This franchise is full of those and it has since 1994 when I got into db, what's the most hyped up fan speculation?. I could get into many but I think that vegeta killing golden freeza is the funniest, and it also had the dumbest and most pathetic fanboy reaction.

The "new 200 episode series" tall tale that followed Battle of God's theatrical release. The only proper responses seemed to be "THISISEXACTLYWHATIWANTSOITMUSTBETRUE!!1!" and "...really?" Particularly given that you need not know anything about anime production to see how dubious it was.

I recall speculation that Resurrection F would take place in an alternate universe because Frieza was alive and somehow stronger than a SSJG, neither Goten or Trunks appeared on the film poster, Goku had a different gi, and Gohan's hairstyle was reminiscent to his Namek days.

Now that I've seen enough of Super, I feel silly for ever assuming they may have done that. Before that episode? Well, it would have been a treat to fans and made that scene make a little bit more sense. The episode preview inadvertently teased it with the camera angle facing the back of Vegeta's hair as he powered up. =P

There were people on this very forum who were absolutely convinced that he would be the star of the movie, based on things as inconsequential as his position on the movie poster. It was hilarious.

Honestly, the only problems I have with getting overhyped is when people seem like they're insulted that what they called turned out to be wrong. Disappointment, I get, but...insulted? I can't even process that.

With Resurrection F, I definitely recall a lot of people thinking that for sure this was going to be an alternate universe tale, and the 'worst wish' was going to be for Freeza to never have been defeated in the first place. There was a lot of 'compelling' reasoning and guesses in this theory, so that a lot of people that didn't think it up on their own started to believe the same thing...and then it all just crumbled out from under them.

I'd say that terrible misdirect about "maybe we'll finally see some female saiyans" via Vegeta dispensing what turned out to be no more than trivia in Chapter 6 of the manga.

Always expect the most boring (imo) answer to be true is what I'm learning in terms of anticipating anything with Super

Anyone remember some speculation back in 2005-2006 or so that FUNimation would make their own Dragonball series as a direct continuation of DBZ with their own production costs?

I don't think FUNI even has the ability to fund their own animation, but I remember speculation of an American produced Dragonball series a decade ago. Obviously it was a load of nonsense but a lot of people believed FUNI could make their own series.
