Extent of the censorship in the Westwood/Blue Water dubs?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Extent of the censorship in the Westwood/Blue Water dubs?

Post by Kakacarrottop » Wed May 20, 2015 4:26 pm

As many know the "Ocean" dub of the first 53 DBZ episodes was extremely censored, with everything from thought bubbles to tears getting edited out. What about the later dubs done by Ocean/Blue Water? I know references to death were usually censored in the Westwood dub, but did they cut overly violent scenes? If they did could someone give me some examples of scenes cut out? And did they ever use digital paint like in the Saban/BLT dub? (eg using it to cover up blood).

I haven't heard much about the censorship situation with the Blue Water dub, but apparently they gave Goku a pair of digital underwear in the first DB episode and called Hell "Hades", so some censoring must have been going on there.

There was indeed censorship present in the Westwood and Blue Water dubs, however the extent tended to vary from minimal to more drastic edits. Some scenes were completely edited out, others left untouched or censored to an extent. I decided to update and upload a picture to further support this. In additional dialogue sometimes reflected these edits. Also, unfortunately and coincidentally Toonami UK tended to make stupid further edits as opposed to YTV here in Canada which aired the show as it was originally created.
If you have any Canadian dubbed recorded material and would like to preserve it, please PM me!

The Westwood dub footage was basically Funimation's already edited footage given extra cuts here and there. Reference to death was removed until around the Fusion saga where they finally became less strict. Up until that point they'd always use "hurt" or "gone" instead of "kill" or "dead". This caused some confusion for me as a kid, because when they revived all of Cell's victims they said "Please heal all those hurt by Cell" which lead me to believe that Trunks hadn't actually died from Cell's blast at all but was merely wounded.

The footage edits weren't done digitally but were just cuts plain and simple. For example the scene were Super Buu jumps down the gunman's throat and kills him was left in the edited Funimation dub, while in the Westwood dub it just showed Buu jumping towards his mouth and then cut to Buu reforming afterwards. What's confusing about this is that the edited Funimation dub of the Fusion saga aired on CNX in the UK before the Westwood version aired later down the line and yet they had no problem showing Funimation's dub completely unaltered, but when they came to show the Westwood dub it had the extra cuts. So this raises the question as to why the extra cuts were needed at all.

On top of cutting violent scenes the Westwood dub also removed random bits and pieces. For example, several portions of Vegeta's fight with Kid Buu were removed, even the parts with no blood. And they removed random parts were it showed the landscape and stuff during Super Buu's transformation to Kid Buu.

Then you have the Blue Water dubs of DB and GT which are a different story altogether. They used the French footage and aired on Toonami UK with seriously violent scenes left in like Vegeta getting his shoulder impaled, and Goku's horrific beatdown by Piccolo with all the blood and even the stomping left in. Toonami UK even aired the Big Green movies fully uncut in the middle of the day.

You say that as if a fish being attracted to panties as bait is perfectly normal.

Also: Some of those Funimation changes like making Bulma's panties all pink, and changing the bow on the ones Oolong wished for into a tiny dragon...I...what? Why?

I never said that panties as bait was normal. I just said that money as bait is fucking ridiculous.

Maybe they wanted to make them look like "Shenron Underwear TM" so the fact that they're a girl's panties.
Didn't he wish for "The world's most comfortable underwear" in that version?
