Favorite Inaccurate Dub.

Post by Bansho64 » Sat Apr 16, 2016 9:16 pm

There a lot of dubs of the Dragon Ball series. Some are very inaccurate, such as the Funimation dub of Z, and some are almost identical to the japanese version. I wanted to hear you guy's opinions on which ones you guys like. I freaking love the Ocean dub now. It makes me wish I had been born a bit earlier to actually watch it

Definitely the Big Green Dub. So many humour mistakes it's hard not to laugh.

One of those errors being Son Gokou saying "Kamehame-Ha" when he was actually throwing a Genki Dama. :P

Edit: On this dub they referred to God as God. They were actually accurate on something! :D

Probably the English dub that was recorded in Malaysia, known in fan slang as "the Speedy dub." It's my favorite for three reasons.

1) Who. The. Hell....was the target audience for this dub? I have not been able to figure that out for the life of me. Are there really enough Malaysian people who want to hear an English dub done by people from Malaysia, as opposed to just a straight-forward Malaysian dub?

2) I know English is a tough language, and I don't like to make fun of people who struggle with it...but c'mon. This was just too damn much.

3) In spite of the prior two reasons, there actually is one legitimately good thing the Speedy dub has going for it: their ME (Music and Effects) track is one of the best I've ever heard. I don't know how somebody as random as Speedy Video was able to get their hands on such a crystal-clear ME tape, but the sound effects and music sound crisp and clear, and not muffled like almost every other dub out there.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I was under the impression that most inaccuracies in the German dub come from filler, as that dub used the French script heavily modified with an accurate manga translation. Also, I'm fairly sure that most of the inaccuracies of the Speedy dub were due to the script being an Engrishy mess, and at times it might be the most accurate english dub for certain movies. Not that it makes the dub *good* by any stretch of the imagination, though...

The French dub avoids naming things as much as possible and have really strange dub errors, not to mention not naming attacks properly or consistently. At least it doesn't partake of the character assassination of the early Funi dubs.

I don't have any "favorite" inaccurate dubs, but you can't be any more inaccurate than the Arabic dub, where Shen Long doesn't exist...

Malaysian Speedy Dub hands down & I'm a Malaysian :P

Random Name Changes: Goku becomes Gohan....Gohan becomes Goku in Bojack Unbound

Script/lines butchered: Don misunderstang mi Kakarott...I dun not cum here tu hump you!! Da man who bit you iz me!!!

Above all, exceptional voice talents with masterful job at "getting under the skin of characters"

You name it, Malaysian Speedy Dub has it all. To be fair, the lack of resources (obtaining copyrights from Funi Dub, shipping & sales rights etc), but booming DBZ popularity in M'sia during late 90's/early 2000 must've forced Speedy Dub to simply hire whatever staffs they have at hand to dub DBZ Movies by keeping Mandarin/Taiwanese Dub as close reference

If you observe, Speedy Dub use Piypoyeko instead of Kamehameha for years. But in Fusion Reborn, its renamed as DragonBall Power. Talk abt consistency

No specific demographic audience actually. Just making quick bucks & chiaow!

In terms of pure enjoyment, the Saban dub, athough for unintentional comedy the Big Green/AB Groupe dub takes the cake. The "Speedy dub" is occasionally amusing (Kaio-ken...up to times!) but most of the time it's just plain bad.

The Big Green Dub definitely gets the most laughs out of me. The Speedy dub is mostly just a miserable experience with some funny bits strewn about, but not consistently enough for me to enjoy it.

For all practical reasons, FUNimashun.

For a more deliberately off-kilter experience, GRAND VERTE.

For the record, Speedy Dubs is the actual name of the studio, it is not a fan nickname.

I don´t know from which dub is exactly (since I only watched DB in either JP dub or LatAm dub and hardly ever look at DB in english) the one that had the following (amusing for the wrong reasons) lines:
  1. "Your father was a brillant scientist Kakarot" - Vegeta
  2. "(strange Freeza´s lines where talks like riding a horse after impaling Kuririn)" - Second Form Freeza
  3. "I´m the hope of the universe!" - Superman Son Goku

Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

The first is the Ocean dub and the second and third ones are from the original Funimation dub.

Well, technically all those lines were conceived by FUNimation, so pigeonholing everything as one dub isn't incorrect, although i'm sure you already know this.

DRAGON BALL IS THE KING OF (Fighting) ANIME!!!!!!! In my opinion, at least...

My reaction to anything about Dragon Ball post-2013 that I don't like and/or is stupid. :P

In terms of inaccurate dubs that I could actually sit down and enjoy, I'd say the "Ocean" Dub. I actually like quite a few of the actors (like Scott McNeil) and I love how over the top it was sometimes. Lines like "My name's Recoome, it rhymes with doom, and you're gonna be hurtin' all too soon" and "Ah excuse me, has anyone seen my arm? You can't miss it, it's green!" always make me chuckle.

In terms of pure silliness, my favorite is definitely the Speedy Dub, for all the reasons TheBlackPaladin listed.

The Big Green dub for me. It provided me with near constant entertainment, and some truly memorable lines. Like the one I have in my sig. What made it even funnier was that it seemed like the guys who were dubbing the show were taking it somewhat seriously. The Speedy dub is also pretty amusing, but I feel like that one had more sporadic moments of greatness as opposed to the Big Green dub. Plus, it was kinda forgivable since English isn't the native language over there. One thing the Speedy dub does have over the Big Green dub though, is the line about black human beings disliking the sound of rubbing glass. That shit can't be topped.

I'll have to also say Big Green. It's a train-wreck in the most beautiful way.
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.
