Was Movie 12 intended to be a parody? Its pretty funny
I've been thinking about why Movie 12 is generally well-liked, the whole movie seems to make fun of Dragonball as a whole and almost feels like a parody.
1. Janemba as a villain makes no sense at all and the movie knows that and doesn't waste time with set-up. Considering the lame set-up for previous movie villains as these badass characters with one dimensional personalities (like Bojack, Super 13, etc.), its a change of pace. For some reason it works. Jellybeans appear all throughout the Otherworld as a backdrop.
2. We have Pikkon, a tough no-nonsense character from the Buu saga literally screaming bad jokes and threats at a crystal wall to break it.
3. Goten/Trunks fighting Hitler's army is done with huge cartoony outlines and chibi-style animation for humor purposes. We don't even know why Hitler is there as he shouldn't even exist in the Dragonball universe, and the whole thing is like some huge gag.
4. Freeza comes back only to be immediately killed by Gohan in one punch. Considering the recent F movie, this is pretty funny in retrospect.
5. Goku and Vegeta bickering over fusing is even more funny than in the Buu saga. Especially Vegeta's reaction to the fusion dance, something we never saw him react to in the Buu arc.
6. Fat Gogeta (or Veku) is hilarious because we actually see him try to fight the villain, which fat Gotenks never did in the Buu arc.
7. Gogeta himself, the hyped up fusion, gets literally less than 2 minutes of screentime and kills the villain right away. Giving the fans almost exactly what they want in as little time as possible.
I almost feel like Movie 12 is the writers having a load of fun and just making a silly movie to make up for all the faux drama some of the previous movies had. Its pretty damn funny because its like the whole movie knows its in on its own joke. Reminds me of Dragonball.

Well, it reminds you of Dragon Ball because it is Dragon Ball. It's the same series. I've always thought that it was the best movie from the originals because of the comedy, visuals, music, fun designs, etc. It's just some good old fun. As for it being a parody, I don't really see it. It pretty much has the same tone as the Buu arc and was silly because of that. Movies usually copy the most recent things that happened previous to their release.
Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.

Fusion Reborn incorporated the fun angle of Buu Arc, while Wrath of Dragon used dark & grim tone of latter Buu Arc portions
I absolutely LOVED M12
Janemba as villain was quite fresh after 3 continuous onslaugh of Broly films
His techniques & skill actually makes his character appealing. Strip that. You have Broly2.0
Goku & Veggie were BACK like what? After 20 films?
Watchin SSJ3 Goku vs Super Janemba (roundhouse kick, reality-warp, after-images, materialized sword) & Veggie's reactions to Fusion idea gave me the ultimate joy of bein a dbz fan
Overall atmosphere like colourful & wacky OtherWorld was refreshing change post-Earth/Alien Planets (M1-7 setting waz mainly Earth, M8 was New Vegeta, M9 was random alien place, M10 & 11 was AGAIN Earth)
Fusion Reborn was distinct mainly for its setting imo

I recall Vegeta saying something like "That dance? I saw everything from the Other World! No chance in hell am I doing that!" or something along those lines.precita wrote:5. Other than that,I can see what you mean.

Movie 12 had a lot of humor in it even for a movie with a serious plot. Kinda how BOG was to me. Janemba is a fun villain and Gogeta should have a bigger role, but still a good movie IMO.

I really love Fusion Reborn. It was really quite an entertaining ride because of how whimsical and out-of-context is what for Dragon Ball and how much it reveled in it. It reminded me of why I love the Majin Boo arc so much.

Re: Was Movie 12 intended to be a parody? Its pretty funny
Dragon Ball Z Movie #12 was directed by Yama'uchi Shigeyasu, who was probably the series director of Dragon Ball Z Episodes #200-291 without taking credit. Yama'uchi certainly saw the series through a more comedic era, so it makes sense for a film he directed to have a comedic bent. He also directed the first two Broli films, which had their share of antics.
