No duel mode in Shin Budokai

Post by Demi » Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:09 pm

That's right, rumour on gamespot is that Shin Budokai won't have a duel mode. Meaning you will never be able to select who you want to fight, you can only fight whoever is next in story mode and ect. This has really pissed me off. What if i want to play as Vegeta and fight Pikkon? I can't. Unless i get first get to him in arcade mode by beating whoever is before him. This fucking sucks.

Edit - Shit, sorry VegettoEX. Move this to video games please.

This is sad really. I don't think this game even got item capsules.
Looks more like a mini budokai than a full budokai one.

We have to look at the right direction. How good was the sidestep in this game. Paikunhan appearance..

But.. it is just tiresome to see one DBZ game after another coming in such deplorable form. It is really a miracle budokai 3 was good enogh.

The lack-of-duelling has turned me off from this game unless I have a chance to play it at EB or something and it changes my mind.

This is just a rumour at the moment though, right? No sane developer would leave that mode out, it's vital to this sort of game.

There is a training mode, at least. That helps a little. I might be able to go without Duel Mode if the Training Mode allows you to choose whichever characters you want to pit up against each other.

http://psp.ign.com/articles/693/693194p1.html is where I got the info from. They don't mention a duel mode in the description of what all the game entails.

Seriously, how can you have a fighting game without a Dueling option?

What the hell are these guys smoking?

Apparantely, there are no alternate costumes either.

What the hell?

How can they get rid of the entire purpose behind a fighting game: To challenge other people? And to think I was under the impression that this game was going to sport the ability to challenge opponents online... Seriously... The thought of a one player fighting game is a really worthless idea. Even when the genre first entered the scene in arcades there were two controls available. I don't see this game selling if there's only a story/ tournament mode.
So zetta slow

I tried to find out whether there was a duel mode but no one mentions it for sure so I don't know about that but they do mention that you can verse opponents online so that's for sure.

Well, someone on the Gamefaqs board mentioned that you CAN use the Practice mode as a Duel mode. Choose both fighters, the stage, and change some settings so that both your health bars can drain.

Now that I think about it though, I don't believe Duel mode, in the sense that you can go a single match and choose your AI opponent, is very common in fighting games.

Games like Tekken, Dead or Alive, Street Fighter, Soul Blade, and Mortal Kombat, don't have a Duel mode like that (at least not the ones I've played).

It has a Wi-Fi Ad-Hoc option for two player fights.

Hate to break it to you guys, but many fighting games don't have a "VS CPU" option, just standard story/arcade/survival/etc modes for single player. In my opinion, it's hardly vital. Hell, I hardly ever used Duel Mode against a cpu in B3. And in my opinion, no capsules is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.

No capsules means no unlockable characters, no obtainable moves for characters, and no unlockable power ups. As well as the items that help with the fight.

So please do explain why no capsules is a "good thing."

You can most certainly still have unlockable characters without the silly capsule system. And the move and item capsules were insanely unbalanced. With the use of capsules, characters gained unbearably overpowered abilities such as "Cooler's Spaceship" (being able to come back from death with upgraded abilities and full health) or "Babidi's Mind Control" (Majin Vegeta was broken beyond words), and the checks on these capsules didn't always necessarily balance out the advantages. Playing Budokai games without capsules, however, was terribly dull. Characters were given very minimalist movelists that weren't exciting to play and fairly generic. I would much prefer a system where each character had a set movelist that was balanced, yet varied enough to be fun. I love B3 to death, but the capsule system has to be my biggest beef with the game.

As for the idea of customizing practice mode to act as a duel mode, I can live with that.

Also, the more I think about it, the more I realize how rare the VS CPU option really is. I'm starting to put this game back in perspective again.

Now I just need the money for a PSP and the game.

You can indeed unlock characters and new forms, without the presence of capsules. There's also a shop where you can unlock other items, but I haven't explored that option yet. Having too much fun playing. :)

No capsules means the game does not have any custom characters.

And duel mode is really good. I already spend nights battling the cpu while imagining "who will take over" stories. It wouldn't be possible if I couldn't change the costumes or the capsules of course.

People complain about how the characters of DBZ are all the same in strenght and moves, and then suddenly complain about how capsules are not good.

It is pretty stupid to have three special attacks for everyone, always. If I want to play with Goku just before he learned Genkidama, I just do it. It is not fun to "do not use this skill but still have it".

Dragonball is not supose to be a Street Fighter 2. Just change the game!

This game is not for you, then. It's based around movie 12. All the rest of the games are for you, though.

Indeedio. This also reminds me of when everyone was complaining about lack of in-game transformations for Sparking.

Budokai is actually one of the only fighting game series to have transformations. And I think you were all spoiled, and forgetting that it's not exactly a common thing for fighting games in general, then complaining about Sparking. :P

One of the only other fighting games I can think of with transformations is Bloody Roar.

I wasn't a ranter from having heard about no in-game transformations in Sparking but felt annoyed as I saw that as a step down. It was like going back in time (devolved in my eyes so to speak). But it's still my favorite DBZ game.

Oh the reason it was an uncommon thing to have transformations in fighting games is because there were not many titles that even had characters who had the ability transformation
