Gohan's Dragon Friend

Post by ulisa » Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:56 pm

A few times, namely in the movies and the Garlic Junior Saga, Gohan is shown with a dragon friend which the dub calls "Icarus." I believe he showed up in the second or third movie.

So...where does he go after the Garlic Junior Saga? He showed up in Gohan's dream in the Trunks Saga but aside from that I don't ever remember seeing him again. Anyone have any idea?

 It's more like Piccolo. Remember what happened when Piccolo tried to take Gohan away? Kuririn thought'd he'd eat him!

What really happened is that Gohan tried to stick something up where no half-Saiyan has gone before. It turns out that Icarus, when goosed, can fly faster than he did in Movie 5.

Isn't that Haiya Dragon in the Japanese version? I think.

Who knows where it went, he must have grown up and had a family, there was no need for it's presence in the later Z episodes.

Yes. "Higher Dragon" in the video/dvd dub of movie # 3.

As for what happened to him, as he was a filler character, they just decided not to show him anymore I think. Though at least in the dub there's a part when Goten has a lizard and says, "Look Gohan, he reminds me of Icarus."

I was pretty sure it was "Hire Dragon" as in "a dragon for hire".

That's about the idea for the original pun. However, "Higher" was used in the dubs. You can see it even in the sutitles.

I thought the dragon was a neat filler character. It is too bad they did away with him when they did. But, like someone else mentioned, Icarus grew up and Gohan probably had to say his final goodbye to him.

Higher Dragon, in the anime canon, he's introduced as a dinosaur friend of Gohan's in the first Garlic Jr. saga episode (Gohan apparently made him as a friend during the previous 10 month gap since the defeat of Frieza, contrary to movie 3's intro of him) and he basically played as a main character for the rest of that arc. First episode of the Trunks saga, he does reappear in a dream sequence of Gohan's shortly before Frieza resurfaces. He also makes one more appearance in the Driving School episode, giving Gohan a ride to see Goku and Piccolo's wacky race. His final appearance, of course, is in movie 5 where he does his own version of a Neo flight when taking Gohan to Korin's tower. My guess as to why he's never seen again, maybe Sauza's blast was fateful and he died a slow and painful death because he was confusing filler? I don't know if it matters, but Goten does mention him as being someone he and Gohan would play with during one of the World Tournament training episodes, though I think that was dub only.

Yes, Goten doesn't mention Haiya Dragon/Icarus in that episode, only in the dub.

So you're saying that Haiya Dragon was re-introduced in the Garlic Jr. saga as a brand new character, as if none of the others had ever met him? ...Why ignore his intro in movie 3?

Because movie 3 can't possibly fit into the rest of the story.

That's not too important. You can still pull characters out of time and into the series or the other way around.

Not without creating significant plotholes, which is why they retconned him in the series. SMALL errors happen. I won't argue that, but they're still just as annoying. Needless significant errors? Those must be dealt with.
