Streamlining my Dragonball DVD collection

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Streamlining my Dragonball DVD collection

Post by Akira » Wed May 03, 2006 1:01 am

I hate that half my DVDs have cases that have creases in the case plastic, flimsy plastic or those cheap spindles that have the little plastic spikes that break off. I have decided to order a bunch of replacement cases in bulk to have my entire collection in the exact same quality DVD cases. Have one standard accross the board is my plan.

If I am going to do that, I decided I may as well get color cases to do something different as well.

I found this website, and they seem to have decent prices:

http://www.meritline.com/

Thier cases come in Black, White, Red, Blue, Green, Yellow and Clear. I only think Clear is good for anime titles that have reversable covers like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex or the Rurouni Kenshin movies. Then you can see both sides. Black is basic so Black and Clear are out of the running for my Dragonball/Z/GT DVD collection.

I am thinking double disc White Cases for Dragonball because all the volumes have white backgrounds and it would go well with it. I am not 100% set on this so if you think another color would be better, let me know.

Dragonball GT has black backgrounds across the series. I have been seriously considering Yellow or Red for that series. Two friends that I asked said definately Red, but I am not 100% sure on that decision either.

The main problem to decide on is Dragonball Z. Between the Red and Blue Vegeta Saga Ultimate Uncut style releases and the regular Ginyu-Kid Buu saga style releases, it is very hard to pick a single color that would compliment the Dragonball Z series as a whole.

There is also the matter of the Movies and TV specials. Should they have a seperate color to themselves? If so, what color and why?

Basically this is a two fold question. Does the site I found seem like a good place to get replacement cases in bulk from? If you know of a better option, please let me know.

Secondly, based on what I've said, what colors would you use for each series and why? I am especially looking for input on what would compliment the Dragonball Z series best, because I am having the hardest time deciding on it.

Thanks for your input guys, I really appreciate it.

Why not try using the main colors of the DBZ logo? Also, I would suggest (if available) using cases to separate the series by sagas.

In all honesty, I can't offer too much input on this. I've decided to put my dvd's in a carrying case. It's compact, easy access, and I can pick up and go with the whole series at any given moment

I had something similar.
Yellow from the moment Goku turned SSJ until the last Android dvd
Green for the rest of the Cell dvd's
Red for the World Tournament saga until the end of Kid Buu.
Blue keepcases for the movies.
White for the 2 tv-specials
and well the rest just Amaray keepcases in black.
I was indeed playing with the idea having of combining 2 dvd's in 1 dual cover something similar too the regular Dragon Ball releases but I ended up buying the Japanese boxes and am slowly selling some of Funimation's releases.

What I do, since there are so many DVDs (including DB) in my collection, I buy "thinpaks" or thin DVD cases. They're like 1/2 the thickness of normal keepcases, but can hold everything from the DVD to the insert. I primarily use them on my Dragon Ball/Z/GT DVDs since there's so damn many of them.

They're sold at some retail/electronic stores, but are usually clear or black. You'd have to look online for the colored ones.

But they're useful, "thinpaking" saved me mucho storage space for more stuff.

FUNimation discs have 3 episodes per disc (about), and the new Japanese releases have 6. If you buy some double-disc cases, then you could even print out the new covers from the Japanese releases and use those instead of the FUNi ones. Just an idea I had a while ago.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I have a small four shelf book case that I use primarily for displaying my Dragonball Manga and DVD collection. So I just went with normal sized DVD cases. They looked to be Amaray in the pictures, I sure hope that is what they are when they arrive. Here is what I went with:

Dragonball - White
Dragonball Z - Red
Dragonball GT - Yellow
Dragonball Z Movies - Blue

Let me know what you guys think of this. I thought about it and couldn't totally decide on one idea so I just went with this since I was fairly sure it would look good this way. We'll find out when they arrive.

You're going to have to post a pic for us, so we can see the multi-colored DB prettiness.

Under what section are the DVD cases? I looked throught the site briefly and couldn't find them. I really want to do this at some point also since the cases FUNi provides are pretty bad quality.

Thanks!

I swear I have around 50 Dragon Ball DVDs and no two cases are exactly the same. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little but there are all kinds of different ones. I thought it was kinda weird to see so many different cases come from the same source.

It is not limited to Dragon Ball either, my Yu Yu Hakusho dvd's have the same problem.
I think Funimation just buys a bundle of dvd-cases and go with whatever is the cheapest.
That is why I gradually exchanged dvd-cases with those from somewhere else.

Yeah, sometimes I accidentially end up buying a DVD with a broken case and end up replacing it.

Also, Movie 8 came in a white case. I thought that was weird, but I switched it to a black one because I figured it would've been way to out of place.
