Was Cell lying when he stated that Trunks surpassed him?

Why did Cell make such a point of Trunks surpassing him if he was actually stronger the whole time? What was the point in lying to Trunks?

It's a big enough deal to be worth pointing out because even at his current relaxed level of power, Cell had already thrashed SS Grade 2 Vegeta, who was in turn a little stronger than Trunks in the same form. So for Grade 3 to have put Trunks past Cell's current power was a testament to how much stronger the form had made him.

Trunks likely did surpass Cell's strength level by powering up so much, the problem is he did it the wrong way making his hearing PL worthless since he couldn't land a hit. Grade 3 doesn't seem to have a set multiplier like the rest but can just keep going higher and higher as long as the fighter using it has the ki to keep drawing from and the body strong enough to take it.

You have to think of it from an out-of-universe perspective. We know that Toriyama makes things up as he goes along, so he just wrote that single specific line for the sake of the current chapter, than later on the revelation of Cell being much more powerful is basically just a retcon.

Now if you want an in-universe explanation... really what's the big deal? At the current state Cell was in, Trunks had indeed eclipsed him in power. So Cell mentioned it. But he never took it seriously, he was completely fragrant the whole time because he knew he was safe for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being he can buff up too.

I don't think it was like, a conscious decision on Cell's part, "I am going to lie to Trunks for some unexplained motive!" It's just that is how people talk, not every sentence is 100% dead fact.

He got much stronger than him, but not fast enough to land a hit. I always assumed then that it meant he got as strong as an SSJ2, but lacked the speed to come close to utilizing it at it's full potential.

Cell was comparing Trunks to his base battle strength. His full power was well beyond Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks.

Trunk's ki output did indeed surpass perfect cell while cell was suppressed.So cell wasnt lying.he simply stated the truth.

ofc vs a full power cell,ussj2 trunks would proly break his fist by punching cell.
