Editing subtitles for English Dragon Boxes

Hey everyone. I am wanting to edit the font of the subtitles for my English Dragon Boxes because it looks very pixelated and ugly.



Compare that to this subtitles on my DB Dragon Boxes:


I ripped the DBZ Dragon Box files using MakeMKV. When ripped, the subtitles were ripped as Vobsubs. Aegisub won't open Vobsub files, so I am unable to use Aegisub to edit the subtitles at all. To be able to edit the subs, I will probably have to extract the sub files, convert them, edit them in Aegisub, then mux them back in. Doing this for 291 episodes would take forever so I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do it. Is there another program that will allow me to edit the subs? Is there an easier way to editing the font of the subs? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, not really. They're image subs, so you can't really do much without converting them to an editable format. Even then, you lose out on the formatting from the original image - for example, text intended to be at the top of the screen will just be on top of the subs at the bottom.

You can use a program called SubExtractor to reliably OCR the Dragon Box subs into Aegisub format. This will also keep the positioning. Here's an example of the results I had:



Unfortunately, like you said, converting the subs one at a time may take a while. The easiest thing to do would be to write a batch file to extract the .sub/.idx files from your MKVs, so at the very least you don't have to do it manually each time. Then another batch file to remux once you've got the .ass files.

It already looks much better without changing anything. I like that font that you are using. Do you know which font it is by chance?

The font is Avenir Black, the same font Funimation uses for their Blu-rays and streaming services. Here's a cap of the settings I use for SE:

If I wanted to edit the style in Aegisub for an .ass sub file, what would the settings be to closely mimic Funimation's Blu-ray .pgs subs?

I use a slightly-darker-than-pure-white for my subs, hence the EBEBEB color. For full-on white, you'd want FFFFFF. Using these settings, it's about as close as I've been able to get to Funi's genuine BD/streaming subs. Comparison below:

Funi's subs have a slightly different kerning & anti-aliasing, but I'm not familiar enough with Aegisub to mimic them any more closely. You may be able to tweak the settings more to your liking.

Is there a way to open that that screencap in Photoshop or another similar program and have it tell you the color number? And also how would I edit the style string? I've just been using Aegisub for styling so that's new to me.

If you use the eyedropper and then examine the color, it will tell you the RGB values of the color. Convert that to hexadecimal to get the color you'd put in the style string. For example, the EBEBEB color I use corresponds to an RGB set of 235,235,235.

As for the styling, the definition for each value in the string is shown in the heading just above it in the .ass file, so you can tell what each one corresponds to:

There's also a rather decent front end for editing .ass files rather than editing the text of the .ass directly.

EDIT: Looks like I misunderstood your question... you're already using Aegisub and want to mimic the same style. In which case, open style editor and make your settings like so:

Pardon the double post, but it looks like I goofed up. Upon further examination, it seems Funi's font is Avenir Heavy, not Avenir Black.

I think they use Heavy on Blu-rays and Black on streams.
