Is there a chance the Legacy of Goku games may return?

Post by Doctor. » Thu Jul 09, 2015 5:00 pm

However small it may be. Can they return in the form of adapting Super arcs? Does the company who made the trilogy still produce games? Did they go bankrupt?

The Legacy of Goku games were all funded by Atari, who is no longer involved with Dragon Ball.

The games themselves were developed by Webfoot, a US-based developer whose most recent release is the poorly received Legend of Korra on 3DS. Bandai Namco (the company that now handles DB games in all regions) almost never has western developers make games based on Japanese IPs. It's important to mention that the LoG games were 10 years ago. It's hard to imagine everyone behind those games are still there.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Even though they were really enjoyable, I don't think we'll see any more of them. I would really like to see some kind of Dragon Ball RPG game in the future, though! They really blended together well.

It would be nice, but I highly doubt it. I think Namco Bandai wants to avoid any DB game titles that they had no involvement with.

I'd rather see another Transformation.

There was supposed to be another one, but it was cancelled... Transformation was actually a pretty good game, considering the fact that it was based around GT and was American-made.

Why exactly was it cancelled?

I think it was pretty boring game, the designs were ugly (Done by the same designer who did the ugly icons in Legacy of Goku II)... Also, I think that it was done hastily.
Because I remember, after the success of the LOG series, there were rumours about fourth game, based on GT. When Transformation was named, everyone asumed that that's it.
I remember lot of fans being pissed off after the release not actually being what they expected and those who played it weren't impressed. It was just dumb platform beat-em up game and pretty short one with.

It's funny, that you can compare it to Advanced Adventure, done by Japanese which has nice designs, is enjoyable, gameplay is smooth, has interesting level desings and replayability for it's rich content.
And you can see what exactly is wrong with Transformation. The cancelment I think was because of sales.

Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

Transformation 2 most likely didn't sell well enough. The first game got mixed reviews and most fans didn't like it. The game can be finished at least two hours and it's not fun if you beat the whole game in one sit down in my opinion. GT is such a short show, they could have done all 4 story arcs in GT into one game. The second game was set to come out late 2005 then early 2006 and finally cancelled.

I'm sure it was due to it selling poorly.

Also important to keep in mind that the DS hit in 2004. So if Transformation didn't sell well, they probably weren't feeling comfortable developing a game for a close to death console.

It seems like when Webfoot does a DB game that is not Legacy of Goku then it's crap. Taiketsu was awful and Transformation was pretty bad. They should have made Legacy of Goku 4 on the DS in 2005 and cover all 4 story arcs of GT. Also with the Super 17 saga, they could reuse old sprites from LOG1-3 of old villains like Cell, Freeza, Nappa, King Cold, Dr. Gero, #17 and other villains.

A small chance maybe but most likely they'll go with a new idea. Some of the Gameboy/GBA/DS games were fantastic and absolutely deserve a reboot. Such as DBZ LSW or even the older NES RPGs!

The first Legacy of Goku was pretty terrible. WebFoot did a good job with the sequels, but the other games they pushed out were horrible. Transformations wasn't that bad on my first playthrough, but having to replay it either for to unlock something or just to play it in general, was impossible for me. It was not a good game, just one long, boring chore.

The first Legacy of Goku did suck. I think that game was a test in the waters on how they can make a DBZ game. I did wish Atari ask Webfoot to make a LOG remake on the DS before they lost the rights in 2008. A remake of LOG1 with gameplay of LOG2-3 would have been great.
