Tenshinhan's Voice Actor

Post by ABED » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:28 pm

Every site that lists the VA's for Tenshinhan only lists Chris Cason and John Burgmeier as Funi's in-house actors, but I swear I recall two other actors. Am I remembering incorrectly?

Also, what are your thoughts on Burgmeier's performance?

Aside from way back when everyone was bad, I never had a problem with it--he fit the character, and did alright acting wise. Hardly Burgmeier's best role (Kurama) or even his second best (Elmer), but alright.

Of course, I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other for Ten, so there's that to take into consideration.

I hate it. I don't understand why Burgmeier has to do a ridiculous character voice; he doesn't have the excuse of playing multiple characters like Sabat or Schemmel. Here he is speaking normally and here he is in YuYu Hakusho. He's completely unable to do any actual acting while he's focused on a dumb voice.

As far as FUNi's in-house stuff goes, I'm pretty sure that's correct. Chris Cason pretty much only voiced him for that little bit we had at the end of the Freeza arc, when things first moved in-house. By the time the Androids material rolled around, Burgmeier had already taken over the role.

Honestly, I don't really have too much problem with Burgmeier's take. There is something to the argument I've heard that he sounds a little too irritated most of the time, but...not so much so that it really distracts me or anything. And there are certainly times where Tenshinhan can be pretty irritated - namely any time Vegeta is brought up.

That slight ethereal quality works for Kurama, he doesn't play many characters, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. In Kai, he is more or less using his speaking voice. I don't see why you "hate it", especially since that clip contains a very natural performance.

If that's the case, than he just can't act or is miscast.

I don't get your issue, as it's very natural sounding, and the clip was a good performance, Hebert was actually worse in that clip.

It's threads like this that makes me miss penguintruth, he always had wacky comments about Burgmeier's Tien. Personally I like it, and yeah a few random people voiced Tien during random times in the Frieza arc.

It baffles me when I see the number of negative comments concerning Tenshinhan, especially since I've seen so many that love Nadolny's Goku. Other than a few rough episodes from when Trunks first arrived, he's always given a good performance and was one of the more natural voices. At the very least you'd think people would say it was a step up from the Ocean dub voice actor.

Well, I have no problem with his voice for that matter. He's got a memorable performance, and yes, started out awkward, but improved over time like most of the of the others. From what I hear, he's even better in Kai. I haven't heard Chris Cason's performance at all, but I wonder why they changed it?

In the early Funi dub Chris Cason and Chris Sabat played a quadrillion voices. Chris Cason seemed to take on a lesser role in the production after the Frieza saga and so they recast some of his roles.

There were supossedly two voice actors playing Tien in the Blue Water dub; Jonathan Love and Brendan Hunter. However recently it was confirmed to be Brendan Hunter only. He is also re-curing his role in Ocean Kai which I cannot wait for :D
If you have any Canadian dubbed recorded material and would like to preserve it, please PM me!

I thought he sounded fine, and he got more of a chance to shine in DB since Tien had a bigger role there. And B, you should watch Fruits Basket, as everyone I know likes his Shigure.

Burgmeier's performance as Tenshinhan was perfectly serviceable, at least once he stopped focusing of doing a "tough-guy voice" and started just acting. Those early-Trunks/Androids episodes... YEESH.

His performance in the original DB and more recently, Kai, work better, more natural.

That seems to be the standard for FUNimation's cast: Pretty much everyone's acting improved dramatically once they all stopped trying to force out a "voice".
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Piccolo has always been the weirdest example of that to me. His voice was always pretty much fine but Sabat delivered all of his lines in this weird angry barking way that was beyond obnoxious. I always wondered who made that call and why. Piccolo is one of those dub voices that I adore and love maybe more than the Japanese version so it's just weird to see him so close so early on yet so far.

I don't remember what he sounded like in DBZ, but in Kai, Burgmeier sounds pretty emotionless. Like, I guess I can tell that he's trying for certain emotions, but it SOUNDS like he's trying. Like the voice is hard for him to do or something.

Tenshinhan's a fairly stoic character.

I've always liked John Burgmeier in the role. Especially in the DB dub. I have a hard time remembering what Chris Cason sounded like and there aren't any clips of his performance on Youtube. Blue Water dub Tien sounded okay. Ocean Tien had a good voice but sometimes awful delivery like in this scene:
