Role Models in the Dragonball/Z series.
I remember browsing on Tumblr and I saw many Tumblr posts about Role Models in the Dragonball/Z Series.
I saw one user talk about how Bulma is her role model because she's intelligent and independent. While I do like Bulma, does anyone here think she's a good role model??
I also saw a guy say that Vegeta was his role model and then there's this female user who made a tumblr post gushing about Chi-Chi and said she was her role model. I also saw how someone said Gohan was his role model because he proves you can be a good athlete and scholar.
For me, Android 18 is my role model/favorite female character because he has a bad past, but she does make up for it by being a caring wife and mother.
What do you guys think? Do you guys think most characters in this show are good role models??

In a sense, most of them are role models. They train hard to attain their strength, press forward and never give up. All of these qualities can be reflected into people's lives. No lie, every time I see Vegeta, I make it my goal to hit the gym a couple times for the week.

Honestly...actually, you know what? Yeah, I would. I was about to make a snarky joke about how even the characters that are the best people are generally pretty bad role models in other cases - looking at you here, neglectful-father Goku
- but even a bad role model, in a constructive way anyway, can be a good one, by proxy of being a model of what not to be or what not to do.
Other than looking really deep into it like that though, I'd say Kuririn would make for a pretty good role model. Always tries his best, even if he knows it's not going to do any good; has absolutely no ego about his own ability compared to others; is always supportive of his friends.

I wouldn't use any of them as role models.

Re: Role Models in the Dragonball/Z series.
You can be a role model in a limited area. Goku is a great role model for pushing past limits and enjoying one's life, however, he's not a role model for parenting, even though I don't think he's as bad as some claim. A real life example of what I'm talking about is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's a great role model for goal setting and motivation, but a really crappy one in terms of emulating someone's personal life.
Future Trunks is a good role model for being an all around good person, even in the worst of conditions. He has every reason to be cynical, but he remains hopeful.

The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Um...Goten!? He's easily the best role model of series. He shows friendship love better than any character. He showed emotion better than anyone. In Gt he cared for his gf with his life. Goten the greatest. Viva Son GotenRandomGuy96 wrote:I wouldn't use any of them as role models.

He's a rampant, rancid, racket child. He doesn't show any signs of intelligence and is mostly thrown in the show purely for the comedic escapades he shares with Trunks.TheGmGoken wrote:Um...Goten!? He also refuses to take anything seriously and squanders his natural gifts due to laziness. He's like the anti role model.

I consider Goku as perfect role model.
Look beyond the negativity in every person. The good side.
1st of all, keep yourself Happy. The positive vibration in itself would change people around you. Ex: Piccolo, Tien, Vegeta.
Strength isn't about physical prowess. Its about heart.
Goku embodies purity. Something which lacks among most people nowadays.

To be fair, Goten is only seven at that time and most 7 year olds are very immature.RandomGuy96 wrote:He also refuses to take anything seriously and squanders his natural gifts due to laziness. He's like the anti role model.

Anyways damn power when you can be normal. Poor Goten had to cancel a date cause of Goku selfish wishes(he even didn't finish tournament) . In Gt he protected his girl with his life. Viva Son Goten. He shows us how to be a kid and have friendship. He had no father and still came out perfect almost. Compared to every other flawed character

Yes, they were definitely role models.
I did wanted to be as smart as Bulma. :laugh
I also wanted to be a cheerful and happy like Goku. To keep a "pure heart". Etc...
And sure, they all have flaws, but that only made it easier for us to say, well, I shouldn't do that.

With Bulma, she does motivate me to get my head on the books a lot more in college. She's so smart and she owns her own company for crying out loud!soulnova wrote:Yes, they were definitely role models.

Re: Role Models in the Dragonball/Z series.
Almost every character(the good guys) in Dragonball is a role model for me. I never had much of a dad until he went away thank god and Goku was such a father figure to me as silly as that sounds. I know it sounds pathetic but I wished that a-lot of the characters were real.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I admit that Goku is kind of a role model for me. As a teenager, I was clumsy, shy and introverted. I still am to a degree, but martial arts (specifically karate) helped me become confident in myself. Even though I am not a natural athlete, I admire Goku's heart and motivation to better himself. I try to apply that with myself. Even if I feel like I fall, the 'fighter' in me kicks into gear and tells me to fight for what I want and never give up.

Re: Role Models in the Dragonball/Z series.
I think Goku is a great role model. I try to have a joyful and optimistic attitude in all situation, and take pleasure in overcoming hardships. I hope that I have a relationship with my kids like he does, in that they love being around their father, and he pushes them to greatness. I don't know a child that ever spent as much time with their parents as Goku did with Gohan. I grew up being scared of my dad, and rarely saw him growing up. Most kids barely see their dad anyways, because they are at work, and the kids are at school or doing extracurricular activities. If I ever get embarrassed about saying something, I think of his "lying contest" quote, and get rid of the temptation. I end up thinking of Vegeta whenever it comes to working out, since I relate with his character the most. I get angry at myself and use pride for motivation, however I think of Final Atonement, when I need to put the greater good over my pride.

Goku - Be kind and optimistic.
Gohan - Stand up, be brave.
Vegeta - Put your pride aside.
Trunks - Change your Future.
Bardock - Fight until the end.
Piccolo - Forget the past.
And so on..
They are great characters. Each of them can be a role model in a way.

As a child, I absolutely wanted to emulate Gohan on the basis that he was both intelligent and incredibly strong. He also saved the world when he was ten years old and I mean come on how cool is that?!
I also agree with those who highlighted Goku based on his physical prowess. The guy may not be the best father sure but I think his ability to overcome enemies and generally speaking never give up is a pretty useful benchmark to have.
Don't ask me why but I'm also deeply curious if anyone will dare to nominate the villains at some point. Like 'I want to be Piccolo because he was King of the World'

Majin Buu (Fat or Pure) demonstrated the value of a simple life. They knew what they wanted, and had the time of their lives getting it. That's a pretty admirable trait, if you ask me. Sometimes, you just need to let go and enjoy yourselfLumos wrote:
