What's your opinion on the movie villains as characters?
Leaving opinions on the actual movies aside, what is your opinion on the actual movie villains as characters and their backstories?
I always really liked the other Androids. It makes sense that Dr. Gero would have other creations stored away somewhere, and I really like their designs. Overall though I'd say Bojack is my favorite movie villain in terms of character. Another space pirate is a great idea and he would have been a good rival to Freeza.
Nostalgia makes me like Cooler and Broly too for the same reasons others do. Not sure what else to say there.

Janemba and Hildegarn rampaging around for no good reason feels original in a series where its most iconic villains were all aiming for power or control or some combination of both; the majority of the movie villains just can't compete with Piccolo Daimao, Freeza, or Cell. Been there, done that. It also helps that their powers/designs are a bit bonkers compared to other DB characters. Hildegarn gets his namesake from the idea that the producer didn't know what to make of the design he just witnessed; his mouth agape. So, their lack of character or real motivation sets them apart from the pack.

They're pretty lame really. Just poor man versions of the villains that were in the series for the most part, very few of them had memorable character designs and none really had interesting personalities or back stories.
Broly stands out amongst the lot for being the real Legendary Super Saiyan and having a pretty cool character design but he wasn't an interesting character.

Re: What's your opinion on the movie villains as characters?
Garlic Jr was an idiot, and really he's the only one we can give an honest opinion on because unlike everyone else, he had a movie and a saga to build on as a character.
If we look at motivations, none of the movie villains are really any more or less shallow than series villains:
Turlès, Slug, Hoi, Janemba, and Bojack wanted to run amok across the universe, not unlike Vegeta and Nappa pre Freeza retcon.
Cooler and Paragas wanted revenge, not unlike Dr. Gero. The Movie Androids were programmed to kill Goku via Dr. Gero's hate.
As dumb as it sounds when spoken out loud, Dr. Wheelo wishing to take Master Roshi's and later Goku's body for a brain transfusion is the most original out of all the villains motivation, and with that said, none of them at least based on their motivations are any more or any less characters than Vegeta or Gero are...except Garlic. What an idiot.

Garlic Jr - One of the most unique backstories and motives, but ultimately, a boring character in terms of design and personality. Also, a complete idiot.
Dr. Wheelo - A better version of Dr. Gero before Gero even existed. His backstory is pretty cliche, but his motive to possess the body of the strongest fighter was interesting. He's pretty underrated, imo.
Turles - Eh. Lame. There's just absolutely nothing original about him. He's just Raditz 2.0.
Lord Slug - He's even worse than Turles. A complete rip-off of King Piccolo.
Cooler - Good concept, great design (regular form). Decent personality too... until he transformed and turned into a generic villain. Cooler could have served as a neutral, almost Darkseid-ish character in the series.
Broly - Absolutely abysmal backstory. I love his design in every form though, as well as his personality in his LSSJ form--most intimidating villain by far. I feel his personality in his base form should have been different. I don't think Broly should be associated with Goku at all. He would have served as a far better FOIL for Gohan after the Cell Games. In fact, he'd be the optimal villain to have immediately after that arc.
Bojack and crew - They are undoubtedly the worst movie villains in this series. They have no personalities, no real backstory, and they pop up out of nowhere. It's a shame because their designs are great, the movie they appear in is among the best, and they're space pirates (I guess?)! I can see Bojack with a personality like Lobo, for some reason, and the crew serving as rivals from another universe also in pursuit of the dragon balls.
Androids 14, 15, and 13 - Eh...I always forget they exist. Nothing there, really. We had enough androids.
Hirudegarn - I love him, but dislike the design of his 2nd form. Looks like what I'd imagine Oozaru Cell to look like. Besides that, very interesting backstory and served as the series' Godzilla. I like him a lot.
Janemba - With some small tweaks, this character would make for such an awesome saga. I adore his Fat form so much. His Super form is meh, but the design is great. I wish he'd have been given dialogue in this form. Awesome abilities and backstory. I'd prefer him to be an amalgamation of dark spirits, including past villains, than an ogre possessed by them though.

The movie villains I care for Janemba and Broly because they bring something unique to the table in terms of design and abilities. But their characters are dull as dishwater.

Most of the are terrible. Dr Wheelo does have a great motivation, wanting to take over Muten Roshi's (and later, Goku's) body, rather than the usual "I'm gonna kill everyone because of revenge, or for the Evuls!" Slug and Broly are probably my least favorite, because one is a complete ripoff of a previous villian, and the other has a terrible backstory and his fanboys grossly overhype him and overestimate his abilities. Guess whic is which. Beerus is hands down my favorite movie villian. From his creative design, to his quirky personality, to his orange and blue morality. And the fact that he straight up BEATS Goku and becomes a recurring character in the nexy movie and in Dragon Ball Super.

The only characters actually interesting are first form Janemba and Beerus. Super Janemba is just a copy of Super Buu, though. Dr. Uiro is good, but his movie is meh, could've been done better. Beerus is that amoral-though-neutral character that DB still lacked, so I like him.

Beerus doesn't count as a movie villain even though he debuted in a movie. He's a Toriyama creation and part of the main series.

He's more of a copy of Kid Buu, only without the wackiness--so basically, Kid Buu with the fun sapped out.Super Janemba is just a copy of Super Buu, though.

Re: What's your opinion on the movie villains as characters?
I'm gonna be the odd ball and say I've grown to like Garlic Jr. (in the first movie not the show) I love his original japanese voice actor and he kinda feels like a Pilaf you can take a bit more seriously. I enjoy that he's kind of stupid and has equally cocky henchmen. The way his henchmen can't even baby sit Gohan properly or end up chanting along with Goku during that part where he yells at Garlic to give back Gohan has me laughing every time. I just like those guys, they aren't super original just composites of other characters for but for a single movie they work. This is probably one of my favorite Dragon Ball movies that I enjoy watching more than the actual Raditz episodes they are actually emulating in terms of "a story to get Piccolo and Goku to team up".
I like Beerus and fat Janemba too! But I figured I'd come out as one of the few fans of Garlic.
