Dragon Ball Super Staff Roundup

Post by Wezenheim » Thu May 26, 2016 1:13 pm

Hello everyone! Recently I conceived an idea for a little series on YouTube that focuses on the staff members working on Dragon Ball Super. I decided to name this series the Dragon Ball Super Staff Roundup, and I've finally gone through with making the first video, which focuses on Toma Seizo, one of Super's repeat animation supervisors.

I created this thread because I thought it would be nice to share whatever information I can find and promote discussion as well. I really want to make these videos as well as I can, and I think this community is the perfect place to get that feedback. I know I have a lot I need to work on, YouTube and video making in general is something I'm still trying to figure out. I want to thank anyone who decides to give some of these a go and anyone who participates here. I also really want to thank Ajay and JulieYBM, as they've helped me a lot with gathering sources and things of that nature.

A few notes about episode one:
I'm curious to hear feedback on the format. I'm a little unsure how well the setup works, and if it is even necessary to divide things up into sections. I also don't know if music is something I should keep or be rid of. Audio consistency in general is definitely something I need to work on, I think. This video was a fun one! I think Toma was a good candidate to start with. I hope I was able to gather enough worthwhile information to make for an interesting watch, and I hope everyone enjoyed it! I definitely can't wait to do more.

Update (7/31/2016)
Terribly sorry about the wait with this one, but I finally made a second episode. This one focuses on Yashima Yoshitaka, one of the recurring animation supervisors and key animators working on the show. He also storyboards!

To check out his style across his episodes, as well as the styles of the other supervisors, go check out Ajay's Super Animation Catalogue.

So I changed the format for this one. I decided to add a simple little background. I did this in order to help lower res screenshots from looking quite as bad on larger screens, to help fill the void between images and clips, and to help keep aspect ratios and stuff consistent so that there's no black bars. I also decided to stop breaking up the videos into sections, because I feel that wasn't really necessary to begin with. I hope the change helps for the better, let me know if it doesn't!

This is a really neat idea and I look forward to see more videos like this. Really good work, Wezenheim.

Question: How long did it take you to put together the first "episode"?

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

It probably took me longer than it should have, honestly! It has "technically" been in the works since a little after episode 41, which is actually why I decided to start off with Toma. It was a slow process at first, but when I actually buckled down after finishing the script I'd say it took me a little over a week/week and a half. Gathering the stills and such was definitely the most time consuming part, especially for shows that don't have many good quality videos available.

So I updated the main post with my new video about Yashima Yoshitaka. Sorry again for the wait! Any feedback about the video and the new format would be really appreciated. I'm going to start working on the next one soon, so if anyone has any requests for me let me know! Also if I screwed anything up tell me about that as well. I'm going to sleep!

Really enjoyed your round-up videos. They seemed like they had a fair bit of research and effort put into them. Hope you plan on continuing the series.

I am! :P I ran into a little bit of a hold-up with one I'd been working on previously, but I'm going to be working on another until that all gets sorted out. I'm probably going to try to make a video about Tsuji Miyako next.

That should be very interesting since she has had such a large presence on the series. Looking forward to it. :D
