Will Toei settle with a composer?

Post by Black_Liger » Sat May 31, 2014 2:32 pm

After Kikuchi left, there hasn't been a main db composer, tokunaga score was just for gt and a tv special, kenji yamamoto is out of the question, takaki was just for about some anime cutscenes and a tv special, and now it seems sumitomo is offiicially the new db composer as he was in the biggest db movie and is now in kai, but things can change.

You think Toei will settle with sumitomo or find a new composer sooner or later?

I think Sumitomo should stay, but surely there are other great names out there, like Kouhei Tanaka which would make for an awesome db composer

It depends on a mixture of how Toei feel about Sumitomo's work, how interested they are in maintaining consistency in future works and how Sumitoto feels about working for Toei.

Whilst they clearly have hired him to score the remainder of Kai on the back of their recent previous experience of working with him in Battle of Gods, in terms of future theatrical ventures, which are very much independent works, they may well wish to go in a different direction.

I think in the case of Kikuchi, the working relationship on both sides was good and he eventually became part of the furniture as so to speak, in that his work was so deeply engrained with the Dragonball anime that it seemed unthinkable for Toei to produce it without him. The fact that Toei went with a complete rookie in Tokunaga for GT was most likely a mixture of Kikuchi's choice to scale back his work commitments into semi-retirement and Toei's wish to give the new series a distinct feel and identity, separate from Dragonball and Dragonball Z.

In my opinion, I don't think Toei should stick with Sumitomo just for the sake of consistency at this point. Whilst I think a 'revolving door' of composers would be bad for the franchise, especially on the back of the instability caused by the Yamamoto scandal, I don't feel that Sumitomo's work has really left such an indelible impression on the franchise at this point as to make changing things up in future an unappealing concept. I personally would like to see how other composers would take on Dragonball.
