Which form of DBZ fights do you prefer?

Post by Vegitofaxx » Sat Mar 28, 2015 3:06 pm

I've wanted to ask people about this, and couldn't find a thread for it.

What do you prefer? The long slowmotion punches like:
Or quickpaced punches and kicks like:
So: Detailed punches and kicks that take several seconds vs quick barrages of punches and kicks that take a few seconds?

I really like when there is a nice balance of both fast and slow. The Vegeta fight is a good example of that I guess. Sometimes when It's just all teleporting and fast paced, you really don't see anything. I think the Majin Vegeta fight with Goku was kind of like that..

The quick paced fights are the best
It's a shame more fight scenes in BOG weren't like that :problem:

edit:
Dodging at super speed is also the coolest parts of DBZ

I prefer choreography that I can see.

There's quite a difference between the Goku vs Beerus clip you posted and the other quick speed punches. The other ones are just the same frames being repeated over and over again, with no detail put into it. The HERO scene in Battle of Gods was extremely fast-paced, yes, but it was a lot less lazy and a lot more detail was put into it. If I had to choose, more of those scenes would be excellent as that particular moment was one of the best action scenes Dragon Ball has ever had, in my opinion of course.

I agree on the first one. Love the fast paced part of the fight, ending with that awesome Kamehameha!

I think the Kaioken X3 punch was dragged out a little to much. But Goku vs Vegeta is still the best fight in the series.

Yes. I just wanted to show the difference between the fast movements and the slowmotion ones. But yeah, that was a badass moment.

The speed picture could also have been this:

I typically like a nice balance but really a lot of the fights don't feel that unique most of the time in the Z era. Everyone pretty much fights the same (except Beerus), shoots mostly the same lasers and it really lacks the variety its successors have brought in.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Also, it's shouldn't just be energy blasts, would like some actual martial arts too. Fucking Majin Vegeta fight...

Well the epitome of a perfectly paced choreographed fight would be Goku vs Vegeta.

The epitome of a fight where it was nothing more than blurry motions of punches and kicks would be... well... any fight in GT honestly. But the battle against Super #17 and Baby Vegeta were especially bad cases of this.

I actually hate the dodging in most battles. It's boring IMO, it's like nothing is happening. I prefer when the fighters actually hit each other and when every impact looks important.

the animation looks very good but it just makes them look so slow

I think the best is (using goku and vegeta as the fighters): 1. Goku punches after vegeta. 2. Vegeta dodges and delivers a punch that hits.
(BTW, i love when punches connect like this)

That's when dodging works, IMO

I understand that, but I like it because I can actually follow the battle and the moves and decisions that the fighters make. When it's a flurry of high speed attacks, there's just nothing to follow and we just wait for one of the fighters to randomly get hit and fly into a mountain or wall of rocks in a totally arbitrary way.

A balance of both is good. Generally as a rule it has to be easy on the eyes for me at least. The one example with Beerus in the OP with its massive shaking effect coupled with them zapping around from foreground to background so fast makes it very unenjoyable to watch. I can hardly figure out what exactly they're doing except, well, just budging each other all the time. The bad auras also don't help.

The fight Son Goku vs. Cell is far better. They teleport around all the time but it's easy to follow.
BT3 off meds | The final fight

Ah, the Alpha and the Omega. As all life was created from Chaos...so shall it be DESTROYED!!!

The wails of machines | Singing cold harmony | Shifting air upward | Entranced by the breeze | Light pours like blood | Into a cosmic sea | Of stars crystallized | In a frozen symphony

Vegetto kicking you into orbit theme

Yup, that's the third best fight in the entire series, IMO. And who doesn't like the Instant Transmission Kamehameha?

I like a mix. I like the high speed action, but I also like being shown things slower too. I prefer the high speed stuff, but we need some slower moments to savour a devastating blow. Like a gut punch of face shot. Super God Punch from Xenoverse does a great job slowing things down for a second, just to savour the impact of that hard punch.

Another vote for "combination of both" here: fast-paced when they're trading a bunch of lesser blows in rapid succession or one fighter is attacking and the other's rapidly dodging or blocking, with slower "slow-motion impact" type hits for when one of the two lands a major blow to the other. With more slow-things-down-to-show-the-impact moments when the two fighters are closer to equals, of course.

Showing actual martial-arts type moves and acrobatic-type stuff rather than the more generic "punch punch punch move-so-fast-it-looks-like-teleportation punch punch kick" is always nice, too (the slowed moments are good times to fit this sort of thing in.)
