I've been watching the Dragon Ball series a lot lately. And one thing I like most about the series is the Tournaments.
The 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai is my personal favorite. It had some truly memorable fights between the main characters of the series. And I thought Tien was a great villain. The fight between him and Yamucha was awesome. I liked how the match was mostly open hand fighting. The same goes for all the other matches. The Jackie vs Tien and Kuririn vs Goku matches were excellent. Especially the Kuririn vs Goku match, which I think is one of the best fights in the Dragon Ball series. Plus, the shown rivalry between the Turtle Hermit and Crane Hermit was hilarious at times. Some of the stuff they did/said to each other had me rolling

. Yes, this particular Tournament was the most enjoyable for me. I like how it ended on a positive note as well.
Which Tournament did you guys enjoy the most?

The 21st Budokai, which is the first one we ever see in Dragonball. We get to learn about it and see what it's like alongside Goku and Kuririn. I just really enjoyed that aspect of it. Seeing it all unfold for the first time. The preliminaries, the different rounds, the interesting competitors. I also loved the anticipation and excitment leading up to it watching Goku and Kuririn train hard for the event.

23rd Budokai is the best, especially Goku vs Piccolo.

I go for the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budokai. I feel that it balanced out all the positive elements of all the Tournaments perfectly in such a way that truly captures the essence of DragonBall.

Personally, I liked all the Tenkaichi Budokais (except for the 24th-6ish era) equally for the reasons mentioned above. However, if you were to tell me which fight I enjoyed the most out of all the Tenkaichi Budokais it would be Son Goku vs. Piccolo Jr. & Son Goku vs. Tenshinhan (both times), just seeing those guys go at it are really something since the fights tend to be so close & cooly drawn out by Toriyama-sensei. I think it's some of his best stuff, even later on in the DB series nothing can seem to top off his earlier fights as I find them visually satisfying & I prefer his earlier style as well. Though his current style is pretty good too.

I gotta go with the 22nd Tournament. It had the perfect balance of DB humor with DBZ action. Any other fights after this one were more focused on the action going on. Also, as previously mentioned, this one actually had a story, with the whole Crane Hermit versus Turtle Hermit and having their trainees fighting to settle their feud just to have Tenshinhan be swayed to the side of good after Jackie Chun forfeits to him.
Ah... I've gotta buy those episodes now...
Ah yeah one more thing that just makes this Saga in general the most enjoyable in anime form: practically NO FILLER (at least not that I can remember). And if there was, then it wasn't that noticable and was most likely something like Roshi showing his perverted side

The 22nd Budokai had filler making it take place over several days instead of 1. There was an attempted hit on Goku by the Crane Hermit and that kickboxer's manager trying to delay Goku from fighting his man.

I don't quite recall which Tenkaichi Budoukai Tournament, but it might've been #21, the first one we ever saw in DragonBall.
The reason I feel this is the best is because of the humor that went along with it. Not to mention we actually got to learn what the whole Tenkaichi Budoukai Tournament was all about. One thing I absolutely loved seeing was the rain/bar scene which delayed the Tournament. We got some of what we later would find out to be known as DragonBall Z in with it as well. Couldn't ask for anything more then the DragonBall humor and the DragonBall Z action combined.

While the 23rd's my favorite, I love how the 21st one played out with such humor.
On hiatus.

Well, I'm sure it's not as bad as the Marron filler

The 23rd Tenkaichi budoukai was without a shadow of a doubt my favourite.
I think that would have to be due to the fact that we get to a tournament, not only to see some competition, but to know as well the fate of the Earth (Cell Games anyone?!).
It had a lot of tension going on, and it introduced us to Piccolo, which is in my view a fantastic character.
I also loved the end of the fight, as well as the fact that Gokou gave Piccolo a senzu, so he could battle him again one day in the future.
Pure Dragonball!

The 21st Tenkaichi Budokai.
That one was classic.
I mean seriously, who doesn't enjoy the Ran Fuan fight?

I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

I love every one of them but if I absolutely HAD to choose I would pick the 23rd because every single fight had an agenda and Gokuh vs. Piccolo is probably one of my favorite fights, ever. Everybody pretty much exploded in power after their three years of training and it was a very climactic build up. Though I have to say in terms of fighting techniques and the closeness of the battles the 22nd may have been better, scratch that, it was.

The 21st gets my vote because of the Jackie Chun / Kuririn fight. When they act out slow motion for the crowd what took place in the split second of their fighting... Hahahahaha... Yeah. Good fun. Actually, any fight with Kuririn in it is a great one. Bacterian, Chaotzu, Piccolo in movie 9. Haha, he is so awesome at life, in my opinion.

Aw man, I completely forgot that one! I remember them doing the re-enactment and Kuririn blowing boogers (how?) at Jackie and Kuririn asking Mr. Announcer to flip him around

. I also agree that any Kuririn fight is a good one... in the tournaments, at least. Who doesn't love Kuririn talking in his younger voice?
Great... you've persuaded me into buying that Saga, too!

I've always been down with the 23rd. Maybe because it was the first one I saw (go Nippon Golden Network!), but maaaaan... some of those fights are pretty hardcore. I love all the new moves that are displayed, because it's a good mix of previous hand-to-hand-style, but also slightly moving into more ki-based (more-so than the 22nd).
Goku vs Piccolo is just crazy.

All three of the Dragonball Tournaments were absolutely amazing to me. Which makes it hard for me to decide which one was the best.
Like the 21st, which is the first time we got to see a tournament and Jackie Chun fighting and everything, especialy the Goku vs. Jackie Chun fight was one to remember. It was also pretty funny seeing Jackie Chun trying to make sure Goku and the others don't find out that he's really Master Roshi.
22nd was good as well because there was more rivalry going on here with Crane and his students entering the compitition and we got to see what Goku learned out of the three years he had to train by himself without Roshi. Plus the Tien vs. Goku fight was amazing, and with how it all ended.
The 23rd had me excited because Piccolo Jr. was going to be here, the spawn of the demon King Piccolo who was an awesome villain. I also loved how we got to see Goku and Chi Chi actually grown up a little more being more tall and all for the first time. And seeing Tao Pai Pai (One of the best villains in Dragonball) back again with Cybernetic enhancements to his body, which was another cool thing here. And then there's the awesome fight between Goku vs. Piccolo. Jr.
There are a lot of other points I could add, but I was just listing a few things about each Tournament had that made them so awesome.
So if I had to choose one as my favorite, then it would probably be the 23rd Tournament.
Again though, all three of the Tournaments in Dragonball were amazing.

Wow. Those are some great replies guys!
I just finished watching the 22nd Tournament today. Afterwards, I was thinking.....Can you imagine how things would've turned out if Tien decided to stay on the "path of darkness" with the Crane Master? He would've been a real nuisance to say the least. But good old Muten Roshi talked some sense into him.
By the way, what do you guys think happened to the Crane Hermit after that? You don't hear from him ever again in the series. I can't remember at this time, but does he make an appearance in the 23rd Tournament when cyborg Tao Pai Pai comes back?

Yes he does. After Tien knocks out Tao Pie Pie, he tells them both to leave and never show themselves again. The Crane Hermit flies off with his brother calling Tien an ingrate and declaring that his death will be painful.
