Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods has been, thus far, quite a successful venture for Toei, so a sequel seems inevitable. The only question is, should the movie keep the traditional 2D style that Battle of Gods did, or follow Toei's other recent big budget films of classic franchises and go with CG animation?
Of course, 2D Animation would be significantly cheaper (as good looking CG isn't cheap), and it did work with the prior movie, but Toei really has been pushing their CG lately.
CG-wise, they're currently working on Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary (which they've said has their highest movie budget, and I've heard it was around $100,000,000):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nCH7N9R5yc
They did a Captain Harlock movie before it in CG (with a budget of $30,000,000, but sadly, it only ended up making $21.6 million overall):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1oIG9yusS8
Despite my great initial fears, the CG Movies Toei has put out look quite good, and that lead me to wonder...could Dragon Ball benefit from such a movie? If any series could really sell well worldwide, it's Dragon Ball. I think it could be cool to do a movie for the series in CG for the next one...but I'm curious as to what you guys think.
CG or 2D? And why?

The 3d in the last movie wasen't that good so i think they should stick with 2d
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

2D seems cheaper. Toei will likely do 2D, but I'm surprise that they didn't make the movie in 3D.

Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If they ever do step away from 2D animation for the entirety of a film, then I want something like the art direction in Dragon Ball Online's Base of Tenka'ichi video. Though, obviously with a larger budget to polish things up to a more professional film level.
The only real benefit I see to doing a film like this though, at least for now, is the prevention of the characters from ever being off model. Everything else can and has pretty much been done in the current 2D style.

2-D. I have no inclination to want one in 3-D, it would end up looking like the cut scenes in the games. >_<
Or worse, like those brief 3-D moments in BOG.

2D for the love of god 2D.
The 3D in BoG was awful so I really don't want Dragon Ball to look anything like ... THAT
Dragon Ball has always been 2D and for the love of God should stay that way.

Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
The opening/trailer for Dragon Ball Online and the opening/cut-scenes for some of the newer Dragon Quest franchise show that Toriyama's artwork can translate well into CG. But the stuff in Battle of Gods was awful and so are all of the other video game openings. I personally hope they just stick with 2D.
Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
Well of course I'm not talking CG on the level of the video game openings, or even of BoG (I don't believe the budget for BoG was that high).
I showed a few trailers of Toei CG with a good budget. I was thinking more along those lines, with a more Dragon Ball style.
When thinking of CG, I mean good quality, high budgeted CG for a theatrical movie where CG is required for much of it, not "here's our minute and a half opening for a game" CG or "we got some extra money, so here's one cheaply done CG scene".

Still no, I don't care if it's the best damn looking CG in the world, Dragon Ball is 2D and it should stay that way, it's not right any other way.

The next movie should be made in claymation just to throw everyone off.

Why not have a 3D 2D movie? Lion King work pretty well in 3D and I think Dragon Ball can too.

Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
What I get from the new Saint Seiya trailer is that it's shaping up to be a summer blockbuster kinda movie to satisfy the fan-base hunger for the over-the-top action which BOG should have been.Mewzard wrote:CG-wise, they're currently working on Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary (which they've said has their highest movie budget, and I've heard it was around $100,000,000)
Now onto Next DB movie.
If the next movie is going to have very low intensity small scale fight scenes like BOG with zero sense of Dramatic Moments,Intensity,Atmosphere/vibe,Tension then making it in 3D(3D limits scale, scope and intensity?) same as new Saint Seiya would be a good idea. but I don't think Toei will be able recoup the $100M if the new movie will be in the same vein as BOG as Fans wouldn't be fond of or willing to watch the next underwhelming installment in the DB series.
I think henceforth DB movies would go downhill if they choose to not respect
i)the original Canon(introducing too many retcons since BOG)
ii)their Fan-base
iii)the soul of the original manga.

Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
I watched Short Peace yesterday and I have to say, they threw in 3D and 2D together but it was just so noticeable. I didn't like it as it takes me out of my viewing experience. If you ever get a chance to watch it, you will see what I mean. I love 2D, and when you watch how beautiful that medium can look (much better than 3D which I find looks awkward and cheap pretty much all the time), it pains me to see how 3D takes over the market because it does involve less labour and effort than traditional 2D animation.Hellspawn28 wrote:Why not have a 3D 2D movie? But if they did go with 3D, I wouldn't mind Tenkaichi 1's opening style as that was the best looking 3D animation they ever did for the Dragonball series. It didn't look too stiff and the models and animation was pretty good along with the style and graphics. I really like the opening actually.
But otherwise I hope they will stick with 2D. I am just not terribly fond of their current character designs and colour palette they use for the series presently.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Hellspawn28 meant 3D as in depth perception, not computer rendered images mixed in with hand drawn frames a la Short Piece or Battle of Gods.

2D animation! I would choose that for every animated property if given the choice.

I actually think it's time to do 3D CG animation. It'll be a bigger draw as it'll be something new visually and it could look really good. Let me rephrase what I said actually, it's time to do it and it could look really awesome, but only if they actually give it a decent budget to pull off such good visuals. They tend to low-ball budgets for Dragonball so if it's gonna look like cheap CG then don't do it. But that Saint Seiya trailer looked really, really good.

Dragon Ball has been an iconic show that's been in 2D animation since it's creation, taking something like that and making it CGI feels... Wrong, it's all well and good for film makers to use cgi for their films but taking a 2D creation and masking it 3D isn't something I'm a fan of.

Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
I would have been on-board with that maybe several years ago. I am not against 2D animation at all. But I also don't think it pays to not try new things or move forward just because it has always been 2D so far. I'm at a point now, where I think I'm ready to see what that would be like. But I'm not against 2D either.thomas1up wrote:I dunno, I'd be completely against it.bleed0range wrote:I actually think it's time to do 3D CG animation. I want to continue down the hand drawn route, but have a better director who has better connections with freelance animators. Nagamine Tatsuya or Ootsuka Takashi would be perfect for this, especially Ootsuka. His directing for PreCure is top-quality and he even has a working relationship with Tanaka Hironori.

Is this CGI?
I wonder how the characters and Ki would look CGI.
