Dragon Ball Xenoverse Tales from the Time Patrol fanfic thread

Hi all,

I've been following Dragon Ball in its various incarnations for years and only recently discovered Ignore. I thought I'd take the time to post here the fan fiction stories and art that I've been doing over the last six or seven months. As they are quite lengthy, I won't be posting them directly here rather I will provide links to them over at my DeviantArt account where I am most active. As I release new material I will update this thread.

My stories are based off the game Dragon Ball Xenoverse however, they don't tell the story of the protagonist from the game rather they tell the stories of other time patrollers. The tales were inspired in part by the old Star Wars "Tales from the ..." series of books which told the stories of the many background characters seen in the movies. As such they follow the adventures of my own original characters who are members of the time patrol.

I currently have plans for the first arc of the series to be composed of 8 main stories with 2 to 4 bonus side stories. Thus far I have written and posted 6, with the 7th to come out next month, and release new chapters roughly once a month.

I welcome any constructive comments and criticisms of my work and they can be posted here or on my DeviantArt.

The tone for this story is a bit darker than those that came before but I think its a welcome change, especially now that I'm at the pointy end of the series with only one more tale left. Before I release that however I will be releasing a few "bonus" stories which will help flesh out the characters and the broader arc a bit more.

Unlike the other stories in the series this one is a "bonus" story which doesn't really move the storyline along, but I think it does add a bit more depth to the characters and is an interesting diversion.

Also it has Vegeta and Bulma so what's not to love! I tried really hard to portray them both as accurately as possible and I think I pulled it off, its hard writing such well know characters.

Like the last one this story is another bonus tale, with the special guest character this time round Android 18!

Concerning future stories, the next two will be bonus tales after which I will move back to the main story line. The next main story will also be the final tale of the arc and its going to be longer than any of the other stories thus far, as such it'll take me longer than usual to get it done and dusted.

Interesting. I assume you are using your created character as the man character, yes?

That's right, all three of the protagonists are based off of my created characters from Xenoverse 1.

I tend to find that whenever I play a game where you create your own character I come up with stories for them, it makes them more compelling to play.

Your story is well written and easy to read. It's just that everything else isn't to good.

Sert is a boring, generic, generically designed, uninteresting, and unmemorable villain. You never, ever once fleshed him, or his personality out.

Cilin is prehaps even worst than Sert, as he literally has no personality to speak of, besides evil.

Parse is a generically good saiyan for no reason, she's admitted that she's done genocide, so I fully expected her to be cynical, depressed, or anything really. But instead I found out she's a sociopath, whose civilisation erasing years haven't affected her in the slightest. Except once for super saiyan, which was prehaps the second worst transformation sequence in the entire franchise. It wasn't even important enough to get it's own transformation sequence, only a passing mention. Super saiyan 2 was even worse as she only acheived the fucking form in 4 months of training.

Beet is almost as bad as Parse, it's been stated multiple times that the earthling's are one of the weakest races but for some reason, that's not been explained Beet is capable of keeping up with Parse due to kaio ken times 100. He's not pragmatic, you could literally call him a Saiyan, and I would agree.

Fair criticisms all, though I have my reasons for doing things the way I did.

As far as my villains were concerned I never intended for them to stick around long so never felt the need to develop them. I wanted them to be more akin to the likes of androids 19 and 20, traditional disposable bad guys so to speak similar to the kind you'd see in most western Saturday afternoon cartoons. However, Sert did end up sticking around longer than I had originally intended so I probably could have made some greater effort with him. The second arc will have a single villain that I intend to be fully fleshed out.

With regard to Parse showing no apparent regret or trauma over her past, I decided not to pursue that line as I felt it would mire the story down and I wanted to move things along fairly quickly. It seemed fair to me given that in the series Goku could go from "I'll never forgive you" after Freeza killed Krillin to "Ok, you're forgiven, go in peace" in the space of a few episodes, not to mention Vegeta becoming a good guy but never showing any remorse for his past actions.

On the topic of Beet's uncanny (for an earthling) strength, I actually have reasons for that but they won't be explored in this first arc.

This first arc was always just meant to give a kind of snapshot of a handful of action filled days in the lives of a few patrollers, hence the large gaps of time between the stories, as such I'm aware that it feels kind of fast in terms of pacing and character development.

Fair points, it's just that the idea that you want to create boring villains with the similar vein of Android 19, and 20, is just baffling.

Also Beet has some saiyan in him. It's incredibly easy to spot that's the reason why he's so strong. Also the difference between Parse, and Goku is that Goku is the most selfish thing in the universe. Also Vegeta got the shit kicked out of him, and humiliated so that balanced out his shitty attitude and past.

Personally, I've never really thought of Goku as being selfish more of an idiot savant, when he got dropped on his head as a baby his brain rewired so he's good at fighting but severely impaired at pretty much everything else (including socially).

I know interesting villains are hard to build up. But you need one as they propel the narrative up a bit, and make the story much more worthwhile to read.

Yes, but Parse isn't an idiot savant, she's just an ordinary saiyan, who turned out good, and killed off a few species. The fact that something from that didn't change her all at the slightest is just baffling. You could have actually used those wiping out civilization moments to make her have more barbaric, cynical, a complete disregard for life, so that she could go through meaningful character development.

In fact even her going super saiyan was annoying, she didn't earn it, and yes Goten and Trunks didn't earn it, but everyone hates them. It felt rushed and tacky when she transformed in what the second chapter? And super saiyan 2 in the next felt unneeded.

Also it was a missed opportunity with someone like Parse, you could have had him as the happy, go lucky, pragmatic human/saiyan who never gives up, and make it contrast to Parse's more darker personality. And slowly he would have changed her to be a better person. And their relation ship would have felt more meaningful
