Why did Gowasu let Zamasu fight Goku?
Why did Gowasu let Zamasu fight Goku?
He said that it was for Zamasu to gain a better understanding of mortals and come to appreciate them. But... wouldn't fighting a battle-hungry mortal just prove to Zamasu that they're all violence-seeking barbarians?

Maybe Gowasu saw or could tell Goku was pure of heart and thought that would sway his opinion?

I'm pretty sure Gowasu meant that in a "they're so beneath us in power" sort of way. His plan sort of backfired.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

IIRC, Gowasu thoughts were also about seeing how Zamasu may control himself...
Also, in Shonen universes, you can "know" someone by fighting him.... so the "know humans more" reason had a sense too. Fighting is not a bad thing in general, because Zamasu does it as a Kaio, and -for some reason- this allowed him to go training as Kaioshin. Goku does not fight for evil, in theory he should not have messed up Zamasu. But Gowasu did not know Goku was so strong Zamasu may even "fear" mortals now.
