Goku's Sacrifice in Kai (Japanese superior to Funimation)

Post by mecha3000 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 4:20 am

Okay, I actually like the English dub of Kai (I don't know if others share the same opinion). But there's one moment that really bugs me. When Goku is saying goodbye to Gohan in the original Japanese version of Kai - He tells Gohan to tell Chichi that he's sorry he's been so selfish and given her such hard times (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL9Hv8WpPyo). However, in the Funimation version of Kai - He tells Gohan to keep hitting the books and to tell Chichi he's sorry he won't make it home this time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcD1ScKgqUk).

Uh yeah, this change bugs me a little. I know it's not that big a deal, but I've come to learn that Goku is not the character I thought he was when I was a kid. He's selfish and does many things based on if it benefits him fighting tough opponents. Even at the end of Z, he leaves his family/friends just to train some kid he wants to fight. So what I'm saying is: THE ONE MOMENT HE ACTUALLY APOLOGIZES FOR THIS IS TAKEN OUT OF THE ENGLISH DUB? Seriously?

Don't get me wrong. I love Funimation and how they've done things since Kai. A lot of the time, I actually prefer their slight deviations from the original Japanese script. But I prefer the original "Tell your mom I realize how selfish I am and that it hurts her and I recognize this flaw of mine and I'm sorry" over "Yeah, slugger - You keep hitting those books. I'm always there for you, but this one time - I'm not going to be able to be there for you. But just this one time though. So yeah, tell your mom my bad about that"

Okay, the Funimation version wasn't exactly said like that - But you get the point. I just don't understand why Funimation insists on occasionally STILL making Goku a seemingly perfect character. I guess to make him more likeable and heroic? Still, moments like these make me understand why some fans prefer the original version. I just hope Funimation's Kai Buu Saga makes up for this by letting Goku say to Gohan something along the lines of, "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you, son" instead of his original "Go show him what a Saiyan's made of" speech. I've heard from this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icTqUqhHKQY) that Sean Schemmel plans to make it really emotional. And honestly, if it works - It would make up for the sacrifice scene in my opinion even though many fans might hate it.

Cell Kai was dubbed loosely in some areas, this being an example.
