Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
I've seen a lot of complaints like Gokuu is a selfish bastard who cares more about training and fighting stronger opponents rather than spending time with his family and YADA YADA YADA. While it is definitely true to an extent but it doesn't mean he doesn't care for his family.
Me personally i think he does. The best example which shows Gokuu's love for his friends and family is the climax of BOG when Beers fires that huge ki blast which Gokuu fails to stop and gives up. What is the first thing that comes into Gokuu's mind while falling? Chi Chi followed by his friends and family and then he snaps. That scene itself is proof that Gokuu does give a shit about his family. There are more instances too but the one i mentioned is perfect.
So,what do you guys think? Does Gokuu care about his family or no?

He obviously cares a whole lot about his family but he sees them more as friends, or best friends, rather than family. That's why he has no problem "abandoning" them, he has no concept of family.
Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
Are we talking about current Goku? Goku in the Saiyan arc? Goku in the movies?
Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
There's no difference between the characterization of his love for his friends and family over all of his different incarnations.Bansho64 wrote:Are we talking about current Goku? Goku in the Saiyan arc? Goku in the movies?

I would say there is. DBZ Movie 3 in particular comes to mind and really feels like an over-selling of the protecting friends/family and specifically the planet.Doctor. wrote:There's no difference between the characterization of his love for his friends and family over all of his different incarnations.

The planet yeah, I wouldn't disagree regarding that. But with his friends/family, I'd say even Toriyama!Goku would act that way.VegettoEX wrote:I would say there is. He loves his family but not in a way that we would expect in our modern, current world with our morals. He loves them like a unsophisticated man who grew up in the wild, who puts fighting above everything else, and doesn't think much about stuff, loves his family.Saikyo no Senshi wrote:I've seen a lot of complaints like Gokuu is a selfish bastard who cares more about training and fighting stronger opponents rather than spending time with his family and YADA YADA YADA. Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
There's a big difference. Each one I listed is different from the other. Especially when it comes to putting his friends and family before his love of battle. The same traits that made him a lovable Saiyan in the Saiyan arc are the same ones that are now making him currently seem like an unlovable douche. He's been playing with his enemys like their freakin' toys. Take the recent Trunks arc for example. He didn't even apologize for letting Black get away because of his own selfishness. It's like he doesn't even care anymore.Doctor. wrote: There's no difference between the characterization of his love for his friends and family over all of his different incarnations.
Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
He seemed to have that concept with Gohan (The one he killed). Or maybe I don't remember their relationship well enough. He seemed to essentially be his father figure, and they had a lovely reunion which I think transcends just friends. Goku as an adult seems to basically be what you just said.Doctor. wrote:He obviously cares a whole lot about his family but he sees them more as friends, or best friends, rather than family. Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Oh Goku loves his family, without a doubt. He's just very selfish and puts his own desires (Eg training) ahead of their safety, but when they are in danger he will protect them.

Of course he does. He's a very selfish person, and Goku will the first person to tell you that, but deep down he really does value the relationship he has with his Chi Chi, Gohan and Goten and loves and cares for them greatly.

Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
It annoys me when people go around saying, he doesn't give a shit about his friends and family.
He obviously does, and there's enough evidence within the series to prove that.
He's selfish when it comes to fighting, yeah but when he isn't? He spends time with everyone. Cell games filler? (Just filler but that's besides the point.)
When Frieza is drowning him, he immediately thinks of his family and friends. Throughout the movies, he shows signs of love. GT points it out clearly when Goku says "You should never mess with a mans family."
So, yeah. I believe Goku has his family and friends deep inside his heart. It was Krillins death that triggered his transformation and he gives tips to Gohan about transforming by using the phrase " Use the pain of loss" If that doesn't show them signals of love, then I don't know.

He would sell his wife for a plate of takoyaki.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I got a question. No one finds it depressing that Chi Chi is possibly married to a man who doesn't love her in a romantic way. He's a nice guy and all, but I don't think Goku is capable of love. He can love you, but not be IN LOVE with you. It seems like he thinks of her as a platonic friend/room mate. If this is true, would you find it depressing?
I would hate to be in a marriage where the wife doesn't love me in that kind of way. Imagine being friend zoned by YOUR WIFE.

Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
While that's one way to look at it, Chi Chi doesn't seem to be overly concerned about their own personal time together more than she does her children's progress, as per her stereotype. With that in mind, they always seem to enjoy each other's company in their downtime anyway. Using a particular instance, I've re-read Volume 33 of Dragon Ball recently and Chi Chi and Goku are being a normal family with Gohan. So, tad exaggeration over there being no love involved.
Re: Does Gokuu give a shit about his family ?
Anyone who'd lay a hand on them or his friends would get ripped apart so he definitely cared but I don't think he knows how to show it right because he didn't grow up in a family so he doesn't have a concept of it, everyone to him are friends except maybe his grandpa Gohan.
That's considering 80's & 90's Goku, current Goku doesn't care about anyone which was made very clear when Piccolo was killed in RF and with how he reacted to Future Bulma getting killed by Black.

No he doesn't give them poo. Lol I'm sorry, my technically and OCD just comes in.
Well obviously he cares about his family well to put it in words, it's probably on a more calm level. He's probably not immersed in the whole spiritual side of connections (i.e bloodline and marriage). I'll use myself as an example: I'm an extremely calm person, it's not I don't care about people but it's more that I'm introvert which can interpreted that I'm a bit self centred and see things objectively.

Maybe I'll have to watch but he felt more mature/fatherly in Z. Especially in the Cell/Buu arc.
In Super he's like a child. He feels completely different now. Only cares about fighting and getting stronger.

Does she love him? She seems more like she's in love with the idea of being in love or the idea of being a wife.DBZfan2015 wrote:I got a question. The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.
