Which series had a more natural transition? Super or GT

Post by Bansho64 » Sat Apr 23, 2016 9:57 pm

Which one of the series do you think picked up after Z well? Which do you think had the better transition? I'd have to go with GT because it picks up right after the end of Z and the music and animation go along with the previous series pretty well in my opinion.

Honestly, it would be GT only because of the animation. GT was the same as Z back then and now its all digital and even though I watch other modern series, it really took me a while to get used to Dragon Ball being animated like that in a weekly series.

Super because the color and tone still fit with DBZ. GT had a very different art direction than DBZ which didn't work for me.

Another GT vs Super thread?
Ok let me preface this by saying I'm biased and don't like Super much at all. Primarily due to the plot direction and power level inflation without context.

That being said, handled differently Super would have been a nice continuation of Z if it didn't seem to retconned so much lore or but lore out of nowhere. Some lore is ok but every arc has several tidbits of heh, never mentioned before but this is part of the DB universe and always has been just didn't know about it for X reason. Super spends a lot of time explaining why things are suddenly present in its universe. This creates a narrative that feels more out of sync than if Super has started immediately after Z concluded. The transition to Super is jarring because where in Z being presented with new information didn't require them to list reasons the audience just accepted it. Super is forced to explain why the new lore fits into the established universe.

GT. It literally picked up right after DBZ ended. It felt like a continuation right from the get go. Picking up right after with Oob and Goku. But here come the people who will turn this into a LOLGTSUXS/LOLSUPERSDUMB thread. I'm already seeing it.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

I think I'd have to go with GT on this one. While I'm enjoying the new era of material that kicked off with Battle of Gods, I've never really been 100% on board with the decision to keep forcing stuff into the ten year gap. A little bit of it would have been fine, I guess, but it seems like we might be eternally stuck there, and that's disappointing since I'd really like to see how Toriyama himself would make Oob and Pan work as characters, since all we really have to go on is GT.

But yeah, picking up where the series ended just about has to flow better than 'here's stories that take place a very short while before it ended', just from a narrative point of view.

Definitely GT.
I don't like it, i think it's garbage BUT they had the balls to go past the EoZ and actually be a sequel in its true meaning.

Gt's production quality was closer to Z's so it felt more natural in that regard.

Both of their stories feel like a natural continuation but I'll have to give the edge to Super because it's executing its plots a lot better than Gt ever did.

Gotta go with GT

The transition felt natural despite TOEI/storyboaders decision to turn Goku into a kid was pure asspull

The animation, soul, music. Nothing ever felt "disjointed". The aged cast (Bulma, Veggie, Gohan, Chichi) also gave the show's natural portrayal of characters an edge when compared to muscle-degenerated Z-fighters*cough*Veggie's Final Flash moment*cough

GT feels more natural in terms of production, but it lacks the artistic direction to make it whole with Dragon Ball. Battle of Gods is the best successor, and it could have worked on its own, had Resurrection of F not kickstarted the new series (I don't like RoF). While Super has Akira Toriyama's seal of approval, for now, the characters' progression was the most unnatural, with Gohan being a father and scholar as soon as he resumed his life after the Buu saga. What DB GT had in its favour was the time span, which allowed the characters to age accordingly. Now, what I seriously don't like is how prosaic the world of GT has become, with DB Online providing a better scenario of the series' future. The Universe 6 Tournament could have happened after BoG as well, so I'm favouring the manga that covers these two arcs alone. To sum it up:

Battle of Gods > Super Manga > DB GT > Super Anime > Resurrection of F

As far as successors go.

Super. I'm not a GT hater but Super has done a better job at bringing back that gag manga feel, which Toriyama was clearly trying to do with the Buu saga.

I'd agree with this. GT's colour and tone was very dull at times, even if the animation was good. Also, I've always thought DB felt more dated than DBZ even back in the late 80s and early 90s, so in that regard it feels natural that Super would also be a progression of some sort.

I say GT, Super has that problem of being inbetween chapters and now it just feels a bit squeezed inbetween for the purpose of telling a story. It still somewhat works.

I may be a little bit biased since I prefer old anime over new ones, so GT.

But we all know Super is the true sequel

As much as I like Super more than GT in several areas, I gotta say, GT felt the more natural transition purely because it, well, picked off directly from where Z ended. But, if Super ends up going past EOZ, then I'd say Super feels like the more natural transition because it still has that classic Toriyama charm and sense of adventure that GT sorely lacked.

GT without a doubt.

Super isn't even continuing from where Z left off, it's creating a completely unrelated branch of sidestories wedged in between the Buu arc and EoZ.

This pretty much. A sequel should always take place after the last episode of the prequel.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I hate GT, but it flew with EoZ. Super just crashed in with the Gods all of a sudden. Lots of retcon to make adjustments
Toyotarō: … I get the feeling I’ve just heard something amazing (laughs). Lord Beerus and Whis turn up in Dragon Ball Super, and have become an unsurpassable wall for Goku and the gang. What do the two of them mean to you?

Toriyama: Well… First off, right now I don’t have any plans for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis.

I would argue that GT by default was a more natural transition due to picking up immediately after the manga and Z anime ended, as well as the fact that it actually took place after the tournament with Uub. Super is more of side story, rather than a genuine continuation.

^ bingo. Super has earned the title of side story far more than anything GT did
