Goku and ChiChi's relationship

Post by TheUltimateVegito » Sat Dec 19, 2015 10:07 am

Chichi isn't an amazing character, but she does have great qualities to her. She's a great wife for Goku due to the great dynamics between them and thus made the series better for it. ChiChi thought she was following the appropriate steps for marriage but ended up doing it in the most unconventional way possible with the most unconventional guy possible. It's ironic when you think about it.

Goku's purity led to him accepting marriage even though he doesn't have any romantic feelings for ChiChi and women in general. It took an unconventional guy like Goku, who goes against the idealogical pure hearted person, to court someone like ChiChi who attempted to follow the idealogical steps for marriage but by marrying Goku did the opposite due to not being very bright similar to how Goku misunderstood marriage by not being very bright himself.

Honestly, if it were up to Goku, I doubt he'd ever be into woman. He said so himself that he find woman's "parts" more weird than anything, and he couldn't understand men's fascination with them. But since he was obligated to marry ChiChi he went on to do so. There might be a hidden message in there about how we perceive love as a species back then. Because standards for a man used to be to have a wife and child, and to be a pure person would be to have the required feelings that comes with that. But with Goku, his pureness didn't gave him any predetermined straightness because that's not what his pureness stems from. He only married a woman because she follows what she perceived to be society's standards at the time and as a result Goku felt obligated, but not romantic. It could be commentary about how we're not truly following our hearts, but rather what society determines our hearts should be like. Or maybe I'm looking too deep into this.

Also, her quest to be the ideological mother also helped moulded Gohan to be the way he is, and that's a big plus. She also helped trained Goten which is pretty cool, and her leniency towards Goten really showcased how Goku's death affected her. Chichi was more concerned with being the ideological mother than how much money they have (Until the Buu arc onwards, when they were becoming really poor). Goku (and even ChiChi herself) are capable of putting food on the table on their own. This is more of a reason why ChiChi and Goku were perfect for each other. Goku puts ChiChi's say over his own, despite how much Goku may disagree with her because he honours his Grandpa who taught him to always be nice to woman. If ChiChi asked Goku to focus on getting a job or bringing as much money as possible, Goku would do it without argument (As shown in DB Super), yet ChiChi doesn't concern herself much with the matters that would prevent Goku from training to his heart's content mainly due to the money they already have from the Ox King and being more concerned with her motherhood.

I think they are good for each other. The unconventional way they got together was probably for the best in the long run since the way Toriyama wrote Goku really made it seem like romance was the furthest thing on his mind and this was the fastest and least painful way for an author who, if I remember correctly, doesn't like to draw such things, to get the whole relationship thing over with. But I think people exaggerate the level of disinterest Goku has regarding such things and believe he has genuine attraction towards her ( Goten, duh ), especially with the little statement in the last chapter regarding saiyans and their preference in women.

I still think that part at the end of the Cell Saga that showed her crying after finding out about Goku's death one of the more emotional scenes in the manga. It was really short but it stuck with me.
