version is pretty awesome and better than Z in this aspect.

Undoubtedly Z.

Why?

1. Original seiyuu's work at its finest. Some personal favourites are no longer in Kai

2. Kikuchi's soulful musical score.

3. Fillers. Though some are excrutiating, Cell Saga fillers provide nice build-ups, while Buu Arc fillers are ROFL

4. The title age. Z was made late 80's or early 90's. But the animation still holds up very well without jarring only quality rendered Op & Ed alone.

5. Above all else, nostalgic factor. 5 year-old chibi inside me awakes each time Goku smiles :) :D

I'm gonna go with Z, because I know a lot of people will think this is dumb but it lasts longer, when I do my yearly run it usually lasts me from January to May, had I watched Kai I'd be done about 3 months earlier.

Also the music is inconsistent, there's either Kenji Yamamoto (which I don't like tbh) Kai Kikuchi (which I'm glad is there but some of the tracks are horribly misplaced) and Majin Boo uses an entirely different soundtrack which I personally am indifferent to but it would throw me of for it to completely change like that.

Lastly it's partly "MUH NOSTALGIA" since I did watch Z first (albeit through poor fansubs which I hold a special place in my heart for :) ) However I have sometimes seen Kai on tv and put it on just because "It's Dragon Ball why not!" and the added bonus that Kai's English dub is waaaay better than Z's (Though I don't feel it reaches the Original Japanese <3 )
thomas1up are fuckin terrible and need to fuck off asap all the other noobs are decent thouhg

Kai, because it's faster , better, and closer to the manga. The fights are also better in Kai than in Z IMO, and the pacing of the story is great.

I like the Yamamoto music, the Kikuchi music in the last 3 episodes of Cell arc, and while the Sumimoto music isn't that good so far, it's not bad either, it's just... there.

The Boo arc looks awful with the green tint, but when color corrected, it looks awesome. I like the picture quality in Kai in general, and I believe it looks better than it does in the DBoxes. And while censoring can be annoying, it rarely ever happens, and even when it does, I can re-watch the scenes with all the gore in DBZ.

The voice acting of the seiyus is fine in my ears, I don't have any problem there.

The only reason I would watch DBZ is when I want to watch everything along with the fillers, or when I want to watch my favorite moments, because the music in DBZ is better IMO.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Z for acting of Jpn. Kai for other dubs and pacing. The music is also better in Kai IMO. I just don't like worthless filler. Sad part is that Kai still has some. Though for Boo arc I'll say Z is better

Which dubs exactly do you think are better in Kai and how is the music better?

The Gallego, Catalán, FUNimation English and others are better in Dragon Ball Kai but dubs such as Brazilian Portuguese and Latin Spanish at their best is definitely in Dragon Ball Z. Such a shame that the Latin Spanish and Brazilian dubs got the turdy censored-again Nicktoons version than the original uncut (which is also censored but still better).

Z all around for me. Kai is good but there is a lot of filler I enjoyed. And the battles somehow felt more climactic in Z. Like they went on for so long you felt there was more on the line.

Dubs better in Kai
Korean(my prefer way of watching since its my language
English
Madarian
Lantin America is equal to Z besides being a edited version

The music in Kai before the whole scandal was better. Fits the tone of the series and awesome on action part. Very well done and even had some great unused theme. Win Tough Fight! The Lone Warrior is amazing.

Dialogue: For some parts, Japanese Z; for others, English Kai

Voice Acting: Generally Japanese Z

Music: Generally Kikuchi Z

Pacing: Kai

Animation: Kai when not counting redrawn scenes; Z when counting said scenes

Fights: Japanese Z

Story Presentation: Too little information to say (haven't watched enough Japanese Kai)

I used to swear by Kai due to Yamamoto's score but as I've been rewatching Z for the first time in a long while, it's started depending on my mood.

Some days I can sit through Z with absolutely no issues whatsoever but others, I find it painfully slow and hard to endure.

Kai (excluding the Buu arc) is certainly the more 'cinematic' experience but I miss all of the great insert songs and performances from the original.

EDIT: I'm referring to the original audio when I speak here. I tend to forget to consider dubs. Dub-wise, I'm watching Kai for accuracy and Ocean/Westwood Z for nostalgia.

In Japanese I can't really decide I like both, but for the Funimation dub, Kai hands down.

Kai. The pacing is way better and I can watch it in both Japanese and English, enjoying both sides. While Z does handle some moments better with the slower pace, it mostly drags on and on. I feel just a little faster pace from the original Dragon Ball would be the perfect pacing. Dragon Ball felt a little slow to me sometimes, but not painfully slow like Z.

Prefer Z but kai is also lovely.

Z for Shunsuke kikuchi's amazing and soulful score, voice acting is in it's prime, I actually love the filler, chala head chala, we gotta power, original insert songs.

Kai for the beautiful updated animation and Kenji Yamamoto.

Kai because I love the English Dub.

Z is a close second, and my preferred way to watch it in Japanese.

Depends on which version we're talking about. If we're talking about the original Japanese version, then Z, if we're talking about the English dub, then Kai.

I think DBZ is a superior show overall, and in a perfect world, I would have preferred that FUNimation either re-dubbed DBZ in the style that they did Kai or that they just dubbed DBZ that way from the beginning. Of course, to be clear, I don't blame them for not re-dubbing DBZ now because there's no way they'd make back their money. However, DBZ felt like a more realistic story because of the filler (life itself isn't condensed to "just the important parts), and Kikuchi's music was borderline-flawlessly placed. I was happy to see some filler go in Kai (die, Fake Namek arc, die and never come back), but there were many bits of filler that I was sad to see go.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Z by far

1 - BGM is the best ever! Thank you Shunsuke Kikuchi
2 - I enjoy the fillers with no problem (especially the garlick junior and the other world tournament sagas). I saw the series so many times, that I got used to them.
3 - I can enjoy it with my dub and the original japanese cast.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
