The Danish Dub

As some of you know, I'm Danish. And we Danish people did get a dub that spanned the first 108 episodes, as far as i remember. The dub's names wese heavily based on the Danish version of the manga, going as far as the narrator calling the series "Dragon Ball" even though the "Z" was right on the screen.

The Cast was:

As far as I know, it was the first 105 episodes, not 105, that got dubbed. Plus movies 1-9, and the two tv specials.

The movies are sadly based on the big green dub so the dub's far from the dub quality the TV show had.

A lot of European dubs are based on the pre-edited French dub, both in terms of visual/audio edits and in terms of scripts, but even though I don't know a word of Danish, I clearly heard Goku call himself "Goku the Super Saiyajin" in that clip, which is not what the French dub said.

So, do you think Denmark got their dubbing materials directly from Japan?

Denmark used a mix of the french dub, and the danish manga.

The German dub had a similar situation, in that they got the French dub but took a lot of liberties with the French dub scripts, often using the German manga translations as a reference. The last line of Goku's "I Am" speech in the French dub was, "By the power of Kaio, transform!"



Not really sure what that was about, but a lot of the dubs that got the French dub used that line...the German dub, thankfully, had "I am the legendary Super Saiyajin!"

However, the consensus on the quality of the German manga translation seems to be inconsistent...I've heard some people say it's good, I've heard some people say it's bad. Hopefully the Danish translation was good at least.

As far as I'm concerned, the Danish translation is pretty good. It sounds more natural in Danish than Viz' sounds in English (if that makes sense). It actually seems to be based on the German version.

I'm puzzled, because I assume (based on the comments about the script) that the licensing was done through AB Groupe. Smaller networks with probably less budget (comparatively) licensed the whole series through the same company, at a time when international negotiations were harder to make.

Well, the main part for DR was the expenses that they had to pay, but at the time when they were asked, they had not licenced new wpisodes since 2005, so that was probably what made it difficult and time-consuming for them to license new ones.
