Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
If Dragon Ball Super never got made and Toriyama continued with writing the Universe 6 story for the Dragon Ball Z movie that would possibly have been released in 2017, do you think it would have worked?
I think it could have made for a good movie. I actually think it could have possibly have had the best of the BoG and the RoF movies by introducing a lot of new characters and opening up the Universe but also having a lot more action and more characters involved.
Of course the better animation would have been great for all the fighting aswell.
On the other hand Tournaments generally don't make for good plots for movies and perhaps it wouldn't have had the same kind of intensity or stakes that the previous movies had.
Perhaps too many fights would have bogged it down and they may not have been able to have as many as 5 on each team but I suppose if they got on with the fighting and had less talking they could have got through them pretty quickly.
So I dunno, I think it would have been good but I don't know if it would have been the best one or not. It would have been intetesting to see though.

Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
Hmmmm....you'd have to drastically change the plot to make it into a movie. One thing that came to mind for me was changing the tournament into a team melee battle.
Stick close with what we've got and probably we'll get even shorter battles, maybe even shorter and faster paced than the manga's depiction to fit the time frame. Would the Tenkaichi Budokai arcs of the original Dragonball have been as fun if a lot was cut out? I think not.

I don't think it would, but following BoG and RoF patterns, the new movie should be announced in june and released in 2017. And maybe it's gonna be Champa arc in movie version, it's scary to think how would all that work out.
Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
Well the arc was 13 episodes which at 20 minutes each makes it 260 minutes in what would need to be no more than a 120 minute movie.
A lot of the fights involved comments from people watching or them just talking. If you took that away there's only several minutes worth of fighting.
They could have cut out Monaca's involvement and perhaps Jaco and Bulma going to see Zuno and things like that. So I don't think it would have been too difficult to fit it all in.

The last two got announced mid July. I doubt it's be a movie version of this arc because it wouldn't make as much money if people knew how it was going to play out.I don't think it would, but following BoG and RoF patterns, the new movie should be announced in june and released in 2017. Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
The arc was short and full of filler like characters just commenting on the fights so it could definitely work.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Better animation would definitly be a plus at least.

Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
The Champa Arc could have definitely worked as a movie. How good of one is up to individual tastes, as always. I personally loved Battle of Gods, but there are plenty of people that didn't for whatever reason: it wasn't actiony enough, Beerus wasn't an actual bad guy, didn't feel like there were any real stakes, etc. Regardless, the Champa Arc content would need some slight restructuring to streamline things, similar to what the manga has done. Mostly in the beginning for setting things up (like not bogging the Zuno stuff down with the Burpman material), using less cutaways during the fights themselves as well as not padding them out.

If anything, it would be rushed just like ROF Movie.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

It would definitely work as a movie.

107:00-112:00: The Zen-Ou appears and admonishes Beers and Champa for neglecting their duties, but says the tournament was a lot of fun to watch, so he wants to hold another tournament between all of the universes. Gokuu and Hit promise to have a conclusive rematch at the next tournament.
113:00+: Credits.
One Piece: Strong World was 113 minutes, so a movie of similar length shouldn't be hard at all.

Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
Too much battle, with little to none plot and I think there hardly wouldn't be room enough for character development, good interactions with one another and goofy moments.
Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
A talented director can make character development work in the middle of fights. It worked well with Cabba and you could go the route of making the Universe 6 fighters subtly acknowledge things about our protagonists ala Batman antagonists on a smaller scale.

I learned english listening to songs. So I don't know anything about. The day you had to learn play piano by just listening .mp3, you'll understand.

Exactly and people still watched that but it's be different because that added a lot because if screentime whereas a Universe 6 movie would just be a condensed version of something they just saw but this time they'd have to pay for it.Oh yeah, July, i forgot. They tried that with One Piece Movie 8 and 9 and them not being successful is what let to Oda doing One Piece Strong World.

Maybe these ones...Bullza wrote:That's true though Karate Kid didn't revolve around a Tournament

...now that I think about, a lotta movies use a tournament to gather characters.
While in fact none of them is really a great movie...

Hell yeah, it could have worked as a movie. Especially considering how short the fights themselves were. I reckon if it were a movie, it would have lasted about two hours.
Spoiler:
Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
It makes me wonder what they would do for a new movie. I love to see the U6 saga as a movie with better animation but I wonder if Toei would do it since most fans would already know the story and plot twists. If they turn the U6 saga into a movie then would they do the same with the Future Trunks saga and the rest of Super? They might have more lower budget movies and release them more frequently like they're doing with Digimon Tri in order to cover all the sagas in Super. They could advertise them as being closer to Toriyama's original draft/script while DBS is Toei's adaptation for TV. The other possibility is for a completely original story but that might be hard to fit into Super's timeline since there's barely a timeskip between sagas. It would have to be something like the original non-canon movies that fans assumed just took place in a different timeline. That wouldn't do as well as something written by Toriyama and advertised as being in the same continuity as the manga though.
Re: Would the Universe 6 saga have worked as a movie?
Chuuquita mentioned the possibility of having a movie where Vegeta goes to Universe 6's Planet Salad and I thought that sounded like a good idea.
You couldn't have any future movies be a retelling of the saga we've already seen because it wouldn't be as successful. A movie where the characters travel to Planet Salad, meet Cabba and see how the other Saiyans live while having a villain who'd originate from that world in what could easily be a self contained story would work best.
It'd actually be like the first Broly Movie. A story where they go to a Saiyanish planet and fight a powerful Saiyan in between the 10 day rest for the Cell Games.
