Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
Are they 4:3? Are they uncut? Are the dub mistakes corrected? Is it worth only having 26 episodes a "season"? Which voice actor changes (in the english dub) are good, and which ones are bad?

Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
- They're 4:3.
- They're uncut in that Funimation has not censored anything, but the censorship originally done by Toei is still present.
- I don't think it's likely that Funimation will do any other Kai releases with more than 26 episodes per set, so...yes, it's worth it?
Different people have different opinions on the recasts, so I'll just say that in my opinion Chris Ayres as Freeza stands out as one of the best ones, and I don't really dislike any of them.

Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
Do you want a well-acted, faithful dub of DBZ on par with the Japanese version? Get Kai.
Do you want "all action, no filler?" Get Kai.
Do you want a huge number of episodes per set? Get Kai.
Do you want the series in 4:3 and with an HD remaster? Get Kai.
Do you want to hear the Japanese DBZ cast and music in newly updated stereo sound? Get Kai.
Right Stuf and Amazon are both selling Kai sets for a good deal.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
If you have the cash hunt for an BUY IT IN PARTS. The Yamamoto score is fantastic.
Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
And then extract the music from the Japanese versions of episodes 53-95, to paste over the replacement score on the FUNi dubs.ShaneisMC wrote:If you have the cash hunt for an BUY IT IN PARTS. The Yamamoto score is fantastic.

This. Go on ebay wait for someone to sell the whole set and buy it in one shot. Bought mine in like new condition for 150 just for the Yamamoto score.ShaneisMC wrote:If you have the cash hunt for an BUY IT IN PARTS. The Yamamoto score is fantastic.
Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
While we're on the topic of how to buy it, don't stress too much if you can't get the Blu-rays. Most episodes (exceptions being some Ginyu and Freeza episodes) are kinda blurry so the difference isn't that super huge anyway. I mean there's still a difference but it's not like night and day.

It also might be worth mentioning that the score is different depending on which country's seasons you get; The US FUNimation 'Season' sets use the replacement Kikuchi score for all episodes, whereas the UK Manga Entertainment Seasons switch between the Kikuchi and Yamamoto scores depending on the disc.

Whoa, how did this happen?LostTimeLord wrote:It also might be worth mentioning that the score is different depending on which country's seasons you get; The US FUNimation 'Season' sets use the replacement Kikuchi score for all episodes, whereas the UK Manga Entertainment Seasons switch between the Kikuchi and Yamamoto scores depending on the disc.
At least it confirms something I already knew: Toei didn't destroy the Yamamoto BGM tracks for episodes 1-98.
Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
Didnt Toei recall all the home releases with the yamamoto score and replace it with the kikuchi score? Is the kikuchi score good? Will funimation have their own new composer for the buu saga of Kai? WHERE IS BRUCE FALCOUNER?ShaneisMC wrote:f you have the cash hunt for an BUY IT IN PARTS. The Yamamoto score is fantastic.

Bruce isn't ever coming back, replacement scores are a thing of the past. Becuase of the music scandal FUNi stopped printings Part 1-4, hence why they are selling for a lot of money now. The Kikuchi score itself is good however the replacement was sloppily done and too repetitive in parts. The reprinted Seasons sets and Part 5-8 have this replacement score. As for the Buu saga TOEI hired another composer in Sumitomo(sp) however that score wasn't very well received.Gian2408 wrote:Didnt Toei recall all the home releases with the yamamoto score and replace it with the kikuchi score? Yes. Toei did indeed do that following the plagiarism scandal.Didnt Toei recall all the home releases with the yamamoto score and replace it with the kikuchi score?
The score is indeed excellent. But the placement of the tracks and overall use of the score leaves a lot to be desired in Kai.Is the kikuchi score good?
No. That would beyond redundant. Will funimation have their own new composer for the buu saga of Kai?
Why should this matter? The less of Falcouner, the better in my opinion.WHERE IS BRUCE FALCOUNER?

Spoiler:
Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
I first watched dragon ball z with Bruce Falconer's music, and i prefer it to Sumitomo, but that's probably because i've heard more of it and i'm a bit biased. Bruce's Goku SSJ3 theme was the best dragon ball score ever in my opinion.Lord Beerus wrote:Why should this matter? The less of Falcouner, the better in my opinion.

You can find 3rd party sellers with used copies in great condition on ebay and or amazon. Sometimes they cost quite a bit though but if youre patient you can find someone selling the whole lot of 8 parts for under $200 which is honestly a great price.Gian2408 wrote:Didnt Toei recall all the home releases with the yamamoto score and replace it with the kikuchi score? Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
FUNimation's dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai was promoted as a "completely re-written... true to the manga" experience. Hell, the back covers of their Kai "Parts" releases listed "featuring the original Japanese score" in bullet points.Gian2408 wrote:I first watched dragon ball z with Bruce Falconer's music, and i prefer it to Sumitomo, but that's probably because i've heard more of it and i'm a bit biased. FUNimation has distanced themselves from Bruce Faulconer as much as possible. Replacing the score with the Faulconer Productions' score would've been completely counter-intuitive to the company's current method of dubbing and releasing anime. It would've made a certain portion of the fanbase happy, perhaps; but it would've also completely gone against what their current consumer base expects from the company nowadays.
We will never see an American-produced replacement score in a Dragon Ball product released by FUNimation ever again. The most we'll get are Engrish/English versions of songs produced by the Japanese studios, but not from FUNimation.*

Re: Dragon Ball Kai Season Sets
Correction: apparently the UK Season One actually uses Yamamoto throughout... I'd keep track of the UK Seasons thread you're interested in the Yamamoto score: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... 40#p968884LostTimeLord wrote:It also might be worth mentioning that the score is different depending on which country's seasons you get; The US FUNimation 'Season' sets use the replacement Kikuchi score for all episodes, whereas the UK Manga Entertainment Seasons switch between the Kikuchi and Yamamoto scores depending on the disc.
