I love Brain Drummond and the Ocean dub, but man, they make Vegeta act like an evil super villain, especially with his cackling.

Did Vegeta want to use the Dragon balls to conquer the universe?
In the Ocean Dub of DBZ, Brian Drummond's Vegeta wanted to use the dragon balls to become invincible so he can kill Frieza and rule the universe himself. Was this his actual motive in the japanese version, or was Ocean Dub making him come off as a saturday morning villain (just like how they would make Goku act like a generic super hero). In the japanese dub, did he only want to kill Frieza? I don't trust the english dubs since they have a habit of changing things around.

Originally, Vegeta and Nappa wanted to make a wish to ensure that they could fight forever, essentially an immortal fighting prime. As time progressed, this evolved into wanting immortality for the purpose of continuously exploiting near-death power-ups to defeat Freeza. I suppose you could make the argument he wanted to rule the universe, maybe, but I think just sticking it to Freeza after so many years of putting up with him was the more striking motive. It's not too far from the truth that he was evil for the enjoyment of being evil. Vegeta, in particular, seemed to relish the idea of asserting his superiority over others through his own power.

If you go by the late Frieza saga filler on earth then yes.

They did that in Japanese too. "My heart is pure, pure evil!" I'm guessing that sounds cool in Japanese, but in English, he sounds like part of the Japanese branch of the Legion of Doom.DBZfan2015 wrote:

Vegeta's lust for power has taken different forms over the years and I do think at one point he wanted to usurp Freeza's position. After seeing Super Saiyan, that lost it's appeal and he just wanted to be stronger than Goku.

Pretty much he needed the Dragon balls to make him immortal to actually have a chance to take on Frezza, but I still don't think it would've made a difference the difference in the power was humongous.
