Lego Dragonball Video Game

Post by Lunatic Fringe » Wed Aug 05, 2015 10:40 pm

To perhaps the disappointment, but most likely the elation of those of you that read the title( :D ), no, there's not going to be a Dragon Ball video game based on Legos. But then I said to myself, why not? I think the most successful Lego video game installments are those that exploit a recognizable and massive environment and when it comes to Dragon Ball, it doesn't get any better than that. The Stars Wars Lego game and the Lego Marvel Superheroes games are among my favorites, even though they both tone down the gameplay to make it more kid friendly in terms of violence, which, let's be real, is perhaps the strongest appeal to practically any DB video game that's come out, with the exception of, of course, character selection. And speaking of character selection, they're usually pretty expansive in Lego video games, too. Just imagine being able to play as all the wonderful and memorable or even not so memorable and one dimensional characters from the franchise. Personally, should such a game come to fruition, I hope they go the classic linear route of starting from the BoDB to EOZ, with movies thrown in to, possibly as DLC.

So, what would you think about that sort of gaming experience? Would you be for it? If so, what would you want to see? If not, where's the lack in appeal to you, whether it be in my own preferences I've brought forward or preconceptions you have dwelling in your own mind?

They've done it with Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, etsetera. Why not Dragon Ball? I think that, if handled well, it could actually be a good game. I would buy it.

It would be fun, but WB and Namco Bandai would have to make a agreement on it for it to happen. I do feel like a lot of older fans will be like "OMG they are making a DBZ games for little kids. Don't buy this shit!!!".

Just a reminder. Star Wars, LOTR, and Indiana Jones have had Lego sets made of their franchises. Dragon Ball has not. That makes no sense to make a Lego game that has no Lego set made of it.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

With Lego Dragon Ball, there would be a lot that they can do with it.

I just imagined Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation in LEGO form.

The Goku minifig character, with his teeth clenched in rage... quickly pops the spiky black hair piece off the top of his head and replaces it with a standing gold hair piece.

...I need this to happen.

I would be more than okay with such a game happening. I'd buy and play the hell out of it.

The problem would be finding a creative way to make a Dragon Ball co-op game.

If it is like most Lego games, wouldn't it be you and your team going on missions collecting lego coins and fighting enemies? Start with original DB, hunt for Dragon balls, you could also do the RR army plot, or Namek. Your playable characters are all the characters on the good side: Bulma, Goku, Oolong, Chichi, later Yamcha and Puar and Roshi, for the first arc, Goku, Krillin, Bulma, Upa, Roshi and Yamcha for the second arc, or Bulma, Gohan, Krillin, Dende, Nail or Vegeta (Goku and Piccolo at the end) for the last arc.

I think it would work fine. Even the other "runaround" plots could work, like Android Saga, Piccolo Daimao, or Buu. Tournament Sagas could be skipped.

They have built Simpsons Lego sets and in August they are going to build Scooby Doo Lego sets. For Portal they aren't planning to build a Lego set as far as I know.

I don't think they will build Lego sets for Anime because most Americans generally won't know many animes while Lego Franchises like Indiana Jones are popular with most people. They are always those bootleg Dragon Ball Lego figures from China...

DBZ is one of the most well known anime in the US next to Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh, Gundam and Voltron. Even if you never watch or read DBZ, you know the name of it.

Not really... Series like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, The Simpsons, and Scooby-Doo are very prevalent in American culture. Dragon Ball? Not so much...

Well yeah since those have been much longer in the US since DBZ is not even 20 years old yet. Dragon Ball is a big brand name in the US though. DBZ, Pokemon and Godzilla are well known Japanese brand names in the US.

Ever heard of Lego Ideas?

https://ideas.lego.com/howitworks

Its how we got awesome sets the Back To The Future DeLorean and the Ghostbusters Ecto 1.

If someone creates a well-done Dragon Ball Lego idea, submits it (and gets 10,000 supporters), and the review board approves it, Lego Dragon Ball would be a thing.
Let's also not forget how popular DBZ was back in its heyday:

If they want a official Lego DB sets to be made then they would have to market to young kids. Besides Kai on Nick Toons and CW a few years ago, they don't really market DB to kids these days. The people who grew up with DBZ in the late 90's and early 2000's are the main buyers for the series. Funimation has been marketing Dragon Ball to the older audience since Ultimate Uncut back in 2005.

Again, Lego Ideas.

We have a Lego Ideas set based on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory, which I don't think is marketed to young children.
As for marketing success of a Lego Dragon Ball set, I'd like to point to the Lego Minecraft sets. The first Lego Minecraft set was a Lego Ideas (then known as Lego Cuusoo) set in 2012 and since it proved to be a success, there is now 4 Lego Minecraft Microworlds that have been released since then with 6 more on the way. Since the JAPANESE company Cuusoo partnered with Lego for this Lego Ideas program, you'd think its a matter of time before someone comes up for a Dragon Ball set. I mean, we currently have a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker under review for crying out loud:

I think a Lego Dragon Ball games would be ingenious. It would really be a shot in the arm in comparison to all the beat-em-ups we've seen in the last 20 years.

I looked in the archives of Lego Ideas and some people did submit ideas for Dragon Ball sets:
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/45715
Kame House looks pretty good, but Goku & Krillin.... no, just no.

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/45139
I realize it is a rough draft, but the Vegeta hair piece is laughable.

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/31414
Don't like the design of the minifigs.

The problem with the Lego Ideas for DBZ is that their guidelines say there is a good chance they won't make a set if there are legal issues specifically with a competing toy manufacturer. I can't imagine Bandai Namco allowing the sale of lego toys without them getting $$$ out of the deal.
