So what is the deal between Tien and Chiaotzu?

Maybe I'm forgetting something, but was there ever any detailed backstory of the two? I know they're both crane school students. But that's... it.

What exactly is Chiaotzu? Is he even human? How old is he? Why is Tien--who's pretty much reclusive--so overprotective of him?! By the end of the series, the little mime-looking dude should be old enough to take care of himself, but he still looks and sounds like a child.

This relationship reminds me a lot of Kaiba and Mokuba from Yu-Gi-Oh! But that one actually makes sense to me.

Yes, Toriyama is really bad at providing background stories for the characters within the story. Hopefully with the new anime, there should be more time for that.

In any case I can't recall if Chaozu is listed under the monster type Earthlings like Pilaf in the guidebooks, but it's a good place to start looking.
It could be anything that has made Tenshinhan so overprotective of Chaozu, maybe it is like the Kaiba and Mokuba situation, where they were orphans before being taken in by some mysterious benefactor(in this case it'd be Tsuru-sennin/Tao Pai Pai).

Yes, all the random animal-type earthlings disappear from Dragon Ball, when the story got a little bit more serious after Piccolo. You'd think they'd return in the Buu Arc, along with the more comedic story-telling, but they don't. I think the anime might still have featured random animal type Earthlings after the Freeza arc, but I don't recall anyone in the manga.

I knew someone would point out Yamcha and Puar. That relationship is very different. First of all, Puar keeps Yamcha in check, so they're in the same level in the sense that neither is like a father/mother or sibling figure to the other; they're just friends, similarly to how Yamcha is with the rest of Z cast, only he's known Puar for longer. Secondly, neither are reclusive (post-bandit life) or only cling around the other; they hang out with the others all the time. Third, Puar is a cat...

Tien would give up his life in a heartbeat for Chiaotzu. He worries about him so much, he'd abandon the others to protect him. He actually has abandoned the others to live a quiet life with only Chiaotzu. Hell, he even gave up a relationship with Launch to live this reclusive lifestyle. The most perplexing thing, again, is Chiaotzu's classification. He's human, yet he never ages or grows. Just perpetually a child.

Still wish we got a backstory. Hell, I wish we had little backstory one-shots for all the human characters. That would be fun as long as it's consistent with how they're portrayed.

You know I never even twigged that Chiaotzu may be a monster type earthling, but that theory sounds solid to me now...

Does this mean Chiaotzu is the strongest monster type earthling?
