Funimation's original DBZ movie Blu-Rays
I was considering buying some of the bluray double features but was unsure about some of their aspects. Can someone please tell me if the remastering process for the movies was any different than the one for the orange bricks? And also if the process of cropping the footage was done by frame or if they just zoomed in and called it a day? Or is that all that needed to be done since they were intended to be cropped for theaters in the first place?
Thanks in advance

I'm surprised these double feature blu-rays haven't seemed to drop in price.

Some of them. I went to a movie store and the DBZ Season 1 Blu-Ray was cheaper than the Orange Brick version.LordCrumb wrote:I'm surprised these double feature blu-rays haven't seemed to drop in price.

For all intents and purposes, the Blu-ray transfer of the movies (and DVD) are the same process as the Orange Bricks, since it was done at around the same time as their recent show transfer with Steve Franko.

The results are much better though, because it was on 35mm film vs. the series 16mm. Also, the later films, as the series, had the DNR turned way down, so there's a noted improvement there, and they actually look great with all of that grain.

Best to get the Dragon Boxes. The audio on those is beyond compare, because Toei kept those tracks, unlike the series.

Why didnt toei bothered to gave the audio masters to FUNI for the movies?DB1984 wrote:Best to get the Dragon Boxes. The audio on those is beyond compare, because Toei kept those tracks, unlike the series.

Cause they got theatrical reels. I belive Kei at one point said what you heard on FUNi's release is about what people heard in theaters (he can correct me if i'm wrong). Whats the audio on the Japanese laserdisc?DB1984 wrote:That I'd like to know.KIbawler wrote:Why didnt toei bothered to gave the audio masters to FUNI for the movies?DB1984 wrote:Best to get the Dragon Boxes. If it's something you're into, the Broly double (not triple!) feature Blu-ray has alternate angles for the Japanese track, which is, as far as I know, the only Dragon Ball Blu-ray where that is the case, though it lacks the dub with Japanese music track.

Wow I didn't know that. Didn't Kei17 state at one point that when he saw the old films in theaters in his hometown very recently, the audio quality was great, despite being on optical tracks?eledoremassis02 wrote:Cause they got theatrical reels. Yes, all the movies except for DBZ movie 13 and Path to Power were shown at theaters with optical soundtrack audio which is the source FUNi uses. Toei started using Dolby Surround from DBZ movie 13, but the movie on FUNi's blu-ray release sounds unbelievably muffled for some reason. The single DVD was better.eledoremassis02 wrote:Cause they got theatrical reels. I used to think the optical soundtrack audio on FUNi's releases is just bad and worthless, but after watching some old movies at a movie theater in 2013, I changed my mind. The sound engineers at the time mixed the audio with the final format in mind, so the optical soundtrack sounded awesome at the theater. Now in my opinion, you should at least once watch the movies with FUNi's Japanese audio at full volume for a truly theatrical experience. The DBox audio is better for other kinds of viewing.
The Japanese laserdisc release had the magnatic tape audio in PCM, which is the best source quality-wise so far.

I'm very interested in playing some Japanese audio on my speakers now. Is that why the laser discs are still pricey?kei17 wrote:Yes, all the movies except for DBZ movie 13 and Path to Power were shown at theaters with optical soundtrack audio which is the source FUNi uses. Re: Funimation's original DBZ movie Blu-Rays
I ended up getting the first double feature to check it out. It's much better than I was expecting but maybe a bit too bright on some parts. Still a nice addition to my collection, I'll probably get a couple more later on.
Thanks for your insight on this everyone.

Colors seem a bit washed out to me compared to the Dragon Boxes. Still, they're pretty much the only option ya got until TOEI does their own Blu-Ray release.
