Your fondest memories related to DB?

Post by coola » Fri Apr 29, 2016 3:23 pm

For me, i have three:
1. July 2000, i had to go to vacation with my mom and dad for 2 weeks, last episode i saw, was Episode 84, i had palayed Super Goku Den 2 before, so i knew what's gonna happen, during these two weeks, we were in countryside, where TV didn't have RTL7, i was wondering, how battle will end, and looked forward when i will be able to watch video tape, i returned for Episode 102 :)
2. Finding NES emulator, that was able to save sate Famico m DBZ games, earlier, i had to use REW Gameboy emulator, and had to try finish game in one setting, only manager to finish DBZ 2: Freeza RPG
3. Dragon Box release of DBZ in USA, in 2006 i bought DB The Movies, and tried to save money for Dragon Box DBZ, i never imagined Funimation would release DBOX, i was so happy, now, if only they released original Dragon Ball :)

1. Seeing Dragon Ball Z for the first time in Japanese as a 10 year old kid on a bootleg VHS.

2. Finding and reading info on DBZ Movies 1-13 and GT long before they where release in the US.

3. Buying Japanese merchandise of Dragon Ball Z at local Japanese collectors shops as a kid.

4. Seeing DBZ Movies 6-13 and GT in Japanese long before they where release in the US on bootleg VHS tapes or downloading them with dial up.

5. Going on old DBZ web forums and chat rooms in the early-mid 2000's.

6. Going on Daizenshuu EX, My Favorite Games and Dragnet in 2004 for Budokai 3 news.

7. Watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami when I would come home from school.

8. Seeing Dragon Ball for the first time back in 1997 on VHS. My dad give it to me as a gift for my birthday.

9. Downloading emulators to play old school DBZ games back in 2003

10. Printing Dragon Ball AF images on Google back in 2003 and 2004

This is going to be an ironic choice coming from me, but it's Spring 1999 when I first watched the tapes of Ginyu - Assault and Ginyu - Double Cross. Yes, even at 13 I could tell that the voice acting and the music was crap (Schemmel was an improvement over Kelamis), but it had been a long time since the last new DBZ episode and I watched the hell out of those tapes.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Oh boy I have so many, but I'll name the ones I recall the most.

1) Discovering Dragon Ball upon finding literally hundreds of un-opened Dragon Ball figures in my cousins house. I always wanted to play with them, but he wouldn't let me open them. He eventually let me watch his Dragon Boxes. Oddly enough I never noticed his DB manga! I suppose I thought they were just books as a kid.

2) Coming home that exact same day to tell my friends in my neighborhood about an awesome show that was on Toonami. (My cousin wouldn't let me borrow his DBoxes so he told me about Toonami)

3) Watching my cousin draw Dragon Ball and Mortal Kombat all the time, I always wondered why he drew everyday. It took me literally until I was probably 16 to put together that he was inspired to be a Manga artist since DB was his life, and it came from a manga.

4) My father buying me GT Transformation and a GBA SP for my Birthday!

5) Playing Budokai 1 and 2 with my friends and cousins 24/7 on PS2.

6) Anxiously awaiting for my mother to return home with Budokai 3 at a night release, and my father letting me stay home from school the next day to play it. (She also got me a 2nd PS2 memory card!)

7) Buying any magazine with Dragon Ball on it from random general stores, like "How to draw Goku!"

8 ) Staying up late with my friends to watch DBZ on Toonami, I recall Pokemon with a different cast airing after. I think it was called Pokemon chronicles.

9) Literally after an episode of DBZ went off, a friend asked why there weren't any "Fighting Cartoons" like DBZ and Naruto came on right after. Thanks to Toonami and DBZ we were introduced to Naruto.

10) Walking through my neighborhood with friends at night, looking up at the moon pretending to turn into a Giant Ape (Oozaru).

11) Sitting on my steps during the summer playing Buu's Fury for GBA SP awaiting my friends to get home from going shopping with their parents.

12) Arguing with my friends that DBZ was still better than Naurto and Avatar.

13) Finding DBZ figures and toys in places they shouldn't have been, like this clothes only thrift-shop my grandma used to go to.

That's not even a crack into my subconscious but I don't want to bore you with my DBZ based childhood! :)
(DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Naruto, and Pokemon were probably the anime we all liked the most and it's the only connection I have left now with the friends I grew up with. I think that is why DBZ itself is so precious to me.)

Watching the marathons of Dragon Ball Z that Toonami would regularly have and playing damn near the entire library of DBZ games on the PS2 (Budokai 1, Budokai 2, Budokai 3, Tenkaichi 1, Tenkaichi 2, Tenkaichi 3, Burst Limit etc.)

1. Watching the series in Japanese from start to finish for the first time. This was probably the most important moment in my fandom. I'm happy that I got to experience Dragon Ball in its original state.

2. Freaking out over DBS/ROF announcements. Everyone went crazy. Sadly I didn't experience the frenzy of BOG, but BOG is on this list for another reason.

3. BOG turning me into a "hardcore" fan. If it wasn't for this movie, I probably would not be here right now.

4. Watching the muscle tower through General Blue portion of the RRA Arc as a kid. For whatever reason, I vividly remember watching this. The funny thing is that muscle tower is probably my least favorite part of the RRA Arc.

5. Playing DBZ video games. I owned every single PS2 DBZ video game, along with Buu's Fury for the Gameboy and Burst Limit for the Xbox 360. Also GT transformation, but we don't talk about that game.

6. Reading the manga for the first time. That's all that needs to be said.

7. Playing pretend DBZ with my cousins when we were little kids. I remember I made up a blue haired SSJ form that was supposed to be the next step after yellow. Little did I know...

I've got tons. Here's some highlights:

- Halloween 2000 and 2001: Dressing up as Goku!

- December 2000: Climax and ending of the Cell arc on Toonami. That week, my dad worked night shifts, so he wasn't able to watch the show at home when it aired, so I watched by myself and he set up the VCR to record it. The day after the episode aired where the Kamehameha clash between Gohan and Cell, I wake up to my dad wanting to talk about the episode. We both gushed over how monumentally awesome it was for Gohan to fire a Kamehameha with one arm.

- First Wii game purchased (outside of Wii Sports) was Budokai Tenkaichi 3, the day right after Christmas 2007. Still have that game around, still so many fun memories.

- Spending late nights with an old laptop watching Alternate Reality DBZ and DBZ Abridged

- My grandpa leaving the room in disgust after I started up an episode of Kai from the DVR because he doesn't like "stupid cartoons", only for him to have no such issue when my dad did the same thing later.

- (Poorly) attempting to retell the entire story of Dragon Ball (especially DBZ) to my friend while we both worked in his dad's orchard for the summer.

- Taking that same friend to Battle of Gods at the theater

- Hearing, not even 30 seconds after BoG finished, somebody say "You know, his name was supposed to be 'Bills', right?" and dying a little on the inside

- Having to see Resurrection F by myself because I was working away from home (for my college) during the summer and just enjoying the movie with the small group of folks who came in to watch

- Being on this forum!
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.
Don't forget to slow down and enjoy yourself.

1. Seeing the Spirit Bomb and Super Saiyan episodes on Namek for the first time.

2. Watching long marathons of the Saiyan and Frieza sagas on Cartoon Network UK during weekends and school holidays.

3. Going on holiday on the episode were the Cell Games was about to start, coming back to see SS2 Gohan owning Cell and actually mistaking him for Goku at first glance due to his new hairstyle and drastically different facial expression.

4. Getting Budokai 2 for Christmas 03 and playing it religiously for months.

5. Getting internet access in August 2004 and discovering Budokai 3 was in the works and that it would have GT and movie characters. After that I followed the game obsessively right up to its UK release. I remember I actually pre-ordered it, but then cancelled the order due to it not arriving on the predicted release date(which turned out to be the wrong date anyway) and then spent weeks looking for it in-store until finally finding it in Virgin Megastore in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Still my favourite DBZ game too.

6. Being similarly obsessed with each Tenkaichi game and Infinite World leading up to their release each year. I actually really miss getting a new DBZ game each year in the Autumn-Christmas period, as I came to associate that time of year with it.

7. Having Kai finally air in the UK on Boxing day 2012 after not having a DB show air since 2005.

8. Seeing Battle of Gods for the first time.

1. Watching DBGT on Toonnick with my brother. This is what got me into DBZ.

2. My brother showing me his DB games on the Playstation 1 and 2.

3. Watching Dragon Ball Z AMVs on YouTube.

4. Watching Dragon Ball for the first time.

5. Reading the manga for the first time.
Majin Buu: So, hotshot, you want to fight Majin Buu?
Gohan: Fight you? No. I want to kill you.

Gohan: Now I'll show you why my little brother looks up to me.
Majin Buu: He doesn't. In fact, he wonders why you let me absorb him.

Future Gohan: You cannot gain without first suffering the pain of loss.

Gohan: 16, you loved life. You gave everything up to save it. And you were just an Android. I let you die...I can't do that...I won't watch anymore. I...I feel it slipping. And I won't watch this anymore!

Goku: Gohan! You've got to take Cell down now before he can regenerate!
Gohan: Take him down now? No, I think I'll wait. I'm going to let him suffer for a little while.

For me, the one I always remember is when the final climactic battle of the Cell Games aired on Toonami. Usually Toonami would show two episodes a day, the "new" one from yesterday in case you missed it and then today's "new" episode. When they got to the final two episodes of SSJ2 Gohan vs Cell, I recall them airing those back-to-back so we had a full hour of new DBZ. It felt like a movie.

This was how I first experienced Dragon Ball and as a kid, this showdown was beyond exciting.

Edit: Just to be clear, I didn't start at the Cell Games. I was more meaning to say the various English Dubs of the anime were how I started. I was there for Raditz.

I'm gonna go with playing Dragon Ball: Raging Blast on the 360 after being obsessed with Supersonic Warriors. Freaked out over the STARTER characters, and started binge-playing the game.

Related note: I know RB has 70+ characters and RB2 has 100, but it was some while after that when I heard of Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Ended up getting 2, but I'm not disappointed.

My fondest memory of DB was when I was first introduced to the series by a friend back in 2009 who insisted that I watched the whole Goku Vs Freeza fight. I marveled at the very idea that a fight between two characters could last 19 episodes and yet remain entertaining and exciting, but when I realized that this was indeed the case, I also realized that DB was something special that I wanted to see much more of.

Getting introduced to the world and characters through the 1st Tenkaichi game and finally seeing the Saiyan arc which was the 1st time I saw an anime.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Watching it in 2002 as a 7 year old kid. I actually remember just a few things about my life before Dragon Ball, lol.
2013 was revival of my fandom when i watched BoG and loved it!
2015 as a whole, because i reached perfection as a fan - reading the manga, watching all of DB,Z,GT,Kai in original Japanese for the first time as well as all the movies and specials. That forever changed me.

The first time I saw Gohan's SSJ2 transformation with Unmei no Hi. I think it wasn't until then that that moment finally 'clicked' and became one of my favourite parts of the entire story. I remember being emotionally affected by it.
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.
