Best fight in each arc?

Post by MajinMan » Mon Dec 07, 2015 4:09 am

What is your favorite fight from each arc?

1. Hunt for the Dragon Balls - Goku vs Yamcha. There really aren't many fights in this arc so I guess this one will have to do. Not that it's bad or anything.

2. 21st Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku vs Jackie Chun. Student vs master. Monkey boy vs perverted old man. Need I say more?

3. Red Ribbon Army - Goku vs Grandpa Gohan. I love this fight. The emotion at the end secures it as my favorite from the arc.

4. 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai - Tenshinhan vs Jackie Chun. An extremely underrated one here. Pure hand to hand combat with some cool grapple techniques thrown in there. Their confrontation after their match is intense.

5. Piccolo Daimao - Goku vs Piccolo (round 2). It really looked like Goku was going to die here. That final punch is too epic.

6. 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku vs Majunior. One of the best fights in the entire franchise without a doubt. It's brutal, long, and has many spectacular moments.

7. Saiyan - Goku and company vs Vegeta. Kaioken, kamehameha vs galick gun, oozaru, genki dama, and more. Beginning of the rivalry.

8. Freeza - Goku vs Freeza. This is where the super saiyan legend began. Also, I think the fight is much better in the manga for the most part. The anime dragged it out way too much.

9. Cell - Goku vs Cell. Instantaneous movement kamehameha. Lots of throwback moves and great build up and tension.

10. Majin Buu - Goku vs Vegeta (anime) - One of the more emotional fights in the series. Vegeta's and Goku's rivalry peaks out here.

11. Battle of Gods - Goku vs Beerus. Pretty creative fight with some nice techniques from Beerus. Too many kamehamehas though.
Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.

Rest in peace.

Saiyan Arc ~ Goku vs Nappa. Short & impactful.

Frieza Arc ~ Vegeta vs Recoome. Absolutely badass fight. Vegeta was cunning, smart, arrogant...You name it! He shined as a character in this fight

Cell Arc ~ Goku vs Cell. That KHH was MF'kin deadly!

Buu Arc ~ Goku vs Kid Buu. Greatest Martial Arts Fighter vs Greatest Demonic Creature. One word: Epic!

For DBZ:

Saiyan saga: Has to be the 4-way battle between Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Yajirobe and Vegeta. Although this is probably cheating counting this all as one fight.

Freeza saga: I'm very fond of both the Vegeta/Zarbon fights. I also love the way Goku takes on both Jeice and Burter at the same time on Namek

Cell saga: Goku Vs. Cell, Gohan Vs. Cell or Piccolo Vs. 17.

Buu: Vegito Vs. Super Buu

In Dragonball: Yamcha Vs. Tien in the 22nd tournament is one of the best fights of the series. Otherwise Goku Vs. Piccolo and Goku Vs. Tien in the tournaments were also fantastic.

My list is pretty much the same except for this one. The stuff vs. Cell was all really good, but the Piccolo vs. #17 fight has always stuck with me as a cool as hell fight. Sure, it's animated a little over the top some times (fist-shaped protrusions from the back?), but the two of them throwing the beat down fairly evenly on each other. I guess I like it because it's one of Piccolo's shining moments in the series in my opinion.

I agree with you, man, although i really like Goku vs Kuririn in 22nd TB, but Roshi vs Ten is also great and underrated. Its not fair that Goku gets all the longest and best fights :p

Let's see...I guess for some of these it might be hard to call them a 'fight', but hey, if punches are thrown at all, or the characters are in conflict, I'm counting it. :P

1. Hunt for the Dragon Balls - Goku V.S. Oolong. There's such pure, unadulterated Toriyama in this gag-driven fight. Oolong realizes right off the bat that he's not a contender here, but still finds ways to keep things interesting as he tries to stay away from Goku. Honorable Mention: Goku V.S. Yamcha (especially in the manga with the breaking-the-panel-border gag)

2. 21st Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku V.S. Jackie Chun. I really like Kuririn's fight with Bacterian too, but there's definitely no question that the final match here takes the cake with ease. Honorable Mention: Kuririn V.S. Bacterian

3. Red Ribbon Army - Goku V.S. Red Ribbon Army Soldiers. Specifically I'm talking about when he's running through the base, just mowing down soldiers left and right, before his final confrontation with Black. I dunno why, but I just have always really liked those scenes. It's such a great showing of Goku's power, and how far he's come, that not even being insanely outnumbered can stop his progress. Honorable Mention: Arale V.S. General Blue (ALMOST went with that one)

4. 22nd Tenkaicih Budokai - Goku V.S. Kuririn. In a lot of ways the final match here is more deserving, as it has everything this fight does as well, but there's just something about the pure, fun rivalry between these two finally coming to a head that I really like. There's a lot of emotional investment in the final too, but it's still nothing quite like this. Honorable Mention: Goku V.S. Tenshinhan

5. Piccolo Daimao - Goku V.S. Piccolo Daimao (the rematch). This is our first insanely high leveled fight in the series, and man is it an incredible ride to witness. It also has even more emotional investment than any fight before it, with the death of Goku's friends. Honorable Mention: Goku V.S. Tambourine (for the emotion there)

6. 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku V.S. Piccolo. Much like it's predecessor before it, this fight is more intense than anything we'd ever seen before it. In fact, this fight actually has my favorite 'style' to it, for lack of a better word. There's still a heavy emphasis on hand-to-hand combat, to the point it actually feels like it's not just stalling till later, but there's also the option of some incredibly large energy blasts coming in to play as well. About the only thing this fight lacks is the same level of emotional impact as the one with Daimao, but we can't have everything all the time I guess. Honorable Mention: Kuririn V.S. Piccolo

7. Saiyan - Goku and Piccolo V.S. Raditz. This fight is pretty much the last time where the fighting seems exactly like it did in the 23rd Tournament, and it's one of the few times where we have a multiple people versus one person fight that's not completely one-sided in favor of the stronger solo person, or done more as a passing-the-baton style. This fight really doesn't get enough love in my book. Honorable Mention: Goku V.S. Vegeta

8. Freeza - Super Saiyan Goku V.S. Freeza. I really like Goku fighting Freeza in general, but if you consider both fights part of the same battle (which they very much are, I admit), then it's way too long...and it also suffers from the same freakin' backdrop that we've suffered through the entirety of the arc with so far. Once Goku reaches the SS form though, things change pretty quickly with Freeza trying to blow up the planet, and suddenly, new backdrop! The fight is intense as all hell too. I'm probably biased towards this fight overall though since it's where I got started as a fan. Honorable Mention: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn V.S. The Ginyu Force (they're various fights, yes, but dammit I'm cheating here!)

9. Androids/Cell - Piccolo V.S. Imperfect Cell. This fight has a tone of mystery to it that I don't think any other fight in the series has ever really had, at least at first (kind of a pity it didn't last longer really), and really makes a great first showing for both our newly-powered-up Piccolo, and the creepy Cell. Honorable Mention: Piccolo V.S. Android 17 (huh, not a huge Piccolo fan in general, but he does get both of the best fights here really)

10. Majin Boo - Goku and Vegeta V.S. Kid Boo. This one is arguably multiple fights as well, especially when you factor in Mr. Satan and Mr. Boo's involvement, but overall this fight encompasses everything a final conflict should IMO. The entirety of Earth is gone, as is all it's people, something that despite all the dire moments in the past has never happened before. Multiple new attempts at powering up - Super Saiyan 3, Fusion, Gohan's powerup - have all failed to take Boo down for good. There might have been cleaner ways to end the arc earlier in retrospect, but none of them hold the same feeling of being out of options that this finale does, when it all comes down to the first (in-series, anyway) success of a Genki Dama. It's the perfect ending for the arc. Honorable Mention: Great Saiyaman V.S. various crooks (yeah, I'm cheating again really, so sue me)

Can't really say much in regards to Battle of Gods or Resurrection 'F' so far, based on the fact that they're both so new, as well as the fact that there's fairly few fights between them actually. For better or worse, they're much shorter arcs compared to everything previous.

I don't know how anyone hasn't listed this fight:

Nothing tops that, imo.

Dragonball: Goku against Piccolo Jr in the world martial arts tournament. That is one of the most brutal and best fights in the history of the entire series. Great utilization of techniques and strategy. I'm surprised Piccolo never became a giant again in the series.

Saiyan saga: Goku & Piccolo Vs. Raditz --- Two of the most powerful beings on the planet at the time join forces and protect Earth. They really had to work together to beat Raditz.

Freeza saga: So many fights on Namek. But I have to go with the obvious which is Goku Vs. Freeza. Honorable mentions are Zarbon against Vegeta (first fight they had). Another honorable mention is Recoome against Gohan and Vegeta. Piccolo against second form Freeza was badass as well.

Android/Cell saga: Piccolo against 17 hands down. This fight proved that no Super Saiyans are needed for a fight in DBZ to be epic. Most fights in DBZ involve one fighter totally outclassing the other, but in this case both Piccolo and 17 were pretty much dead even. The Hellzone Grenade was a brilliant move, too bad it was only used once and never again.

Majin Buu saga: Goku against Vegeta in the Anime. Not much else needs to be said here.

Battle of Gods: Goku against Beerus (obvious).

I have yet to decide on DB Super. The jury is still out on that one.

It really isn't haha. I was trying to make my list as diverse as possible, but Goku just gets everything.

Pilaf arc: Everybody VS Great Ape Goku
21st Tenkaichi Budokai: Namu VS Lanfang
Red Ribbon Army: Goku and Kuririn VS Pirate Robot
Uranai Baba: Yamcha VS Mummy-kun and Goku VS Mummy-kun. I'm counting it as one fight since Goku basically had to step in so they could advance. I don't normally feel the need to engage in the Yamcha kick-him-while-he's-down party, but that was, to use terms thrown around far too much, "humiliating" and possibly "disrespectful."
22nd Tenkaichi Budokai: Goku VS Kuririn
Piccolo Daimao: Kame Sennin and Chaozu VS Piccolo Daimao
23rd Tenkaichi Budokai: Kuririn VS Majunior
Saiyan arc: Goku VS Vegeta (it kind of can't be anything else...?)
Freeza arc: Vegeta, Piccolo, Kuririn, and Gohan VS Freeza
Android arc: Goku VS Cell
Buu arc: Gotenks VS Buu

Hunt For the Dragon Balls - Goku vs. Oolong - hillarious fight which also taught us about Oolong's power. Well that and also because Oolong is one of my favorite characters.

21st Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku vs. Jackie Chun - without any doubt that is the greatest fight in the arc, while the arc featured some very comical fights which were very enjoyable, this fight featured both funny and action-packed moments, it was truly amazing.

Red Ribbon Army - Goku vs. Tao Pai Pai (1st round) - I can't describe how much I love this fight, it is the first time we see Goku as being useless against an oponent, it was truly shocking and added more depth to both of the characters. We found out how STRONG Tao Pai Pai is, and also that Goku isn't invincible as we thought.

22nd Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku vs. Kuririn - I love this fight a lot, I've been seriously waiting for this fight to happen when I watched the show for the first time. It was great and intresting to see both Kame school students face off each other. And While I loved Goku vs. Tenshinhan too a lot, this fight was just better in my opinion.

Piccolo Daimao - Yajirobe vs. Cymbal/Goku vs. Piccolo Daimao (2nd round) - I really can't decide which one I like more. the first was when we first introduced to Yajirobe, and after we saw Kuririn die by Tambourine, and Goku having HARD time against him, seeing Yajirobe beating Cymbal so easily was truly shocking. And of course the second one, because it was very enjoyable, intresting and Piccolo Daimao torturing Goku was amazing as well.

23rd Tenkaichi Budokai - Goku vs. Piccolo Jr./Ma Jr. - Wow that was a hard one. That arc featured really great fights, from Kuririn vs. Piccolo Jr. to Goku vs. Tenshinhan' rematch. But that fight, it was something we never saw before, from all aspects. All the new technics were very enjoyable, as well as the finale.

Saiyan - Goku/Kuririn/Gohan/Yajirobe vs. Vegeta - It might be cheating, but honestly this is one of the greatest fight in the whole franchise. The Kamehameha/Galick Gun clash was awesome, and I loved that everyone got his shining moment.

Freeza - Goku vs. Freeza - for the first time we see the Super Saiyan, the true Saiyan warrior being unleased, and it was a f**king masterpiece that I'll remember forever. The whole fight itself was amazing as well.

Cell - Piccolo vs. #17 - Goku vs. Cell is a close second, but Piccolo's fight against #17 was the highlight of the arc for me, both equal fighters fighting and giving their best. Also Piccolo getting the spotlight for a change was great.

Majin Boo - Majin Vegeta vs. Goku - I don't think I have to say why I even chose this fight. It was just an amazing fight in my opinion.

Battle of Gods (Movie) - Piccolo vs. chopsticks  :D

Hunt for the Dragon Balls: Oozaru Goku vs Pilaf's Gang. It is short and it is not much of a fight, but I love how it shows that despite how immature and stupid Pilaf is, he kinda has a sense of pride. Also manages to motivate Shu and Mai, like a true leader (for a group of misfits, that is).

21st Tenkaichi Budokai: Goku vs Roshi. No need to detail it. Simply a masterpiece. Kame-Sennin is entirely worthy of being called the world's strongest man.

Red Ribbon Army: Goku vs Tao Pai Pai (Round 1). The first time we see Goku struggling to do anything to an opponent. Tao is the first real villain and he truly deserves the honor. The moment where Goku is crawling on the ground trying to catch the guy's legs but everything he does is hopeless is just so tense and exciting.

22nd Tenkaichi Budokai: Nothing really stands out to me other than the Roshi vs Tenshinhan fight, since I love the old wise pervert. However, I think I will put Goku vs Krillin here, since it is the only time the rivalry between the two actually pays off.

Piccolo Daimao: Goku vs Young Piccolo Daimao. Amazing from start to finish. Especially the finish. While the fight does kinda drag on near the end, to me at least, the finishing blow just makes up for everything.

23rd Tenkaichi Budokai: Goku vs Piccolo. Nothing more to say, Favorite fight in the entire series.

Saiyan Arc: Goku vs Vegeta. It might be the cliche choice, but the sheer amount of incredible moments in this fight justifies everything. Second best fight in the series.

Namek Arc: Goku vs Freeza. Not much to say here. However, for this arc I really want to mention a very very underrated fight: Dodoria vs the Namekian Warriors. It is brutal and well animated and for such a quick battle, it really stood out to me and left me the impression that I was indeed in for a treat, going into this arc.

Android Arc: Goku vs Perfect Cell. One of the few actual fights in this arc. Most of the battles were very one-sided in this portion of the story, which really puts me off. The only other actual fights were Piccolo vs 17, which is crap and Goku vs 19, which is boring. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that Goku showing his full power is less amazing.

Buu Arc: I really don't enjoy any fight in this arc for the same reason stated above: most fights were one-sided. I don't particularly care about Goku vs Majin Vegeta and for me it was painful to go trough the Kid Buu part of the story (having just finished watching it days ago the feeling is very fresh in my mind). That kind only leaves the Goku vs Fat Buu fight, which I will go with, if nothing else but the amazing transformation sequence.

Black Star Dragon Balls Arc: Goku vs Ledgic. The best part of this arc is the Don Kia episodes, so this should be it.

I will return to the Bebi Arc, Super 17 Arc and Shadow Dragons Arc once I am finished with rewatching them, which I suppose will be by the end of this week, so I might edit this post or come up with another, depending on how the thread keeps up till then.

Battle of Gods Arc: Godku vs Beerus. Much better than the movie fight and an amazing ending to a pretty lackluster retelling.

Serious answer, I find the "final" fights the best in almost every single saga.

Pilaf saga: The crew vs Oozaru Goku or Goku vs Yamcha II.

First tournament: Jackie Chun vs Goku

RRA saga: Goku vs Tao

Second tournament: Goku vs Tien.

Piccolo saga: Goku vs Piccolo Daimao II

Third tournament: Goku vs Piccolo

Saiyan saga: Goku and co vs Vegeta - You kind of can't pick any other.

Namek saga: Goku vs Frieza - Downright iconic.

Cell saga: SSJ2 Gohan vs Cell - Yeah, yeah. I know it's more of a beatdown than a fight, but it's one of the greatest beatdowns ever, and I am a major fan of those (e.g. Goku vs Nappa, Goku vs Ginyu Force, Vegeta vs Pui Pui, etc.). The beam struggle is literally my favorite scene from this entire series, including Dragon Ball, GT, and Supercrap.

Buu saga: Goku, Vegeta, Buu, and Mr. Satan vs Kid Buu - Awesome, awesome fight. The Kid Buu arc really compensated for the disappointment that was this saga.

BoG Arc: Goku vs Beerus I - Only because it's a reflection of how terrible this series is.

Hunt for the Dragon Balls: Goku vs Yamcha, not like there's anything else to choose from.
21st Tenkaichi Budokai: Jackie Chun vs Goku
Red Ribbon Army: Goku vs Tao Pai Pai, round 2.
22nd Tenkaichi Budokai: Goku vs Kuririn. When the main fight of the arc isn't the best, there's a problem.
Piccolo Daimao: Goku vs Piccolo Daimao.
23rd Tenkaichi Budokai: Goku vs Piccolo Jr, best fight in the series.
Saiyan arc: Goku & co vs Vegeta, second best fight.
Freeza arc: I'm very fond of the Vegeta vs Recoome fight, but I have to go with Freeza vs Goku, it's really well paced and choreographed, emotional and full of impact.
Cell arc: None of the fights here were very good, but I'm going with #18 vs Vegeta.
Boo arc: The fights in the Boo arc always felt so short to me, this is a hard one as well. I think Goku vs Kid Boo is the best.
Beerus arc: Goku vs Beerus, round 2.

There's no use basically C+P Doctor.'s list so I'll just go ahead and say that I follow his list with just a few exceptions:

RRA Arc: Tao Pai Pai vs. Goku Round 1. One of my favorite curbstomps in the entire series and as far as I'm concerned. He was the first villain to be more sinister than goofy and comedic so him thrashing Goku like he did carried a lot of weight.

Android/Cell Arc: Goku vs. Perfect Cell. Loved the choreography in this one. Felt very akin to Piccolo vs. Goku, in that there felt like there was a lot of purpose behind all of their attacks and that it wasn't just mindlessly spamming barrages of ki everywhere for emphasis. Bonus points for including the ingenuity of the IT Kamehameha.

Except Goku and Vegeta repeatedly acknowledge that they have several other options (e.g. doing the fusion dance, fusing with the Potara, bringing back Gotenks, bringing back Gohan, letting Buu kill Goku and then having him smoke Buu with his new afterlife body), they just think the Genki-Dama would make a point about responsibility.

Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Re: Best fight in each arc?

Hunt for the Dragon Balls Arc: Goku versus Yamucha. It broke the panel. That's awesome.

21st Budoukai Arc: Goku versus Jackie Chun. Definitely the most original tournament fight of all, with lullabies, Oozaru, ringout fakeout, and an ending that actually went against the traditional rules to really draw out the tension.

Red Ribbon Arc: Kuririn, Upa, and Pu'erh versus Dracula Man. Kuririn with "hair" was funny, and, hey, Pu'erh gets to do something useful!

22nd Budoukai Arc: Goku versus Tenshinhan. Another predictable one, but they were good together. Loved the volleyball stuff.

Piccolo Arc: Yajirobe versus Cymbal. Yajirobe roasts him over a spit and eats him. How can anything else compete with that?

23rd Budoukai Arc: Ma Junior versus Shen. Some really good insights into their relationship, and a tantalizing hint of what's to come with their origins. But since God's not a demon, why is he affected by the Mafuba?

Saiyan Arc: Nappa and Vegeta versus Everybody. I'm counting the whole thing as one fight. Absolutely awesome. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Handles the arc's character development. Great use of teamwork. Fantastic dramatic death scenes. Doesn't fall victim to the annoying oneupmanship of later Toriyama battle sequences.

Freeza Arc: Vegeta versus Freeza. When Vegeta realizes he can't defeat Freeza, that's really the only part of the Freeza fight that successfully forges an emotional connection to itself. Vegeta's journey the entire arc has been fascinating, and that it ends with his arrogance torn to shreds in such a way is both fitting and poignant.

Cell Arc: Trunks versus Freeza. He cuts him in half with a sword. That's awesome. And iconic.

Boo Arc: Gotenks versus Boo. It's hilarious. Wonderfully creative moves. And it includes Piccolo face palming, possibly my favorite panel of him ever.
