What's with the Oozaru roar in yells?
By the way I don't mean the Oozaru itself, I mean the little echo you hear like when Goku finishes off Boo, or when Gohan finished off Cell. It's very noticeable in the original version. I find it very intriguing, while also a little confused as to why that sound comes out of the saiyans. Does anyone else hear it in the show? Was there a reason to have this echo effect?

I guess it's just a device whereby the sound designer has tried to encode a paramusical message into the scenes, as to, presumably, sonically render primal Saiyan ancestry.dbzfan7 wrote:By the way I don't mean the Oozaru itself, I mean the little echo you hear like when Goku finishes off Boo, or when Gohan finished off Cell. Same reason it's used as a backdrop when Goku defeats Piccolo Daimao? It symbolizes their inner power.
I would also like to note that, like the backdrop, I don't think this is something that happens in-universe. It's just a fun little victory cry for us.

It happens once or twice in Kai, as well.
As the others have said, it's just a stylistic thing. (...of which I'm not very fond of.)

It also backs up the incredible scream when Gohan bursts into SS2.dbzfan7 wrote:or when Gohan finished off Cell.

It's a nice little touch I noticed after a couple years of watching the Japanese version.
The dub doesn't emulate this effect, because it was most likely part of the Japanese vocal track only, and not the M&E track.
As a result, except for a handful of scenes in the original Z dub, I never felt the same power or impact from the dub actors' screams, even though they were putting their all into it.
Kai's a little better, because the dub adds some nice reverb and echo effects,

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I'm not sure how Toei created those sounds during Dragon Ball Z, but here's what they did for Dragon Ball:Blade wrote:I guess it's just a device whereby the sound designer has tried to encode a paramusical message into the scenes, as to, presumably, sonically render primal Saiyan ancestry.dbzfan7 wrote:By the way I don't mean the Oozaru itself, I mean the little echo you hear like when Goku finishes off Boo, or when Gohan finished off Cell. Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

Good old Foley Art. I wonder how they got half the sfx they came up with.AnimeMaakuo wrote:I'm not sure how Toei created those sounds during Dragon Ball Z, but here's what they did for Dragon Ball:

They used a similar effect for the lion roars in The Lion King.DarkPrince_92 wrote:Good old Foley Art. I wonder how they got half the sfx they came up with.AnimeMaakuo wrote:I'm not sure how Toei created those sounds during Dragon Ball Z, but here's what they did for Dragon Ball:

I wonder how they did more of the digital sounding effects like Ki blasts, sci fi sfx, and Cell's footsteps. Haha.
I do mixing as a hobby, so I'd love to know the process.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I imagine that sound design is all purely FM synthesis.Attitudefan wrote: I wonder how they did more of the digital sounding effects like Ki blasts, sci fi sfx, and Cell's footsteps. Haha.

Re: What's with the Oozaru roar in yells?
A lot of sci fi laser sounds are done by striking cables and stuff, so DB energy shots might be something similar, though electronic frequency modulation noises are a possibility as well (especially for auras).
Re: What's with the Oozaru roar in yells?
It also appears while Goku powers up for SSJ3 (I think) and when Gohan releases his full potential.
Still wonder if everyone else hears it in the anime. I also wonder who's idea it was to include the Oozaru backdrop.

Re: What's with the Oozaru roar in yells?
I originally thought this topic asked why does Funimation dub over the Oozaru Roars with weird groaning noises... which I find a problem.

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.
