Petition for the rest of the Toonami dub post-RTD Edition

Post by clutchins » Wed Feb 18, 2015 4:15 pm

https://www.change.org/p/funimation-ent ... on-toonami

I made a petition for Funimation to release the rest of the Toonami broadcast dub of DBZ in a DVD set like Rock the Dragon. Although this dub saw a release on VHS in an incomplete format, it has never truly been fully released on any home video format, let alone DVD. A box set (or box sets, as it were) of this dub would include the episodes 54-276 of the edited version of the dub that aired on Cartoon Network, possibly even including the Bardock and Trunks specials and Lord Slug which all aired on both Toonami and Nicktoons with alternate scoring in various scenes. Full episodes would include openings, recaps, original narration, previews, and closings that were shown on Toonami. The same care that was given to the video for Rock the Dragon would also be given to the video here. The audio would obviously be dub only with no subtitles to maximize DVD storage space.

Although the picture here is 4:3, it would not compete with any 16:9 offerings because the picture is not uncut. This would be a self-contained product that would only "fit" with the Rock the Dragon set, maybe even marketed as a collector's item. I know a lot of people on here don't care for anything other than the Japanese version and would think is silly, but there is a generation of fans that grew up watching this dub after school on television everyday and it needs some DVD love. Many people don't even remember who Dale Kelly or Mark Britten or Ceyli Delgadillo is because they've been replaced in the redubbed Orange Bricks.

My call to Funimation is to finish what you started in 2013 with the brilliant Rock the Dragon Edtion set by giving the Toonami Generation what they grew up with.

Note: Even if you don't like the edited version or the dub in general, if this gets heard by them it might start the precedent that we as fans are able to make our voices heard for something. So sign anyway if you're a fan of Dragon Ball at all. This could lead to bigger things like Dragon Box licenses.

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.

I feel like that's too oddly specific for Funimation to get behind. That would be interesting to see, but I feel like the demand for that isn't there.

Well that's why I feel like we have to show them that the demand is there with this petition. It's a huge gap in their catalogue of DBZ releases that ought to be filled.

Count me out.

I'm really not a fan of this online petition stuff because 90% of time it's for shallow or vapid reasons.

From who though?! I feel like that's like you and 17 other people MAX to be honest. Not here to shoot you down, I just doubt this will ever actually happen all things considered. That's just way too specific of a release that a small number of people need.

...then again, not sure how they plan on re-releasing the series if they were to do it again.

How many episodes would be on each set? I suggest alternating between 44 and 45 episodes per set. 53 (Rock the Dragon Edition) + 45 + 44 + 45 + 44 + 45 = 276! :)

It adds up very nicely to 276 without weird disparities between episode counts per set, and would also probably result in cheaper overall MSRPs than the original Rock the Dragon set. I'd definitely be into these, I just wish online petitions were more effective in general.

I'm not sure just how effective my petition will be, but I want to try anyway. With enough backing from this site I think something could happen.

If it were separated into multiple sets, I thought it might go something like this:
Freeza & Garlic Jr Set
54-102 (49 total) + Bardock Special (Toonami Version)

Android & Cell Set
103-179 (77 total) + Trunks Special (Toonami Version)

Majin Buu Set
180-276 (97 total) + Lord Slug (Toonami Version)

It's the only logical way of organizing them, although I realize how absurd it would be to pack something like 15 discs in the Majin Buu set. Also I know Lord Slug is closer on the timeline to Namek than Buu, but I couldn't justify including it in the first set since the Bardock special would be a better choice.

The Majin Buu set would end up retailing for $199.99!

I also swore there more edited/alternate versions of movies that never made it to DVD, but I could be wrong.

People going "Please sign this petition stating your interest in a product even if you don't give a flying fuck about the product and would never spend a penny on it" is precisely why this type of "please make this product, look, there's interest" petitions just get laughed away by companies.

People want to see DBZ edited? I'm sorry but what year is this?! This will never work! Fans don't want to see DBZ edited and has been that like for over a decade. Even fans hated watching DBZ edited on Nick Toons and CW.

I signed it and there is nothing wrong with someone wishing for their dreams to be honest. We never know what happens in the game of life because the RTD sets proved that even though we weren't expecting that.

Even fans back in the day would watch DBZ uncut. People bought edited on VHS would be because they don't like seeing blood, or they had strict parents or they were cheaper to buy. You can sign it all you want but I don't think it will happen. With the Rock the Dragon set, there's more nostalgia value to that set.

Yeah, sorry. After seeing fans cry out for uncut content over the years, I find this whole thing quite funny.

Censor the show! Give us those shitty business practices back in full form! Muh nostalgia!

The only type of product I see this type of idea working with is with the Westwood episodes that never had a home release. There's many Canadian and British fans who would quite like to own that mess of a production. There's marketability there and untouched nostalgia to cash in on.

I appreciate your efforts but after seeing how much effect the hugely popular Dragon Box petitions have had, this isn't going to go anywhere.

But hey, I could be entirely wrong. Rock the Dragon came out of nowhere! Again, that cast has a huge untouched fanbase so it wasn't too surprising.

I really don't know why people still like the censored edited version of DBZ when we have uncut Z AND uncut Kai. Ocean dub release was for the niche part of the fanbase (Ocean fans) and even that didn't do -that- great.

A re-release of 200 episodes of the dub that have been pretty much uncut for over 7 years now but had them censored and cut down? Sounds like a really bad move to me.

I can't see this release ever happening...the same dub is already available on the Orange Bricks, the only difference is a few redubbed lines and cast changes, that's not enough of an incentive for people to buy, who would want to pay the same price or higher for an inferior product? Stuff was redubbed and cast members were replaced for a reason. I'd be much more interested in a release of the Westwood dub if FUNi ever somehow get the rights to that, not another re-release/repackaging of FUNi's 1999-2006(?) Dragon Ball Z in-house dub. I'd really only be interested in a complete set containing all nine Z seasons as they were aired in English from 1996 to 2003 (Ocean for the first two seasons then FUNi for everything else) with behind the scenes footnotes, but that would probably cost an astronomical amount.

If you want to get technical, the Orange Brick dub and the "original dub" from 1999-2003 are two separate entities. There are dialogue changes, redubs for consistency, the obvious name changes like the H word - the point is that there are too many differences to just label it as the same thing. And that's the whole point here, to make it all available for the completion's sake.

Also this "nine seasons" talk is very misleading if we're talking about the Toonami seasoning. I know Funimation wanted to call their Orange Bricks something consistent if not accurate, but the real TV Broadcast seasons were as follows:

Season 1: Saiyan Saga (1-26)
Season 2: Namek Saga (27-53)
Season 3: Ginyu/Freeza Sagas (54-92)
Garlic Jr aired on Toonami Rising Sun and is not considered part of any "season" (93-102)
Season 4: Androids/Cell Sagas (103-179)
Season 5: Great Saiyaman/Early Buu Saga (180-222)
Season 6: Majin Buu/Fusion Sagas (223-261)
"End of DBZ": Kid Buu Saga (262-276)

It's convoluted, but to the best of my knowledge and research these were the blocks. And yeah I would love more than anything a classic DBZ release like the one I've petitioned for with extra features like a tell-all about the making of the dub in the early days.

I'm sure in ten years' time we'll have kids petitioning for the "Toonzai broadcast edition".

I think he meant "get the TV broadcast recordings", which are floating around on unmentionable websites.

I know that, but optimally you would want VHS recordings from people that you could rip yourself. Or FUNi could just monetize what they have...
