Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super EP. 66 Below:
What if Goku and Vegeta defused on purpose as a means to let Trunks be the one to save the future? After all, Vegeta did lampshade this when Trunks figured SSJ Blue would be able to stop Black, understandably not wanting his son to slack on his fated duty.
It would also be a callback to Goku not killing Majin Boo as SSJ3 and wanting Goten and Trunks to save the world.

Goku was confident the boys could beat Majin Buu with fusion. I don't think anybody, both in-universe and in the real world, anticipated Trunks pulling all this crazy hax out of his ass.

I love how even Trunks seemed surprised. I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.
