DBZ Anime Guide Book

Post by Nyogo » Fri Mar 12, 2004 8:49 am

Does anybody know where that Japanese site is that's got information and pictures on that new DBZ Anime Guide Book? I went there a long time ago, but I forgot how I got there.

Am I asking too many questions?

High-lighting the one-star ball on that page, it says "Son G o k o u in Z." Doesn't that completely alter the pronounciation of Goku? Wouldn't the Japanese know this more than anybody? :?

Yes, and no. Where'd you think the G o k o u spelling started in the first place? It was the Japanese Bandai games (I believe).

"G o k o u" is written in the Roman alphabet. And the Japanese know as much about writing in that as I do about writing my own name in Kanji.

Okay, that's not quite true. They're obviously a lot better at it than Roman alphabet users are at using their lettering systems. But they're certainly not fluent.

(And this has created the problem where "Uber-Kewl Otuka fanboys" think that "G o k o u" really is the official, correct, written in Toriyama's blood spelling of the name. Whereas Toriyama himself spelt it both "Goku" and "Gokuu", I think. But they want to spell it "G o k o u", because it's DIFFERENT FROM FUNIMATION AND IT'S STICKING IT TO THEM! Eh, MikeyEX-boy?)

It's just that with the transliteration, that makes the pronounciation "Goko" does it not? In order to have "G o k o u" sound like "Goku" is if a French person reads it.

I would pronouce it as "Go-cow", as someone encoraging their bovine animal to get a move on.

But yeah, it's wrong. They're not experts though, and because Bandai did it, lots of people do it. No idea why Bandai did it in the first place though.

Not really. If you were reading that as french then "G o k o u" would sound as if "Goku" was cut off halfway into the u. That's why the french translated Goku as, well, Goku. (Well technically as "Sangoku" cuz they're twits, but the goku part is the same!)

Well couldn't it be G o k o u in the same sense that Mary Lou is pronounced the same way as Marilu? I have girlfriends that have both spellings of the name.

I'm assuming that SuperMike's Correcting Power's of Gooness have got to your post here, and you originally types "G O K O U". (It's certainly created random strangeness over the rest of this thread)

So...

Yes, in the same way that "Jason" can be spelt "Jaason", or "Jaisen", or "Jaycen". It is pronounced the same way, but any spelling apart from the first is quite clearly stupid beyond reason. Altering the spelling of a known name does not make you cooky, interesting or "with-it". It makes you a twat.

*ahem*

But, to go back to the point, y you could argue that it's spelt "G o k o u" and pronounced "Goku". You could argue that it's spelt "Gohcuu" or "Goaohckuah" and is pronounced "Goku". But it's not. Toriyama spelt it "Goku" (and maybe occasionally "Gokuu"), the Japanese spelling transliterates out to "Goku". FUNI spell it "Goku". VIZ spell it "Goku". Everyone who isn't trying to make some sort of silly "I am uber-kewl otaku" point spells it "Goku".

And most importantly of all...Mr VegettoEX spells it "Goku". Do not anger him.

(Also, you've had girlfriends called both "Mary Lou" and "Marilu"? You either have a very specific fetish, or you are living in "Generic Deep South Female Name Town".)

Correction, it was have girlfriends. So it's Generic Deep South Female Name Town, at the corner of Two Freaking Girls Road and At The Same Time Avenue. Or, maybe the great PsyLiam can make it a lot more clever than that. I hate you.

That's just the anime. Though #8 was translated as "Franky 8"...

I believe at least in Toei's version of the anime, it was spelled "Gokuh".
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

I can't remember Toei ever using "Gokuh". Didn't they in the driving episode of DBZ spell the name "Gokuu"? It was on the baseball cap Piccolo was wearing.

I don't think the anime ever used "Gokuh", but the manga certainly did.
