Why didn't Daimao translate Dragon Ball?

It always struck me as odd that Daimao himself didn't translate Dragon Ball. He did translate DragonBall Z & DragonBall GT for the FUNi releases so it would make sense for him to translate Dragon Ball so it can keep the consistency & quality of its counterpart FUNi subs releases. I know most people say that Cylde Mandelin's translations are good but don't keep on par with Daimao quality per say & I ,in general, think that this inconsistent because you got two translators who have their own style or take translating the DragonBall series', so it can can be somewhat confusing that when someone watches "DragonBall Z or GT" with subs, then watches "Dragon Ball" with subs, & find very different wordings (or takes as I've mentioned).

Also, if Daimao can or already has answered this question, why didn't you translate Dragon Ball?

There's only so much one person can sub... considering the massive amount of properties FUNi has gotten in the past few years.

I'm going to guess that he had so much work to do between Dragonball Z, GT, and other Anime at the time that he simply couldn't cram Dragonball in as well.

I guess I didn't think about that. I didn't consider or was aware of the possibility of him doing other projects at the time. Still though, it would of been convienient if the subs were consistent was that of Daimao's.

Clyde Mandelin was a greenhorn in DVD translations in the days he was doing DB, so I wouldn't be too hard on him. He improved vastly by the Fortuneteller Baba saga, IMO, though he tended to drop little hey's and the like that irked me a little bit, but even so, the Uranai Baba and Tenshinhan sagas are Tomato translating Dragon Ball at his best, IMHO.

So, please, don't let his early mistakes discourage you from getting the Dragon Ball discs or anything else he's worked on for FUNI, for that matter.

That really is the whole reason. That year, let's see, I was doing DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Blue Gender, Fruits Basket, the odd Sakura Taisen and Lupin feature, had started on DB, GT was in the pipeline, and FUNimation was negotiating for Kiddy Grade and Tenchi (and probably Spiral and Case Closed, at that point). There was just too much to do if they were going to keep their releases on schedule, and it was only going to get worse, so they asked me to help select another translator, and I put Clyde's resume on the top of the stack.

Whoa, I didn't know you picked him out yourself, Daimao! I always thought it was just some automated decision made by some higher-ups in the company, but to learn that is was actually you that made the choice is indeed a surprise. Going from discussions I've had with Clyde Mandelin about his job, I didn't think you'd have that much of a say in company decisions(Clyde has jokingly commented on how "they don't really listen to me, the lowly translator" )

To hear that you chose Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin really says a lot about him.

Don't worry I'm not discouraged or anything like that. I plan on getting the DVDs soon, which is why I started this topic cause it seemed to strike me as odd. Well thanks for all the input guys.

I believe Daimao translated the Pilaf saga episodes (Madman Australian release), the 21st Budokai arc, and DB movies 2 and 3. So we get to see how he'd have handled it in some areas. I don't mind Clyde personally; he seems like a cool guy that's been giving his all. I must say, he's better than the translators for the Evangelion platinum set.

That was cool of ya', Daimao. For the record, I'm glad you got GT. Your subs, in conjunction with it being 100% uncut, were the saving grace of those DVDs IMO. But yeah, I can see how the near dozens of anime properties FUNi’s licensed by now’d be overwhelming. Props on helping out Clyde.
