how much energy does flying consume?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

how much energy does flying consume?

Post by Strife1 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 7:45 pm

We know when Goku is on his way to Kaio's that he fly's there, but he's out of breath quickly and his reduced to running. Obviously it's more consuming than jogging, since he's forced to jog. Also, when characters want to travel and not be detected, they either fly by jet or run in bounds. Does this mean that running doesn't consume energy and flying actually takes a great deal of it?

It depends all on training, of course. Even Videl can fly but she cannot fly as good as the others can do. She even has problem keeping her eyes open so training s always the key. In the Freezer saga when the characters are hurt they have no energy left to fly so there is a least amount of energy they need it gets just less or easier for them. Before Goku was on the Snake path he did not fly too often.

Flying is purely a usage of ki so I suspect it has to do with a particular character's ability to control their ki. If they are experienced at controlling their ki, maybe they can move quickly using less ki than someone who isn't as experienced - I think about Goten and Videl both learning to fly at the same time and their difference in ability. So depending how well you can control the flow of your ki and direct it, flying for one person may consume more ki than flying for another person. As to how much energy it consumes numerically, well, I'm not the person to ask on that.

Running doesn't require ki to do (well, beyond a basic "if you're alive and in good condition you have some ki" sense), it's a basic bodily function... on the other hand, flight is a technique that uses ki. There's definitely a much higher rate of energy consumption from flying than running. The only time "run really fast" is going to consume a lot of ki is if you're running really fast (like, beyond what someone of your level would normally be capable of) due to amplifying your running speed with ki (there was a filler character in the afterlife tournament who did this, if I'm remembering right... weak fighter but his specialty was boosting his speed to insane levels so he could run circles around Goku for a while. But then just wore himself out.)

...at least, it uses up a lot more energy if you're using Bukujutsu. First seen in Dragonball (where the Bukujutsu users initially just float above the ground a bit rather than free-moving flight) and then later on in early Z (where flight tires Goku out if he does it for extended periods so he either runs or calls on the cloud if he needs to get somewhere far away.) Piccolo seems to have a different (and better?) technique which burns little or no energy, considering that he flew the whole way to the Raditz battle (while Goku didn't, to conserve energy) and definitely didn't seem to be already tired or weakened at the beginning of the fight. There's also the fact that Gohan learned to fly from Piccolo and then later passed his flight technique on to Videl, who was able to do the "basic float-up-off-the-ground" effortlessly as soon as she learned the technique and later flew without getting too exhausted even at levels a lot weaker than where Goku was at the beginning of Z (she just can't fly fast enough to keep up with the others, and has trouble with the wind and flying stuff getting in her eyes.)

Probably has something to do with individual ki control ability too, as mentioned before.
