Why do we need a BIG roster for?
And I mean a roster full of 200 characters. Why that? Things like that were cool back then, but now people are looking for uniqueness in gameplay. I don't see the reason why some people like to bash NB for not continuing putting many characters that either are boring or didn't do shit in the series? It'd take a LOT of time for them to put in over 200-400 characters, unless if they company is gonna make them play the same. And if that's so, then I see why people like Dimps better than Spike. Even Artdink knows how to make the player feel like their playing the character. So yeah, to yall who want a big roster, tell me why.
And PS: DON'T YOU DARE bring up the "every character fights the same" BS. That's totally untrue. Look at Super DBZ and most of the fights in the series.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
I prefer good gameplay over fan service. The Sparking games became all flash and no substance. It made most fans spoiled rotten as they won't play a game even with 40 - 60 characters. We never had this issue during the Budokai game or during the old school days of DBZ fighting game. Fans should care about having a fun good game then having "this dude from filler episode 13023429213" in the game.

And that's funny cuz half of the characters that were in the Tenkaichi series should've been support characters, matter in fact, the Tenkaichi games should've had a support character system like in the Naruto Storm games.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
Because I want to play with the characters I like and that includes characters they have never put into games or only once or twice. Additionally, having a lot of characters and them being unique isn't mutually exclusive. It depends on how much time/effort the developers can put into these games and secondly what you see as unique for yourself.
This is why I want characters from the originals series and more importantly some from GT because they never or only very rarely use those. If done right, they can even put in characters that never did anything by figuring out some neat techniques and skills from scratch. But that's probably expecting far too much from NB. They apparently don't have the incentive to do something like that.
I don't look for super complex gameplay in Dragon Ball games. I just want to play with my favorite characters the way they fight in the show. And BT3 did that splendidly for the most part.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
I hate the we term. But "we" want a big roster not NEED. I'm a huge fan of Budokai 3, Infine World, and Tenkaichi 2 roster. Great roster without overdoing it. Honestly never found out why Kwiwi and Appule made it but not the shadow dragons.
Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
Because I'm not dropping 40bux on a game to play as Goku vs Vegeta again.
Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
To have more options to play with
what's better : 10 charecters that are compleatley diffrent or 50 that are diffrent enough ?

July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
Because if we don't get big rosters we'll always get the same characters and that will be boring in my opinion. If they can do a good engine and differentiate the characters just enough, I'll be happy with that game. Sparking Meteor did a good job, and so did Raging Blast 2 in that regard.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
I want a big roster for the same reason I want a Dragon Ball game to begin with: To play as the characters from the series. To play "with the show".
I like to use Bardock against Freeza Soldier B the same way I'll use Freeza Soldier B against Super Saiyan 4 Goku. It's not about "needing" it, it's about liking to have the option to do so.
I like Advanced Adventure, Hyper Dimension and Super Dragon Ball Z, with a short roster and better gameplay, but I also like Sparking Meteor. Liking one does not mean not liking the other, and it shouldn't. We're also starting to reach a point,as far as both the hardware and software, where I no longer see why we need to sacrifice one for the other (for any reason other than lack of investment from both the developing and publishing side of things) and this discussion loses its relevance.
In short: The series has a lot of characters. Different people like different characters, the same way some people want to play as Dragon Ball characters and some just want D.Gray-Man.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
I see the real problem as being that we still seem to have to have one or the other. Granted, I understand (to a degree anyway, I'd never claim to be an expert) that the more characters you have, the harder it is to make them all play differently from each other...but when you're working with a franchise that has THIS many characters, it's kind of sad to see so many left on the cutting room floor.
I mean, heck, look at poor Chaozu. Yes, he really contributes nothing to the story...but he has some great potential to play differently from others, given how bizarre he is. And it was still a good many years before we finally saw him included in a game.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
Yeah I love having a billion characters but if it (sadly) has to be one or the other I think I'd take unique characters instead. But I don't see why we cant have both anymore, I mean if they made a game that met both needs it'd be the biggest selling DB game of recent history but they don't see that...

Re-release Budokai 3 and Raging Blast 2 with Dragonball Heroes roster.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
So people can complain more about shallow gameplay. A platformer can get away with mostly same characters as it's the level design that counts. A fighter doing it can not as level design is not important, the amount of options per character is.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
I'm all for a big roster in DragonBall games, but with exceptions of course. For instance I don't see the point in playing as someone who shoots off one Ki blast and then dies, looking at you Freeza soldier. It'd be nice if they included more GT as well. I know a very large percentage of the fan base dislikes it but it would be nice if they accommodated those of us who do enjoy it. Or better yet made a game solely based around GT, what's it been 9 years now?
I think the reason most people want big roster is because of Tenkaichi 3, it set the bar pretty high in terms of how many characters you could pack into a DragonBall game. DragonBall Heroes doesn't help much either with it's alluring roster of characters that have never been in a game before, which is the better way to go I think - Have a bunch of guys you've never played as, instead what happens is they keep trying to get back some of what Tenkaichi 3 had whilst adding a few new guys to justify it.
Namco Bandai sure does have an annoying "one step forward, two steps back" mentality when it comes to recent DragonBall games. At least that's how I see it.

I disagree about Freeza soldier, I would prefer he's added with several costumes and selectable multiple times so you can do fights like Bardock vs the 4 dodoria henchmen.
Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
It was just an example really, it could have been anybody. I was just saying I don't see the need for useless characters like that, it would be the same as if they put Yamu in it or an Arlian from that filler episode. I'd like to think they include characters like the Freeza soldier for the sake of completion, but let's face it if that was the case then we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.Darknat wrote: I disagree about Freeza soldier, I would prefer he's added with several costumes and selectable multiple times so you can do fights like Bardock vs the 4 dodoria henchmen.

Well, I woldn't mind Yamu or even an Arlian. Those characters didn't have any fights really, but they could be original and give them new moves as they did with Tapion, Seripa or Kibitoshin.
The main reason because they added Freeza soldier and Appule back then was because Tenkaichi 2 used their models for Bardock's story. So they recycled them and put them into the Wii version of Tenkaichi 2.
Tenkaichi 3 was a good engine for adding lots of characters easily, The only things I personally would have changed from the engine would have been adding ground combat, adding more moves per character (there were free button combinations for at least 2 more blast 2 and 3 more blast 1 attacks), adding the ability to deflect energy attacks (as in RB2), and adding grabbing as it happened in Super Butoden 3.

If they had to have those sorts of characters in the game I would rather they paid more attention to giving them unique movesets; however, the problem there is they only have a certain amount before the game has to be out. If they wanted to make a truly worthwhile DragonBall game they would have to:
Give the project to an all ready experienced developer who has worked on it before (Dimps, Spike)
Spend longer than a year working on the project
Go all the way with the roster, adding all necessary characters for a complete re-telling of the story (should they wish to follow the original story that is)
But the way things are at the moment, you'd be lucky to even get half of that.

I'm someone that prefers quality over quantity but I can see why people want a large roster. They release a game every year. People not only want more content but they expect it.

Re: Why do we need a BIG roster for?
Roster is only for replay value and variety as there is only so long you can play DBZ without getting bored of the same thing you've already had offered before. But in exchange for a huge roster is, development time cuts just to model them, gameplay effort is reduced to save time, and the often randomizer system they have choosing who gets put in makes it so unpredictable that we often get useless characters like Babidi, Spopovich, Roshi, King Cold, Kid Chi Chi etc instead of legitament, yet-to-be-seen adds like Chilled, Tora, GT Vegeta, Kid Uub, GT/Adult Goten, Eis Shenron.. Gine even (for what-if sake). The bigger issue is that, the fact large rosters never stay consistant. Adds today will be taken out for the sequel or just used as a gimmick in itself just for the privelige of having them: (Hachiyack).
The worst part of Spike's marketing is that they include transformations as seperate entities. Programing wise they are in their games but series wise. 5 Gokus is still Goku. Yet the fans get spoiled drunk on the roster and forget gameplay being a bigger priority. All throughout the RB phase, every single mention from the fans was on nothing but roster increases, but not to balance it by removing the weak characters in favour of stronger ones, just the addition of characters for the sake of it even if they're pointless (Kami, King Kai, Mummy man) because there is no standard set. Then when the sequel reguts the roster to the barebone essentials we got in UT, and BOZ it just turns into a monotinous reset instead of an improvement time and time again. BT has done a lot of ironic damage to the franchise thats gone too far. I'm all for a large roster but not if its just going to be nothing but a handful of simple collectables of characters that people dont even use like Appule or Freeza Soldier. However for Dimps games I kind of wish they did expand the roster. Not to massive extents like BT3 but to at least a fair 60. They've never put movie characters in the games besides Broly and Janemba... I want to play as Bojack, Zangya, and Turles in a Burst limit game.
For Spike's games I think we should have a character creator expanded enough to compensate for a roster. With the freedom to make your own range of characters of all base races, forms and genders, fans can make their own roster instead of waiting on luck for us to get characters we actually want.
The end result is, if you want all the characters to play differently, you cant expect a huge roster. Too much time needed for that and with the new characters as expendable as they are treated by the developers themselves, why bother? I'd rather just a good engine. I can life if characters share strings, I'm playing as so-&-so because I like these characters.

But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.
